Help Scout vs Zendesk: which is better?
Help Scout is the better pick for small and mid-sized teams that live in email and want a helpdesk people can learn in a day. Zendesk is the better pick for larger teams that need native voice, skills-based routing, HIPAA on a mid-tier plan and a very large app marketplace.
The two tools are built on different ideas. Help Scout makes support feel like personal email: conversations, not ticket numbers, a clean shared inbox and a free plan for up to 5 users. Zendesk is a configurable ticketing platform that scales to big, multi-team operations, and its price climbs with that power.
On AI, both now bill per resolution. Help Scout's AI Answers is $0.75 per resolution with a 3-month free trial. Zendesk includes 5 to 10 automated resolutions per agent per month and charges $2.00 per extra pay-as-you-go resolution. For most teams under 25 people, Help Scout costs less to run. Above that, or with phone and complex routing, Zendesk usually earns its premium.

What are the main differences between Help Scout and Zendesk?
The biggest differences are how each tool models a support request, how far it scales, and how AI is priced.
Conversations vs tickets
Help Scout shows customers a normal email thread, with no ticket number in the subject line, and gives your team a shared inbox with collision detection, saved replies and notes. Zendesk is ticket-first: every request becomes a ticket with fields, forms, statuses and triggers. That structure is overhead for a five-person team and essential for a fifty-person one.
Channels and phone
Help Scout covers email, live chat, SMS, WhatsApp, Instagram and Messenger on its paid plans, and handles calls through an integration. Zendesk's cheapest plan, Support Team, is email ticketing only. Messaging, live chat, native telephony and the help center start on Suite Team, and IVR phone menus and skills-based routing arrive on Suite Professional. If phone is a core channel, Zendesk is the stronger product.
AI agents and AI pricing
Help Scout's AI Answers answers customers from your Docs and other sources you add. A resolution only counts when the customer gets an AI answer and does not escalate, search further or say they still need help, and you can cap monthly spend. Zendesk bundles a small allowance of automated resolutions per agent and bills the rest, with committed volumes priced lower than pay-as-you-go. Both are answer-focused by default. If you need the AI to change an order or issue a refund, check what each vendor's AI can do in your own stack before you sign.
Help center and self-service
Help Scout includes Docs knowledge bases on every plan, including Free. Zendesk's help center starts on Suite Team, not on Support Team.
Ecosystem and configuration
Zendesk has one of the largest marketplaces in the category, plus sandbox environments, custom roles and approval workflows on Enterprise. Help Scout's integration list is shorter but covers the common tools, with Salesforce, Jira and HubSpot integrations listed on Plus.
Is Help Scout or Zendesk cheaper?
Help Scout is usually cheaper once you need chat and a knowledge base, because Zendesk's $19 plan has neither. Zendesk is cheaper only if you need email ticketing alone.
Worked example. Assumptions: 10 agents, about 1,000 AI resolutions a month, list prices, Zendesk on annual billing, Help Scout at the per-user price on its pricing page (annual billing is discounted further). Zendesk's committed resolution rate depends on the volume you commit to, so we use the published $2.00 pay-as-you-go rate.
| Line item | Help Scout Plus | Zendesk Suite Team | Zendesk Suite Professional |
|---|---|---|---|
| Seats (10) | $450 | $550 | $1,150 |
| Included AI resolutions | None (3-month free trial) | 50 | 100 |
| Billable AI resolutions | 1,000 x $0.75 = $750 | 950 x $2.00 = $1,900 | 900 x $2.00 = $1,800 |
| Monthly total | $1,200 | $2,450 | $2,950 |

Adding Zendesk Copilot on Suite Professional adds $500 a month for 10 agents. Help Scout's AI Drafts and Summarize are already part of its plans. Committing to a Zendesk resolution volume will lower its AI line, so ask for a quote if AI is a big part of your plan.

Should your team pick Help Scout or Zendesk?
Pick by team size, channel mix and how much configuration you want to own.
- Startups and teams of 1 to 5: Help Scout. The Free plan covers 5 users and a Docs site, and paid plans stay simple.
- Email-first SaaS or ecommerce teams of 5 to 25: Help Scout, unless you already know you will need native phone.
- Phone-heavy or contact center teams: Zendesk, with native telephony from Suite Team and IVR on Suite Professional.
- Healthcare or other regulated teams: both offer HIPAA options, on Help Scout Pro and on Zendesk Suite Professional and up. Compare the full cost of those tiers.
- 50+ agents, many teams or brands: Zendesk, for routing depth, roles and its marketplace.
- Teams that want AI to resolve a large share of volume: model the AI line, not just seats. Help Scout's $0.75 rate is lower than Zendesk's $2.00 pay-as-you-go rate.

Is there a third option besides Help Scout and Zendesk?
Yes. If you want AI that finishes the job rather than answering questions, Aftersales is a third option built around resolution. Agent resolves conversations end to end and takes actions, such as looking up and verifying a Shopify order, creating a replacement or issuing a Stripe refund, inside spend limits and escalation rules you set. Copilot drafts replies that cite their sources, and Inbox is the shared helpdesk for everything that needs a person.
| Feature | Aftersales |
|---|---|
| Seat pricing | Free $0 (1 seat); Starter $24, Growth $69, Scale $109 per seat/month billed annually (monthly billing is 20% more) |
| AI pricing | Agent $0.99 per resolution on every plan, counted once per conversation; conversations Agent can't help with are free |
| AI actions | Shopify order lookup and replacements, Stripe refunds, Salesforce, with spend limits and escalation rules |
| Channels | Email, web and in-app chat, WhatsApp, SMS, social DMs, Slack Connect; phone with transfers and recording on Growth and up |
| Keep your helpdesk | Agent can run inside Zendesk, Salesforce Service Cloud or Freshdesk, no seats or migration, minimum monthly commitment |
| Security | GDPR DPA, US-hosted; SSO/SAML/SCIM on Scale; HIPAA support with a signed BAA on the Enterprise plan |

Already on Zendesk and happy with it? You do not have to move. Aftersales Agent can run inside Zendesk at $0.99 per resolution, which is below Zendesk's published $2.00 pay-as-you-go rate.
Be clear-eyed about the trade-offs. Aftersales is not the cheapest option for a small email-only team: Help Scout's free plan and $0.75 AI rate are hard to beat there. Aftersales is a newer platform, founded in London in 2024, so its integration list is shorter than Zendesk's. Confirm niche integrations on a call. Where it fits, the results are measurable: median resolution by Agent is 71% after 90 days, and Northwind Outdoors cut cost per conversation by 41%.
