Freshdesk vs Zoho Desk: which is better?
Zoho Desk is the better buy for most small and mid-sized teams on a budget, and the obvious pick if you already run Zoho CRM or other Zoho apps. Freshdesk is the better pick for email-heavy teams that want a simpler setup and a more developed AI agent, and are willing to pay more per agent for it.
The price gap is real. Zoho Desk Professional, its most popular edition, is $23 per agent per month billed annually and includes Zia AI. Freshdesk Pro, its most popular plan, is $55 per agent per month billed annually, and its AI assist (Freddy AI Copilot) is a further $29 per agent. Zoho Desk also has a free edition for three users; Freshdesk does not have a free plan.
Freshdesk earns its premium in a few places: Freddy AI Agent replies to customers over email out of the box, Freddy AI Insights adds root-cause alerts on Enterprise, and the product is quicker to configure for a team that only needs ticketing, a portal and SLAs. Zoho Desk asks for more setup but gives you more process tooling (Blueprints, multi-department, custom modules) and more channels per dollar.

Worked example: 10 agents
Assumptions: 10 full agents, annual billing, list prices, the most popular tier on each, AI assist for every agent, and 1,000 AI agent conversations a month after any free allowance is used up.
- Zoho Desk Professional: 10 x $23 = $230 a month, with Zia included.
- Freshdesk Pro: 10 x ($55 + $29 Copilot) = $840, plus 10 packs of 100 Freddy AI Agent sessions at $49 = $490, so $1,330 a month.
Even without Copilot or extra sessions, Freshdesk Pro is $550 a month for 10 agents against $230 for Zoho Desk Professional. On Enterprise tiers it is $890 against $400.
How AI usage is billed
Freshdesk counts Freddy AI Agent usage in sessions. For the Email AI Agent, a session is a 72-hour window from the customer's first email, and every AI reply inside that window counts once. Sessions are counted whether or not the AI resolves the issue, so model cost on volume handled, not on resolutions. The 500 free sessions are a one-time allowance per account, not a monthly one.
Zoho Desk includes Zia in Professional and Enterprise at no extra cost. Its AI Agents can run on Zoho's own model or on your own OpenAI key, in which case you pay the model provider for that usage. Read the AI terms for your edition before you assume it is free at scale.

What are the main differences between Freshdesk and Zoho Desk?
AI agent
Freshdesk is further ahead on an AI agent that talks to customers. Freddy AI Agent Studio is on every plan and includes an Email AI Agent that runs back-and-forth replies and captures feedback. Zoho Desk offers an Answer Bot that responds from your knowledge base and configurable AI Agents (Support Specialist, Resolution Expert and others), which take more setup. Neither is priced per resolution.
AI for human agents
Zoho Desk includes Zia's reply assistant, ticket summaries, sentiment analysis and field prediction from Professional. Freshdesk sells the same category of help as Freddy AI Copilot (response assistant, summaries, sentiment, live translation in 60+ languages) at $29 per agent per month on annual terms. You can buy Copilot for only some agents.
Channels
Freshdesk the product is positioned around email, a customer portal and a web widget. If you want chat, messaging apps and phone in one workspace, Freshworks sells that as Freshdesk Omni at higher per-agent prices. Zoho Desk puts more channels into its core editions: social on every edition, live chat and messaging apps from Standard, and telephony integration from Professional.
Process and customization
Zoho Desk is the stronger tool for regulated or multi-step processes. Blueprints let you build drag-and-drop sequences that agents must follow, parent-child tickets split complex cases, and Enterprise adds custom modules and a sandbox. Freshdesk covers automations, ticket dispatch and SLA policies well, and Enterprise adds a sandbox and audit logs, but it is less of a build-your-own-process tool.
Reporting
Both include standard reports and dashboards. Freshdesk adds custom dashboards on Pro and Freddy AI Insights (proactive alerts with root-cause analysis, and conversational reporting) on Enterprise. Zoho Desk includes custom reports and dashboards from Standard.
Ecosystem
Each fits best inside its own suite. Zoho Desk connects naturally to Zoho CRM and the wider Zoho apps, and Zoho sells a bundled Zoho Service Plus suite. Freshdesk sits next to Freshchat, Freshsales and other Freshworks products, and sells connector app tasks ($80 per 5,000) and MCP action packs ($15 per 1,000) for automation with outside systems.
Where is each one the better choice?
Freshdesk is better when
- Most of your volume is email and you want an AI agent replying to customers from week one.
- You want a helpdesk a new admin can set up without building processes from scratch.
- You need Enterprise controls such as audit logs, IP allowlisting and sandbox, and root-cause alerts from Freddy AI Insights.
- You already use Freshworks CRM or chat products.
Zoho Desk is better when
- Per-agent cost is the deciding factor. Its paid editions run from $7 to $40 per agent on annual billing.
- You want AI assist included rather than sold per agent.
- You run Zoho CRM or other Zoho apps and want tickets next to customer records.
- Your team follows strict multi-step procedures that Blueprints can enforce.
- You are a team of three or fewer and the free edition covers your email ticketing.
Should your team pick Freshdesk or Zoho Desk?
| Team type | Pick | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Startup or micro team (1-3 people) | Zoho Desk | Free edition for 3 users; Express at $7 when you need more |
| Email-heavy B2C team, 5-20 agents | Freshdesk | Email AI Agent and simpler setup, if the higher seat price is acceptable |
| Zoho CRM customer | Zoho Desk | Native fit with the rest of the Zoho suite |
| Freshworks CRM customer | Freshdesk | Native fit with Freshsales and Freshchat |
| Process-heavy team (claims, approvals, field work) | Zoho Desk | Blueprints, multi-department, parent-child tickets |
| Enterprise IT and security reviews | Either; test both | Freshdesk Enterprise has audit logs and IP allowlisting; Zoho Desk Enterprise adds custom modules and sandbox |
| Teams that want most conversations resolved by AI | Consider a third option | Both bill AI by session or bundle it; neither charges only for resolved work |
Run both trials side by side with the same week of real tickets. Freshdesk gives 14 days of Enterprise, and Zoho Desk gives 15 days on the edition you choose.
Is there a third option besides Freshdesk and Zoho Desk?
Yes. Aftersales is an AI customer service platform built around resolving conversations, not around seats or AI sessions. Agent resolves conversations end to end and takes actions, such as verifying a Shopify order, creating a replacement or issuing a Stripe refund, inside spend limits you set. Copilot drafts replies that cite their sources, and Inbox is the shared helpdesk for everything that needs a person.
| Aftersales | |
|---|---|
| Seat pricing | Free $0 (1 seat), Starter $24, Growth $69, Scale $109 per seat/month billed annually; monthly is 20% more |
| AI pricing | Agent $0.99 per resolution, counted once per conversation; conversations Agent can't help with are free |
| AI assist | Copilot $29 per rep/month annual ($35 monthly); every plan includes 10 Copilot and 10 translation conversations per rep per month |
| Channels | Email, web and in-app chat, WhatsApp, SMS, social DMs, Slack Connect; phone with transfers and recording on Growth and up |
| Actions | Shopify, Stripe refunds, Salesforce; other systems through the Aftersales API or webhooks |
| Languages | Agent and translation in 31 languages |
| Security | GDPR DPA, US-hosted; SSO/SAML/SCIM on Scale; HIPAA support with a signed BAA on the Enterprise plan |

If you already use Freshdesk
You do not have to migrate. Aftersales Agent can run inside Freshdesk with no seats and no migration, at $0.99 per resolution with a minimum monthly commitment. That replaces session-based billing with a charge only for conversations Agent actually resolves.
If you are leaning towards Zoho Desk
Zoho Desk will almost always be cheaper per seat than Aftersales. Aftersales makes sense when a large share of your volume is repeatable and needs an action, such as order lookups, replacements and refunds, so Agent can resolve it instead of a person. Median resolution is 71% of conversations after 90 days, and Northwind Outdoors, a DTC outdoor brand, cut cost per conversation by 41%. Results depend on your mix of conversations, so test on your own.
Aftersales is a newer platform, founded in London in 2024, so its ecosystem is smaller than Freshworks' or Zoho's. Confirm the connectors you need on a call. Compare it in more depth on our Freshdesk alternative and Zoho Desk alternative pages.
