tawk.to vs Aftersales: what is the short answer?
Pick tawk.to if you want free live chat, ticketing and a knowledge base for an unlimited number of agents, and you mostly need an AI that answers questions from your content. Pick Aftersales if you need AI that resolves conversations end to end by taking actions such as Stripe refunds and Shopify replacements under spend limits, plus quality monitoring and enterprise security.
| Aftersales | tawk.to | |
|---|---|---|
| Core price | Free for 1 seat; paid seats $24 to $109/month billed annually | Free, with unlimited agents |
| AI price | $0.99 per resolution, free when Agent can't help | AI Assist: free Hobby tier, then $29, $99 or $399/month for 1,000 to 20,000 message credits |
| What AI is billed on | Resolved conversations, counted once each | Every message the AI sends (1 credit each) |
| Security documentation | GDPR DPA, US-hosted; SSO/SCIM on Scale; BAA on the Enterprise plan | GDPR and EU-U.S. Data Privacy Framework listed; ask about SOC 2, HIPAA, SSO |
| Better for | Teams that want AI to finish order, refund and account requests | Small teams that want free chat for many agents and FAQ-style AI |

Is tawk.to still free, and who owns it in 2026?
Yes. tawk.to is still an independent company and its core product is still free: live chat, an omnichannel inbox, ticketing, a knowledge base, chat pages and a CRM with pipelines, with no per-seat fees. It launched in October 2013, according to its founder's Why is tawk.to free? page, and we found no acquisition, rename or shutdown when we checked in October 2026.
What has changed is how it makes money. Its add-ons page lists four paid extras:
- AI Assist from $29/month, with a forever-free tier for limited volume.
- Whitelabel at $29/month per property, which removes the "Powered by tawk.to" badge and adds custom domains and branded ticket emails.
- Voice Agents from $49/month plus usage (waitlist at the time of checking).
- Data Enrichment from $59/month (waitlist).
The founder's page also still describes hired human chat agents at $1 an hour. Its Q1 2026 update added Telegram to the inbox, Zapier and viaSocket automation, and improved Shopify and BigCommerce order tracking inside AI Assist, and claims over 12 million active businesses.
Why do teams look for a tawk.to alternative?
Teams rarely leave tawk.to over price. They leave when support grows from answering chats into running a service operation, and they want the AI to complete requests rather than answer questions about them.
- AI that answers versus AI that acts. AI Assist is trained on your FAQs, help center, website and documents, and can call APIs (the Growth plan includes 1,000 API calls a month). Teams that want refunds, replacements and account changes handled with explicit permissions and spend limits often look for a tool built around that.
- Per-message AI billing. Every message AI Assist sends uses one credit, per tawk.to's AI Assist billing article. A conversation with five AI replies uses five credits, so long troubleshooting threads cost more than short ones. Extra credits are $30 per 1,000.
- Quality and reporting. Growing teams want every conversation scored, not a sample, and want to see an emerging issue (a broken checkout, a carrier delay) before the queue fills. See Insights.
- Security reviews. tawk.to's security page lists GDPR compliance, the EU-U.S. Data Privacy Framework and encryption in transit and at rest. It does not list SOC 2, a HIPAA BAA or SSO, which procurement teams often require. Ask tawk.to directly if you need them.
- Branding. Removing the badge is $29 per property per month, which adds up for teams running several sites.
None of this makes tawk.to a weak product. It is a generous free tool. Compare more options in the best live chat software.
What should you look for in a tawk.to alternative?
Look at five things: what the AI can do on its own, how the AI is billed, whether there are guardrails you trust, whether one inbox holds every channel, and what your security team needs.
- Actions with permissions. Can the AI verify an order, issue a replacement or refund a payment, and can you revoke each permission? Aftersales Agent maps each step of a procedure to a connector with explicit, revocable permissions.
- Billing tied to outcomes. Per-message, per-conversation and per-resolution pricing behave very differently once threads get long. Work out your average AI replies per conversation before comparing.
- Guardrails. Spend and value limits, escalation on sentiment, keywords, customer tier or legal language, banned phrases and brand voice.
- One queue. Email, chat, WhatsApp, SMS, phone and social DMs in one shared inbox, with SLAs and views.
- Security paperwork. SOC 2 Type II report, DPA, SSO and SCIM, data residency and a BAA if you handle health data. See Aftersales security.
How does Aftersales compare to tawk.to feature by feature?

When is tawk.to the better choice?
tawk.to is the better choice for many small businesses, and we would recommend it in these cases:
- You need many agents on a tiny budget. tawk.to has no per-seat fees. Ten part-time agents cost nothing, where Aftersales charges for each full seat beyond the Free plan.
- Your AI needs are FAQ-shaped. If most questions are about hours, shipping zones or pricing, AI Assist Growth at $29/month for 1,000 message credits is very cheap.
- You want humans without hiring. tawk.to offers hired chat agents (described at $1 an hour on its founder's page) and virtual assistants. Aftersales does not staff your queue.
- You also want a light CRM. tawk.to bundles contacts, a sales pipeline and lead-capture forms for free.
- You run many small sites. Multiple properties under one login, with free chat on each, suits agencies and portfolio owners.
If none of your conversations need the AI to change an order, issue money or touch account data, tawk.to may be all you need.
What does Aftersales cost compared to tawk.to?
At list prices tawk.to is far cheaper. The question is what the extra spend buys. Here is one example with stated assumptions.
Example assumptions: an online store with 4 support agents, 2,000 conversations a month, AI involved in all of them, averaging 2.5 AI messages per conversation, and AI fully resolving 50% (1,000 conversations). Annual billing, no add-ons beyond what is listed.
| Line item | Aftersales | tawk.to |
|---|---|---|
| Platform and seats | 4 Growth seats x $69 = $276 | $0 |
| AI | 1,000 resolutions x $0.99 = $990 | 5,000 credits needed: Business $99 (about $82.50 annually) |
| Branding removal | Included | $29 |
| Monthly total | $1,266 | About $128 |

So tawk.to costs roughly $1,138 less a month in this example. Aftersales is worth that only if its Agent finishes work that would otherwise fall to people: refunds through Stripe within your limits, Shopify replacements, account changes, with the handoff carrying everything already tried. If half of those 1,000 conversations would otherwise need about 6 minutes of agent time each, that is about 50 agent hours a month. Compare your own numbers using Aftersales pricing and our resolution rate guide.
For a one-person store, the gap narrows: Aftersales Free gives 1 seat, live chat, an email inbox and the first 50 Agent resolutions at $0, and tawk.to's Hobby AI tier gives 100 message credits a month free.

How do you switch from tawk.to to Aftersales?
Most teams switch in under two weeks. Run both tools in parallel for a few days so no conversation is lost.
- Export what you need. Pull contacts, knowledge base articles and recent ticket history out of tawk.to (its REST API and webhooks help here).
- Import knowledge. Load your articles and shortcuts into Aftersales Knowledge, so Agent, your team and the help center use one source.
- Connect your systems. Connect Shopify, Stripe or Salesforce if you use them; connect anything else through the Aftersales API or webhooks. Confirm specific connectors on a call.
- Write procedures. Describe your top three requests in plain language, for example "where is my order" or "refund a damaged item under $50". Set spend limits and escalation rules.
- Connect channels. Move email forwarding, WhatsApp, SMS and social accounts into the Inbox.
- Swap the widget. Replace the tawk.to script with the Aftersales chat snippet, starting on one page or one site.
- Review for two weeks. Read Agent's resolved and escalated conversations daily, fix gaps, then remove tawk.to.
Most teams finish migration in an afternoon, and on Growth and Scale we run the migration with you. Comparing more tools first? See all helpdesk alternatives or the Tidio alternative page.
