What is the difference between a rule-based chatbot and an AI agent?
A rule-based chatbot follows a script you draw: buttons, keywords and decision trees. An AI agent reads the customer's message, works out what they need, and follows a procedure that can call your systems to finish the job. For support, the second type is what moves resolution rate.
- Rule-based bots are predictable and cheap. They suit narrow, high-volume paths such as collecting an order number, routing by topic or showing opening hours. They break when customers phrase things in ways the tree did not expect.
- AI answer bots reply from your help center. They cut "how do I" questions but cannot change anything, so order, billing and account requests still reach a person.
- AI agents that take actions look up the order, check the policy and act: issue the refund, send the replacement, update the address. They need guardrails, such as spend limits and escalation rules, because they change real data.
This list is about support, not lead generation. We skipped bots built mainly to book demos or qualify leads. If you only want a chat widget, see our guide to live chat software; for website bots in general, see AI chatbots for websites.
How do the best customer service chatbots compare?
Most tools on this list now sell an AI agent rather than a scripted bot. The real differences are which actions the agent can take, where it runs, and what you pay for.

How did we compare these chatbots?
We judged each tool on what happens to a real support conversation, not on demo answers. Prices come from each vendor's own pricing page in October 2026; where a vendor does not publish prices we describe the model instead.
- Resolution, not deflection: can it finish the request, or does it only answer and hand off?
- Actions: which systems it can act on, and whether those actions are native or something you build.
- Control: procedures, guardrails, escalation rules and how handoffs reach your team.
- Pricing model: per resolution, per outcome, per session, per conversation or per message credit, and what you pay for when the bot fails.
- Fit: self-serve versus sales-led, standalone versus inside an existing helpdesk.
Aftersales is our product and we put it first. Each entry, ours included, has a "watch out for" so you can judge the list on its merits. Our resolution rate guide explains how to measure any of these fairly.
The 10 best customer service chatbots in 2026
1. Aftersales: best for an AI agent that resolves support conversations and takes actions within guardrails
Aftersales Agent resolves conversations end to end instead of answering FAQs and handing everything else over. You describe a procedure in plain language, or import an existing macro, and Agent turns it into steps. Each step maps to a connector or API with explicit, revocable permissions, so it can look up and verify an order in Shopify, create a replacement, or issue a Stripe refund when your procedure allows it.
Guardrails cap spend and refund value, and escalation rules hand the conversation to a person on sentiment, keywords, customer tier or legal language. The handoff includes the data Agent looked up and what it already tried. Agent works in 31 languages across email, live chat, WhatsApp, SMS and social, and it runs either in the Aftersales Inbox or inside Zendesk, Salesforce Service Cloud or Freshdesk with no seats or migration.
Where it is weaker: Aftersales does not offer a drag-and-drop decision-tree builder, so teams that want fully scripted, button-driven bots will find Tidio Flows or Botpress more familiar. Its named actions are Shopify, Stripe and Salesforce; anything else connects through the Aftersales API or webhooks, so confirm specific connectors on a call.
- Best for
- Support teams that want a chatbot to finish routine conversations, including orders, refunds and account questions, not just answer them
- Pricing
- Free plan (1 seat, first 50 Agent resolutions free). Starter $24, Growth $69, Scale $109 per seat/month billed annually. Agent $0.99 per resolution, counted once per conversation; conversations Agent can't help with are free. Agent never needs a seat.
- Strengths
- Plain-language procedures, Shopify and Stripe actions, spend guardrails and escalation rules, 31 languages, Monitors that score every conversation. Median 71% of conversations resolved after 90 days.
- Watch out for
- No visual flow builder; native actions limited to Shopify, Stripe and Salesforce, with other systems through the API or webhooks. Founded in 2024, so it is a younger vendor than most on this list.
2. Intercom Fin: best for teams that want a mature AI agent with a large ecosystem
Fin is Intercom's AI agent. It is included on every Intercom plan and can also run on top of another helpdesk such as Salesforce, with no seats required. Intercom says Fin takes action on external systems and answers across chat, email, phone and more.
Read the billing definition carefully. Intercom counts an outcome when a customer confirms the issue is resolved, does not ask for more help after Fin replies, or when Fin completes a workflow (a Procedure), including handoffs. That last case means some escalated conversations are billable.
- Best for
- SaaS and product-led teams that want an established vendor with in-app messaging, help center and AI agent in one
- Pricing
- Fin from $0.99 per outcome. Helpdesk seats: Essential $19, Advanced $85, Expert $132 per seat/month billed annually. Fin on another helpdesk has a minimum monthly commitment (Intercom gives 50 outcomes as an example).
- Strengths
- Mature product, procedures, broad channel coverage, works standalone on other helpdesks.
- Watch out for
- Outcomes can include handoffs after a completed workflow; seat prices rise steeply on Advanced and Expert. See our Intercom alternative page.
3. Zendesk AI agents: best for teams already running on Zendesk
Zendesk AI agents are included on Suite plans and billed per automated resolution, meaning a request resolved without escalation to a human. Zendesk describes them as reasoning through multi-intent requests and orchestrating actions across systems, with procedures written in natural language and an action builder on Suite Team.
The appeal is staying in one vendor if your tickets, macros and reporting already live in Zendesk. The cost is seat pricing that climbs quickly, plus resolutions beyond your plan's allowance.
- Best for
- Mid-size and enterprise Zendesk customers who want the AI agent native to their existing helpdesk
- Pricing
- Suite Team $55 and Suite Professional $115 per agent/month billed annually, with a set number of automated resolutions included and more billed per automated resolution. Enterprise is quoted.
- Strengths
- Native to Zendesk ticketing, routing and reporting; web, mobile, social, email and voice channels; Zendesk says 80 languages.
- Watch out for
- Seat costs add up; check how many automated resolutions your plan includes. Aftersales Agent can also run inside Zendesk if you want to keep the helpdesk and change the AI. See Zendesk pricing.
4. Decagon: best for large enterprises that want a fully managed AI agent build
Decagon is an enterprise AI agent platform for chat, email and voice. Workflows are defined as Agent Operating Procedures (AOPs) in natural language, with tool connectors, simulations, A/B testing and always-on QA around them.
Decagon is clearly the stronger choice when you have very high volume, complex voice and chat flows, and budget for a hands-on enterprise deployment. It is not built for a small team that wants to sign up and go live this week.
- Best for
- Enterprises with large support volume and engineering support for integrations
- Pricing
- Not published. Decagon says it offers per-conversation pricing (most customers) or per-resolution pricing at a higher rate with no charge for escalations.
- Strengths
- Natural-language AOPs, voice, testing and experimentation tooling, enterprise QA.
- Watch out for
- Sales-led and quoted only; expect an annual contract. Compare it in Decagon vs Sierra.
5. Ada: best for enterprise automation across voice, messaging and email
Ada is one of the longest-running customer service automation vendors. Its AI agent works across voice, messaging and email, and Ada positions it around automating complex standard operating procedures with tools that let the agent complete customer tasks.
- Best for
- Enterprise support organizations, especially those that want one AI agent across phone and digital channels
- Pricing
- Not published on Ada's site; quoted by sales.
- Strengths
- Voice plus digital channels, testing and coaching tools for the agent, long track record in enterprise.
- Watch out for
- No public pricing; heavier implementation than self-serve tools. See our Ada alternative page.
6. Gorgias AI Agent: best for Shopify brands that price support by ticket
Gorgias is an ecommerce helpdesk with an AI Agent included on every plan. Pricing is by ticket volume rather than seats, with each automated interaction billed on top. Higher plans add actions such as cancelling orders and applying discounts.
- Best for
- Shopify, WooCommerce and BigCommerce stores that want helpdesk and AI agent from an ecommerce specialist
- Pricing
- Helpdesk from $10/month (Starter, 50 tickets, monthly billing). AI Agent billed per automated interaction: $1.00 on Starter, $0.90 on Basic and Pro, $0.85 on Advanced.
- Strengths
- Deep ecommerce focus, unlimited-style seat model, AI actions for order changes and discounts.
- Watch out for
- AI actions are not on Starter, and ticket overages add up in peak season. See Gorgias pricing and Gorgias alternative.
7. Tidio: best for small sites that want rule-based flows and an AI agent in one
Tidio is the clearest example of both bot types side by side. Flows is a rule-based automation builder (triggers, conditions, messages), while Lyro is an AI agent that answers from your knowledge and, on Growth and higher, can use native Shopify actions. Lyro can also be bought on its own and added to Zendesk, Salesforce or another helpdesk.
- Best for
- Small businesses and Shopify stores that want low-cost live chat, scripted flows and AI answers
- Pricing
- Free plan available. Starter $24.17/month billed annually (100 billable conversations). Lyro from $32.50/month (50 conversations). Flows from $24.17/month (2,000 visitors reached).
- Strengths
- Cheap entry point, visual rule-based Flows for proactive and scripted chats, AI agent on top.
- Watch out for
- Billing is split across conversations, Lyro conversations and Flows visitors, so model costs before you grow. See Tidio pricing.
8. Freshdesk Freddy AI Agent: best for Freshdesk teams that want AI included with seats
Freshdesk includes the Freddy AI Agent on its plans with the first 500 sessions included, then sells more sessions in packs. An MCP actions add-on lets the agent call external tools.
- Best for
- Teams already on Freshdesk, or cost-conscious teams that want a helpdesk with an AI agent included
- Pricing
- Growth $19, Pro $55, Enterprise $89 per agent/month billed annually; first 500 AI Agent sessions included, then $49 per 100 sessions. MCP actions $15 per 1,000.
- Strengths
- Low seat price, AI included from the first plan, Copilot add-on available.
- Watch out for
- Session-based billing charges for conversations the AI does not resolve. Aftersales Agent can also run inside Freshdesk. See Freshdesk pricing.
9. Botpress: best for teams that want to build a custom bot themselves
Botpress is a builder platform. Botpress Studio is a visual AI agent builder, and you can deploy the result on webchat, WhatsApp and Slack, either in Botpress Desk or on top of Zendesk, Intercom, HubSpot or Salesforce. Botpress says its agents handle refunds, order corrections and account updates, but you design and connect those workflows.
- Best for
- Teams with a builder or developer who want full control over flows, logic and integrations
- Pricing
- Free $0 (100 conversations). Plus $150/month billed annually (250 conversations, extra packs at $0.65 per conversation). Team $750/month billed annually (1,500 conversations). Enterprise and managed builds quoted.
- Strengths
- Flexible visual builder that mixes scripted steps and AI, many channels, no per-seat cost.
- Watch out for
- You own the build and the maintenance; reaching high resolution takes ongoing work.
10. Chatbase: best for a quick AI chatbot trained on your docs
Chatbase lets you train an AI agent on your website and documents and deploy it to web chat, email, WhatsApp, Slack and voice. Paid plans add AI Actions, such as looking up an order or retrieving invoices, and the Standard plan adds integrations such as Stripe and Zendesk, a helpdesk and API access.
- Best for
- Small teams that want an AI answer bot live in an afternoon
- Pricing
- Free (50 message credits/month). Hobby $40, Standard $150, Pro $500 per month. 20% off yearly.
- Strengths
- Fast setup, broad channel list, actions on paid plans.
- Watch out for
- Priced by message credits, not resolutions; the free plan has no AI Actions; lighter on escalation rules and QA than support-first platforms. See our Chatbase alternative page.
How are customer service chatbots priced?
Chatbot pricing now follows five models, and the unit matters more than the headline price because it decides what you pay for when the bot fails.
- Per resolution: you pay only when the AI resolves the conversation (Aftersales at $0.99, Zendesk per automated resolution, Decagon's per-resolution option).
- Per outcome: Intercom Fin at $0.99, where an outcome also includes a completed workflow that ends in a handoff.
- Per interaction or session: Gorgias per automated interaction, Freshdesk per session after the included 500.
- Per conversation: Botpress, Tidio Lyro and Decagon's default option bill conversations the bot handles, resolved or not.
- Per message credit: Chatbase bills by messages.
Example cost (assumptions stated): a team with 3 human agents on Aftersales Growth handles 2,000 conversations a month and Agent resolves 60% of them. Seats cost 3 x $69 = $207 per month billed annually. Agent resolves 1,200 conversations at $0.99 = $1,188. The other 800 conversations Agent could not resolve cost nothing extra. Total: $1,395 per month. Your resolution rate will differ; plug your own numbers into our pricing page.
Start with 50 free resolutions. The Aftersales Free plan includes your first 50 Agent resolutions, so you can test it on real conversations before paying.

How do you roll out a customer service chatbot without hurting CSAT?
- Pull last quarter's conversations and rank the top 10 reasons customers contact you.
- Pick two or three that need data you can connect, such as order status or refunds, and write a procedure for each with explicit limits.
- Set escalation rules before launch: angry sentiment, legal language, high-value customers and anything the bot is unsure about go to a person with context attached.
- Launch on one channel, usually chat, and review every handoff for the first two weeks.
- Track resolution rate, CSAT for AI and humans, and cost per conversation. Aftersales Insights reports all three, and Monitors score every conversation.
- Expand to email, WhatsApp and SMS once the procedures hold up.
