Best social media customer service software in 2026: 10 tools for DMs and comments

Customers ask for help in Instagram DMs, Facebook comments and TikTok replies, and expect an answer where they asked. We compared ten tools on coverage, moderation, AI that resolves DMs and total cost, starting with Aftersales, which keeps social DMs in one inbox with every other channel.

What is social media customer service software, and do you need a social tool or a helpdesk?

Social media customer service software lets a team answer customers who message or comment on Instagram, Facebook, X, TikTok and similar networks from one shared queue, instead of logging in to each app. The better tools add assignment, saved replies, history, response-time reporting and, more and more, AI that drafts or resolves replies.

Two kinds of product compete for this job, and it helps to know which one you are buying:

  • Social care tools (Sprout Social, Hootsuite, Agorapulse, NapoleonCat, Statusbrew, Emplifi, Sprinklr) grew out of social media management. They are strong on public comments, ad comments, moderation rules, publishing and listening. Support is one feature among many, and they rarely see your order or billing data.
  • Helpdesks with social channels (Aftersales, Gorgias, Zendesk) treat a DM as a ticket in the same queue as email, chat and phone. They are strong on routing, SLAs, customer history and actions such as refunds, and lighter on publishing, listening and comment moderation.

Many teams run one of each: the social team keeps its social care tool for comments and campaigns, and private DMs that need an order lookup or refund go to the helpdesk. If your customers also message on WhatsApp or by text, see our lists of the best WhatsApp customer service software and best SMS customer service software.

How do the best social media customer service tools compare?

Aftersales is the pick if social DMs are support conversations that need an order lookup, refund or replacement, and you want AI to resolve them in the same queue as every other channel. Sprout Social, Hootsuite and Agorapulse are stronger for public comments, moderation and publishing. Sprinklr and Emplifi suit large brands with high public volume.

Checked October 2026. Network coverage varies by region and account type (TikTok business messaging is not available everywhere). Confirm current prices on each vendor's site.

How did we compare these social customer service tools?

We judged each tool as a support team would, and checked features and prices on each vendor's own site in October 2026. Where a vendor does not publish prices, we describe the pricing model instead.

  • Coverage: which networks, and whether the tool handles DMs, public comments and ad comments.
  • Support workflow: assignment, routing, saved replies, SLAs and customer history across channels.
  • AI: does it only suggest replies, or can it resolve a conversation and take an action such as a refund?
  • Moderation: rules that hide spam or abusive comments and flag the ones that need a person.
  • Total cost: seats, profile limits, add-ons and AI charges together.

Aftersales is our product and we list it first. Every entry, ours included, has a "watch out for" so you can judge the list on its merits.

How fast do you have to reply to social DMs?

Answer first: social networks set their own rules for when and how a business can reply, and your software has to work within them. The one that catches support teams most often is the reply window on Meta's messaging platforms.

According to Meta's Messenger Platform policy overview, businesses have up to 24 hours to respond to a user's message, and a Human Agent tag lets a person reply manually within a 7-day period. In practice that means:

  • Answer fast, or at least acknowledge. An AI agent or auto-acknowledgement that replies within minutes keeps the window open while a person works on the case.
  • Move long cases to another channel. If a claim will take days, ask for an email address in the thread so the conversation can continue there with full history.
  • Take private details private. When a customer posts an order number or complaint in a public comment, reply publicly once and move the rest to DMs.
  • Check regional limits. Some networks restrict business messaging by country or account type, so confirm coverage for your markets before you buy.

The 10 best social media customer service software tools

1. Aftersales: best for support teams that want social DMs resolved, not just answered

Aftersales puts social DMs in the same Inbox as email, web and in-app chat, WhatsApp, SMS, phone and Slack Connect, so a customer who DMs on Instagram and then emails is one customer with one history. Tickets, views, SLAs and side conversations into Slack work the same on every channel.

Agent reads the first message for intent, order numbers, sentiment and language (31 languages), then follows the procedure you wrote in plain language: it can verify an order in Shopify, create a replacement or issue a Stripe refund within the spend limits you set. Escalation rules fire on sentiment, keywords, customer tier or legal language, which matters on social, where an angry customer can go public. When Agent hands off, the person gets the thread, the data Agent looked up and what it already tried. Median resolution by Agent is 71% of conversations after 90 days.

Copilot drafts replies that cite their sources and translates them, and Insights flags a spike in a topic (say, a run of DMs about a delayed launch) in real time.

Where it is weaker: Aftersales is a support platform, not a social media management tool. It does not schedule posts, run social listening or moderate public comments at scale. If most of your social workload is public comments, ad comments and community management, Agorapulse, Sprout Social or Hootsuite is the better fit, and many teams run one of them alongside Aftersales. Confirm which networks and account types you need on a call.

Best for
Support teams that get order, billing and account questions in social DMs and want them in one queue with an AI agent that takes actions
Pricing
Free plan (1 seat, live chat + email inbox, first 50 Agent resolutions free). Starter $24, Growth $69, Scale $109 per seat/month billed annually (20% more monthly). Agent $0.99 per resolution, counted once per conversation; conversations Agent can't help with are free. See pricing.
Strengths
Agent acts in Shopify and Stripe with guardrails; escalation on sentiment, keywords, tier and legal language; full handoff context; one queue for every channel; GDPR DPA, US-hosted.
Watch out for
No publishing, listening or bulk comment moderation. Free plan covers live chat and email, so check social channel setup for your plan. Confirm specific networks on a call.

Let Agent answer your DMs.Start free; your first 50 Agent resolutions are free, then $0.99 per resolution.

2. Sprout Social: best social care tool for marketing and care teams sharing one platform

Sprout Social is a social media management platform whose Smart Inbox collects messages from networks including X, Instagram, Facebook, TikTok, LinkedIn and Google Business in one stream, where you can reply, filter and assign messages as cases. It also covers publishing, analytics and, as an add-on, listening. Sprout integrates with Salesforce Service Cloud and with Zendesk (on its Advanced plan), so social conversations can create or update helpdesk tickets.

Sprout is the better pick than Aftersales if your social team runs publishing, comments and care together and wants one tool for all of it. It is expensive per seat, and its AI suggests and enhances replies rather than refunding an order or creating a replacement.

Best for
Brands where marketing and care share a social inbox, publishing and reporting
Pricing
Essentials $79 per seat/month annual ($99 monthly), Standard $199, Professional $299, Advanced $399 per seat/month annual; Enterprise on quote. 30-day free trial. Listening and Premium Analytics are add-ons.
Strengths
Mature Smart Inbox; case management; Salesforce and Zendesk integrations; strong analytics; wide network coverage including TikTok.
Watch out for
Reply-enhancing AI and helpdesk integrations sit on the Advanced plan. Per-seat cost adds up fast for a support team.

3. Hootsuite: best for teams that want DM automation inside a social suite

Hootsuite is a social media management platform with an inbox for messages and comments across Facebook, Instagram, X, WhatsApp, TikTok, LinkedIn and Threads. Its plans list DM automations and smart replies, and higher plans add assignment and auto-routing of messages to the right person, plus social listening.

Hootsuite suits a team that wants publishing, listening and an inbox with simple automated replies in one product. TikTok messaging needs a TikTok Business account and is not available in every region. Like other social suites, it does not act in your store or billing system.

Best for
Social teams that want an inbox, automated DM replies and listening alongside publishing
Pricing
Standard $99, Professional $199, Advanced $399 per user/month billed annually; Enterprise on quote. 14-day free trial.
Strengths
Broad network coverage including WhatsApp and TikTok; DM automations; listening included; long track record.
Watch out for
Per-user pricing gets costly for support teams. Assignment and auto-routing need higher plans. No order or refund actions.

4. Agorapulse: best for comment and ad-comment moderation

Agorapulse is a social media management tool with a unified inbox for messages, comments and reviews across Facebook, Instagram, Threads, X, LinkedIn, YouTube, Pinterest, Google Business, TikTok, Bluesky and Reddit. Professional adds ad comment moderation on Facebook, Instagram, TikTok and LinkedIn and manual assignment; Advanced adds saved replies, automated moderation rules, labels, sentiment detection and bulk actions.

If your heaviest social workload is public comments, especially on paid ads, Agorapulse is a better fit than Aftersales. It is a good partner tool: keep moderation in Agorapulse and send private order questions to your helpdesk.

Best for
Teams that moderate high volumes of organic and ad comments
Pricing
Standard $79, Professional $119, Advanced $149 per user/month billed annually ($99, $149, $199 monthly); Custom on quote. 30-day free trial.
Strengths
Ad comment moderation; moderation rules; wide network list; lower per-user price than Sprout or Hootsuite.
Watch out for
Saved replies and rules need Advanced; AI reply suggestions only on Custom. Not a helpdesk.

5. Sprinklr: best for global enterprises running social care inside a contact center

Sprinklr Service is an AI-native contact center platform that handles more than 30 voice, social and digital channels in one agent workspace. It includes AI agents for routine questions, skill-based routing, an agent copilot with case summaries and suggested responses, and AI quality management.

For a large enterprise with millions of public mentions, many brands and a voice contact center to unify, Sprinklr covers more ground than Aftersales. It is sold by quote and is a heavy implementation for a mid-size team.

Best for
Global enterprises unifying social, messaging and voice care at very high volume
Pricing
Not published; quote only.
Strengths
30+ channels in one workspace; AI agents and copilot; routing; quality management; listening across the wider Sprinklr suite.
Watch out for
Enterprise pricing and implementation effort. More platform than most mid-size teams need.

6. Emplifi: best for large brands that want a social-first care inbox with Salesforce

Emplifi's Social Care product is a unified inbox for DMs, comments and mentions across Facebook, Instagram, X, TikTok, YouTube, LinkedIn and WhatsApp (customer service only). It offers AI case summaries and reply assistance, automated routing based on agent skills and workload, sentiment-based escalation and, on the Advanced tier, a Salesforce CRM integration.

Emplifi suits enterprise brands whose care team lives in social and whose marketing team already uses Emplifi. Social Care is sold by quote, and its published social marketing plans start at $1,249 a month, which signals who it is for.

Best for
Enterprise consumer brands with large public social volume and a Salesforce stack
Pricing
Social Care Essential and Advanced are quote only. Social marketing plans start at $1,249/month (Essential) and $2,499/month (Advanced).
Strengths
Comments, DMs and mentions in one inbox; skills-based routing; AI summaries; Salesforce integration.
Watch out for
High entry price. AI assists agents rather than resolving with actions in your store or billing system.

7. NapoleonCat: best value for social customer service on a small team

NapoleonCat is a social media management tool built around a social inbox and auto-moderation. It covers Facebook, Instagram, Messenger, X, TikTok, LinkedIn, YouTube and Google Business, plus App Store and Google Play reviews, and its free trial includes the inbox, auto-moderation, publisher, analytics and reporting.

NapoleonCat is a strong pick for a small team or agency that mainly needs to answer and moderate comments and DMs across several profiles at a modest price. App review replies are a useful extra for mobile apps. It has no helpdesk features beyond social.

Best for
Small teams and agencies that need an affordable social inbox with auto-moderation
Pricing
Priced by plan bundles of users and social profiles rather than per seat; prices on the vendor's site. 14-day free trial, no credit card.
Strengths
Auto-moderation rules; app store review replies; ad comment handling; simple to run.
Watch out for
No email, chat or phone. No AI agent that resolves conversations. Extra users and profiles raise the price.

8. Statusbrew: best for rule-based moderation and SLA tracking across many profiles

Statusbrew is a social media management platform with a unified inbox, a rule engine for automating comment handling, publishing and reporting. Its Standard plan is pitched at marketing and support teams and adds auto-comment management and Google Business Profile; Premium adds AI sentiment analysis, workflow approvals, team reporting, competitor benchmarking and listening.

Statusbrew suits teams that manage many profiles and want rules to hide spam, route and tag comments without paying enterprise prices. Like other social tools, it does not take actions in your store or billing system.

Best for
Teams managing many social profiles that want automated moderation and team reporting
Pricing
Lite (1 user, 5 profiles), Standard (3 users, 10 profiles), Premium (6 users, 15 profiles), billed annually; Enterprise on quote; agency plan from $49/month per client. 14-day free trial.
Strengths
Rule engine for comments; plan bundles include several users; listening on Premium; HubSpot and Salesforce on Enterprise.
Watch out for
Plan limits on users and profiles. Sentiment and listening need Premium. Not a helpdesk.

9. Gorgias: best for Shopify stores that want social comments in an ecommerce helpdesk

Gorgias is an ecommerce helpdesk that brings Instagram mentions, DMs, comments and ad comments, plus Facebook, into the same queue as email and chat, with order history beside each conversation. Its AI Agent answers and acts on ecommerce questions, and rules and macros automate common social replies.

For a Shopify brand whose social workload includes a lot of ad comments, Gorgias handles that inside the helpdesk better than Aftersales does. Pricing is by ticket volume, so a viral post can push you into overage.

Best for
Shopify and ecommerce brands that want Instagram and Facebook comments handled in the helpdesk
Pricing
Starter $10, Basic $50, Pro $300, Advanced $750 per month billed annually (300, 2,000 and 5,000 tickets on Basic, Pro and Advanced), overage $0.36-$0.40 per ticket. AI Agent $0.90 per automated interaction annual, $1.00 monthly.
Strengths
Instagram comments and ad comments in the helpdesk; order context; AI Agent for ecommerce; large app ecosystem.
Watch out for
Ticket-based pricing swings with social volume. Built around ecommerce, less suited to SaaS or services.

10. Zendesk: best for large support teams already on Zendesk

Zendesk Suite brings Facebook, Instagram, X and WhatsApp messaging into its agent workspace on Suite Team and Suite Professional, alongside email, chat and voice. It adds AI agents priced by automated resolution and a large marketplace of apps, including social care tools that feed tickets into Zendesk.

If your team already runs on Zendesk, adding social messaging there is the least disruptive option, and you can also run Aftersales Agent inside Zendesk to resolve DMs without migrating. Zendesk is weaker on public comment moderation, so pair it with a social tool if comments matter.

Best for
Larger support teams already on Zendesk that want DMs as tickets
Pricing
Support Team $19, Suite Team $55, Suite Professional $115 per agent/month annual; Enterprise on quote. Social messaging on Suite plans. AI agents include 5-10 automated resolutions per agent per month, then $2.00 each pay-as-you-go.
Strengths
Mature ticketing and routing; DMs from major networks; big app marketplace; works with Aftersales Agent.
Watch out for
Comment moderation and listening need another tool. Add-ons and AI charges raise total cost. Some messaging platforms carry extra fees.

How much does social media customer service software cost for a 5-person team?

For a 5-person team handling 2,000 social conversations a month, expect roughly $600 to $1,400 a month depending on whether you want AI to resolve DMs or only want a shared inbox. Assumptions below use list prices billed annually and exclude taxes and add-ons.

  • Aftersales Growth: 5 seats × $69 = $345. If Agent resolves 40% of conversations, 800 × $0.99 = $792. Total about $1,137, and your team handles only the remaining 1,200 conversations.
  • Agorapulse Professional: 5 users × $119 = $595. People answer every message; you get ad comment moderation and assignment.
  • Sprout Social Standard: 5 seats × $199 = $995, with people answering every message.
  • Hootsuite Professional: 5 users × $199 = $995, with DM automations but no order or refund actions.

The useful comparison is cost per resolved conversation, not price per seat. If Agent takes 40% of DMs, you may need fewer people on social support, which is where the difference shows up. Read our guide to resolution rate before you set targets.

Which social media customer service software is best for your use case?

  • DMs about orders, refunds and accounts, resolved by AI in one queue with every channel: Aftersales.
  • Marketing and care sharing one social platform: Sprout Social.
  • Social inbox with DM automation and listening: Hootsuite.
  • Heavy organic and ad comment moderation: Agorapulse (or NapoleonCat on a smaller budget).
  • Global enterprise unifying social with a voice contact center: Sprinklr.
  • Enterprise social care on Salesforce: Emplifi or Sprout Social.
  • Many profiles, rule-based moderation, modest budget: Statusbrew.
  • Shopify brand with lots of Instagram ad comments: Gorgias.

Frequently asked questions

What is the best social media customer service software?
It depends on the job. Aftersales suits teams whose DMs are support questions that need order data or refunds, resolved by AI in one inbox. Agorapulse, Sprout Social and Hootsuite are stronger for comments, moderation and publishing, and Sprinklr or Emplifi suit large enterprises.
What is the difference between a social media management tool and a helpdesk for social support?
Social media management tools are built for publishing, public comments, moderation and listening, with an inbox for replies. Helpdesks treat a DM as a ticket alongside email, chat and phone, with routing, SLAs, customer history and actions. Many teams use one of each.
Can AI answer Instagram and Facebook DMs?
Yes. Aftersales Agent answers and resolves social DMs, including order lookups, replacements and refunds within limits you set, and hands off to a person with full context. Gorgias AI Agent and Zendesk AI agents also work on social messaging, while social suites such as Hootsuite offer DM automations and smart replies.
How quickly should a brand reply on social media?
As fast as you can. Meta's Messenger policy gives businesses up to 24 hours to respond to a user's message, with a Human Agent tag that allows manual replies within 7 days. An instant acknowledgement or AI answer keeps the conversation inside the window while a person works on it.
Should customer service handle public comments or only DMs?
Both, but differently. Reply to a public complaint once in public so others see you responded, then move order numbers and personal details to DMs. Moderation tools like Agorapulse or NapoleonCat help hide spam and flag comments that need a person.
Can I manage TikTok customer service messages in these tools?
Several tools, including Hootsuite, Sprout Social, Agorapulse and NapoleonCat, list TikTok support. TikTok business messaging needs a TikTok Business account and is not available in every region, so confirm coverage for your markets before you buy.
