What does WISMO mean?
WISMO is short for "where is my order". Support teams use it to label any contact where a customer asks about the status, location or delivery date of something they bought.
It shows up in many forms:
- "Has my order shipped yet?"
- "My tracking hasn't updated in four days."
- "It says delivered but I don't have it."
- "Will it arrive before Saturday?"
- "Can I still change the address?"
Some teams also use WISMR ("where is my refund") for refund-status questions. They follow the same pattern and respond to the same fixes.
Why does WISMO drive so much ticket volume?
WISMO drives volume because the customer has paid, cannot see progress and has no faster way to find out than asking. Every order can create one, and a single delay can create several per order.
- Post-purchase anxiety. The Narvar State of Post-Purchase report found that about two-thirds of online shoppers feel anxious after they click buy.
- Silent gaps. Orders sit in "label created" or "in transit" for days with no update.
- Tracking that lives elsewhere. Carrier pages, unclear links or missing emails send customers to support.
- Peak season. Carrier delays around holidays turn a steady stream into a surge.
- Repeat contacts. A vague answer ("it's on the way") brings the same customer back two days later.
WISMO is also expensive in a quiet way. Each answer is simple, but it takes an agent a lookup in the store, a lookup in the carrier system and a written reply, and it pushes harder conversations further down the queue.
How do you measure WISMO?
Measure WISMO as a share of conversations and as a rate per order, so growth in sales does not hide progress.
| Metric | Formula |
|---|---|
| WISMO share | WISMO conversations ÷ all conversations × 100 |
| WISMO contact rate | WISMO conversations ÷ orders shipped × 100 |
| WISMO automated resolution rate | WISMO conversations resolved without a human ÷ WISMO conversations × 100 |
| Repeat WISMO rate | Customers with 2+ WISMO contacts on one order ÷ customers with any WISMO contact × 100 |
Tag conversations by intent (automatically if your helpdesk supports it) and break WISMO down by carrier, warehouse and shipping method. The breakdown usually points at the fix.
How do you reduce WISMO?
Reduce WISMO in three layers: prevent it, make it self-serve, then resolve the rest automatically.
Layer 1: Prevent
- Show a realistic delivery date at checkout and in the confirmation email.
- Send proactive updates at four moments: shipped, out for delivery, delivered and any delay or exception.
- Message customers first when you know about a delay. One proactive email replaces many inbound questions.
- Explain "label created" in plain words so a quiet tracking page does not look like a lost order.
Layer 2: Self-serve
- Add a branded tracking page linked from every email and from the account area.
- Put an order lookup (order number plus email) in your help center and chat widget.
- Publish a short "delivery FAQ" covering delivered-not-received, customs and address changes.
Layer 3: Resolve automatically
- Connect your AI agent to order and fulfillment data so it answers with the real status, not a generic link.
- Give it rules for exceptions: when to reship, when to refund, when to open a carrier claim, and a spend limit.
- Escalate to a person when sentiment is negative, the order is high value or the customer mentions a chargeback.
Answer order-status questions with the real status. Agent verifies the order in Shopify and replies in one step.
What are good WISMO reply templates?
A good WISMO reply states the current status, the expected date and what happens if that date is missed. Copy and adapt these.
1. Not shipped yet
Hi {first_name}, your order {order_number} is being packed and will ship by {ship_by_date}. You will get a tracking link by email as soon as it leaves us. Expected delivery is {eta}.
2. In transit, on time
Hi {first_name}, good news: order {order_number} is on its way with {carrier} and is due on {eta}. Track it here: {tracking_url}. Tracking can pause for a day or two between scans, which is normal.
3. Delayed
Hi {first_name}, I am sorry, your order {order_number} has been delayed by {carrier}. The new delivery estimate is {new_eta}. If it has not arrived by {eta_plus_2}, reply here and we will send a replacement or refund you in full, your choice.
4. Marked delivered, not received
Hi {first_name}, {carrier} shows order {order_number} as delivered on {delivered_date} at {time}. Could you check with neighbors, your building's mail room and any safe place? Parcels sometimes turn up within 48 hours. If it has not appeared by {date}, reply and we will {reship_or_refund}.
5. Address change request
Hi {first_name}, I have updated the delivery address for order {order_number} to {new_address}. [If shipped: The parcel is already with {carrier}, so I have requested a redirect. They will confirm within 24 hours.]
How do you automate WISMO with AI?
Automate WISMO by giving an AI agent access to the same data a human would check, plus rules for what it may do about problems.
- Connect order data. The agent must verify the customer and read the order, fulfillment and tracking status.
- Write procedures in plain language. For example: "If an order is more than 5 business days past its delivery estimate, offer a free reshipment or a full refund."
- Set guardrails. Limit reship and refund value, and require approval above it.
- Set escalation rules. Hand off on negative sentiment, legal language, VIP tier or repeated contacts.
- Measure resolution, not deflection. Count a WISMO conversation as resolved only if the customer did not have to come back.
How Aftersales handles WISMO
Aftersales Agent verifies orders and runs order actions in Shopify, including replacements, and can issue refunds through Stripe. It follows your procedures, escalation rules and spend guardrails, works across email, live chat, WhatsApp, SMS and social, and answers in 31 languages. Conversations it resolves cost $0.99 each, counted once per conversation; ones it cannot help with are free. Insights flags spikes, such as a rise in delay questions tied to one carrier, as they happen.

How do you handle WISMO during peak season?
- Publish cut-off dates for holiday delivery on the site and in confirmation emails.
- Pre-write delay messages and send them in bulk as soon as a carrier reports a backlog.
- Pin a delivery banner in chat and your help center.
- Raise your AI agent's handling of standard WISMO and keep people on exceptions.
- Review WISMO share daily during peak and adjust messaging.
