Chatbase vs Aftersales: what is the short answer?
Chatbase is an AI agent builder you put in front of your support. Aftersales is a full support platform where the AI agent and your human team share one inbox. If you mainly want an AI that answers questions on your website for a predictable monthly fee, Chatbase is often the cheaper choice. If you want AI that resolves conversations and a helpdesk, phone, quality monitoring and reporting built around it, Aftersales is the closer fit.
Both are active, independent products. As of October 2026, Chatbase still operates under its own name at chatbase.co, and its site describes it as "The leading AI agent for CX" and says it is trusted by over 10,000 brands. We found no announcement of an acquisition, rename or shutdown on its site.
- How you pay for AI: Chatbase sells monthly message credits, and every AI reply uses credits whether or not it solves the problem. Aftersales charges $0.99 per resolved conversation and nothing when Agent can't help.
- Where humans work: Chatbase added a helpdesk on its Standard plan and up. Aftersales is built around a shared Inbox with SLAs, workflows, phone transfers and Slack side conversations.
- What you measure: Aftersales Insights scores every conversation with quality Monitors and reports cost per conversation across AI and people.
Why do teams look for a Chatbase alternative?
Most teams start on Chatbase because it is quick: upload your docs or website, embed the widget, and an AI agent is answering in an afternoon. They look elsewhere when support grows past the widget.
- Credits are tied to replies, not outcomes. Chatbase's pricing FAQ says each request to the AI model costs credits based on the model, and that an action can trigger extra requests, so one answer can cost two or more times the base rate (Chatbase pricing). A long or repetitive conversation costs more even when it ends unresolved.
- Bills move with model choice. Chatbase's FAQ lists models from 1 to 6 credits per response. Switching to a stronger model can multiply your credit use for the same traffic.
- Running out has a hard edge. Subscription credits renew on the 1st of each month and do not carry over. Chatbase's FAQ says that when credits run out, the agent shows a message that it is unavailable, unless you set up auto-recharge credits.
- Seat counts are fixed by plan. Hobby includes 2 members, Standard 3 and Pro 5. Larger human teams tend to need Enterprise.
- The human side is newer. Chatbase began as a chatbot builder and has added helpdesk, voice and telephony on Standard and up. Teams whose people handle a large share of conversations often want a helpdesk that was the core of the product from day one.
None of this makes Chatbase a weak tool. It is a strong AI agent builder. The question is whether you need a builder or a support platform.
What should you look for in a Chatbase alternative?
Look for pricing tied to outcomes, AI that can act inside your systems with limits you control, and a place for people to pick up what the AI can't finish.
- Outcome-based AI pricing. Aftersales Agent costs $0.99 per resolution, counted once per conversation however many questions it contained. Conversations it can't help with are free.
- Actions with guardrails. Teams describe a procedure in plain language, or import a macro, and Agent turns it into steps. Each step maps to a connector with explicit, revocable permissions, plus spend limits and escalation rules for sentiment, keywords, customer tier or legal language.
- A clean handoff. Agent passes the conversation to a person with the data it looked up and what it already tried attached.
- One queue for every channel. Email, web and in-app chat, WhatsApp, SMS, phone, social DMs and Slack Connect in the Inbox.
- Help for human reps. Copilot drafts replies that cite their sources, summarizes threads and translates in 31 languages. Teams using it on every conversation see a 2.4× faster median reply (Aftersales' own figure).
- Quality on every conversation. Monitors in Insights review AI and human conversations, not a sample.

When is Chatbase still the better choice?
Chatbase is the better pick when you want an AI agent fast, on a fixed monthly budget, and your human team is small or already has a helpdesk.
- Lowest AI cost at volume. Credits are cheap per reply on efficient models. If your bot answers lots of simple questions, Chatbase usually costs less than paying per resolution.
- Speed of setup. Training an agent on your site and documents and embedding it on WordPress, Webflow, Wix, Framer or Bubble takes very little work.
- Sales and commerce in chat. Chatbase's Shopify actions include product search, cart management and placing orders, and its docs list Calendly and Cal.com booking. Aftersales Agent is built for support actions, not shopping.
- Model choice. Chatbase lets you pick from many models across several providers per agent.
- Native apps and many sites. It ships iOS and Android SDKs and sells extra agents at $25 per agent a month.
- Your helpdesk is staying put. If you are happy with your current helpdesk and only want an AI layer that escalates into it, Chatbase connects to a long list of them.
One caution for regulated teams: Chatbase's HIPAA documentation says BAAs are Enterprise only and that the Chatbase Helpdesk is currently disabled on HIPAA workspaces. Check that against how your people need to work.
What does Aftersales cost compared with Chatbase?
At list prices, Chatbase is usually cheaper if you only count the AI. Aftersales costs more per conversation the AI handles, but you pay only for conversations it resolves, and the helpdesk, phone and quality tools are part of the same bill. Here is a worked example. Your numbers will differ.
Assumptions: a 3-person support team, 2,000 conversations a month, the AI resolves 60% of them, monthly billing on Chatbase and annual billing on Aftersales.
Aftersales (Growth, billed annually)
- 3 seats × $69 = $207 a month
- 1,200 resolutions × $0.99 = $1,188 a month
- 800 conversations Agent could not resolve: $0
- Total: about $1,395 a month
Chatbase (Standard or Pro, billed monthly)
- Assume 3 AI replies per conversation plus one extra model request on a quarter of conversations for an action: about 6,500 requests.
- On a 1-credit model that is about 6,500 credits: Standard at $150 (4,000 credits) plus 2,500 auto-recharge credits at $40 per 1,000 = about $250 a month.
- On a 2-credit model it is about 13,000 credits: Pro at $500 (15,000 credits) = $500 a month.
So why pay more? Count what sits around the AI. On Chatbase, every unresolved conversation still used credits and still lands on a person. On Aftersales those cost nothing in AI fees, and they arrive in an Inbox with the context Agent gathered. The comparison that matters is cost per resolved conversation and how much human time remains. Aftersales customers see a median 71% of conversations resolved by Agent after 90 days, and Northwind Outdoors cut cost per conversation by 41% (customer stories). See how resolution rate is measured.

Which Aftersales plan fits a team moving from Chatbase?
- Free ($0): one seat, live chat and email inbox, a public help center and the first 50 Agent resolutions free. Good for a side-by-side test.
- Starter ($24 per seat): small teams that want the shared inbox plus Agent.
- Growth ($69 per seat, most popular): unlimited team inboxes, workflows and round-robin, phone with transfers and recording, private and multilingual help center, Monitors and 20 free Lite seats. We run the migration with you.
- Scale ($109 per seat): SSO, SAML and SCIM, multi-brand messenger and help center, warehouse sync, a dedicated success manager and 50 free Lite seats.
Add-ons are optional: Copilot at $29 per rep a month billed annually ($35 monthly), Proactive at $99 a month and Insights Pro at $99 a month. If you want to keep your helpdesk, Agent on its own runs inside Zendesk, Salesforce Service Cloud or Freshdesk.
How do you switch from Chatbase to Aftersales?
Most teams switch in two to four weeks by running both tools side by side before cutting over.
- Export your sources and history. Collect the documents, URLs and Q&A you trained your Chatbase agent on, and export recent conversations. Chatbase's API documents conversation export.
- Load Knowledge. Import help content into Aftersales Knowledge, the one source for Agent, reps and the help center.
- Rewrite instructions as procedures. Turn your Chatbase instructions and actions into plain-language procedures with spend limits and escalation rules.
- Connect your systems. Shopify, Stripe and Salesforce connect directly; anything else connects through the Aftersales API or webhooks. Confirm specific connectors on a call.
- Connect channels. Start with email and chat, then WhatsApp, SMS, social and phone.
- Pilot one channel. Route a single channel or topic to Agent for a week and read every escalation.
- Cut over. Swap the website widget, point the remaining channels to Aftersales and cancel Chatbase once the pilot holds. Most teams finish the inbox migration in an afternoon.
