Zoho Desk vs Zendesk: which is better?
Zoho Desk is the better buy for cost-conscious teams and companies already on Zoho apps: its paid editions run $7 to $40 per agent per month billed annually, and Zia AI is included from Professional. Zendesk is the better buy for teams that want messaging, voice, a large app marketplace and a mature AI agent product in one suite, at $19 to $115 per agent per month billed annually plus usage-based AI.
- Pick Zoho Desk if seat price matters most, you run Zoho CRM or other Zoho apps, or you need structured, multi-step processes. Blueprints, departments and custom modules give you a lot of process control for the money.
- Pick Zendesk if you want chat, messaging, telephony and a help center under one Suite plan, a very large integrations marketplace, and AI agents with included automated resolutions plus a clear per-resolution rate for more.
- Consider neither as your only answer if most of your volume is repeatable work such as order status, refunds and account changes. An AI agent that resolves and acts, like Aftersales Agent, can run inside Zendesk or replace both. See the third option.

What are the main differences between Zoho Desk and Zendesk?
The differences come down to four things: how much process control you get per dollar, how AI is packaged and billed, which channels sit in which plan, and which ecosystem you already live in.
Ticketing and process control
Both are mature ticketing systems with views, SLAs, macros and automations. Zoho Desk leans further into structured process: Blueprints turn a ticket type into a guided sequence of states and required fields, and departments split teams and data within one account. Zendesk keeps the core simpler and adds depth through triggers, skills-based routing on Suite Professional, and approval workflows and custom roles on Suite Enterprise.
AI agents and agent assist
Zendesk sells AI agents for messaging and email, includes a monthly allowance of automated resolutions per agent, and charges for more: $2.00 each pay-as-you-go, less on a committed volume. Its Copilot add-on is $50 per agent per month billed annually. Zoho Desk includes Zia in the seat price from Professional and offers Zia Agents, built in Agent Studio from scratch or from pre-built agents such as Support Specialist. Zoho does not publish a per-resolution price, which makes the AI bill cheaper to start but harder to forecast at scale.
On both, check whether the AI can actually change something in another system, such as issuing a refund or editing an order, or whether it mainly answers questions and hands off.
Channels
Zendesk's Suite Team plan already includes messaging, live chat, telephony and a help center. On Zoho Desk, channels arrive tier by tier: WhatsApp and other instant messaging from Standard, telephony integrations from Professional, and Zoho SalesIQ live chat on Enterprise. If chat and voice matter on day one, compare Zoho Enterprise ($40) with Zendesk Suite Team ($55), not Zoho Express with Zendesk Support Team.
Ecosystem
Zoho Desk fits naturally next to Zoho CRM, SalesIQ and Zoho Analytics. Zendesk has one of the largest helpdesk app marketplaces and is often the default that other support tools integrate with first. Your existing CRM is usually the deciding factor.
Security and compliance
Zendesk lists HIPAA enablement (with a BAA) on Suite Professional and data center location as an add-on. Zoho publishes its own compliance documentation; confirm the specific certifications and data residency you need with Zoho before you buy.
Is Zoho Desk or Zendesk cheaper?
Zoho Desk is cheaper on seats at every tier: its most expensive published edition ($40 per agent per month annual) costs less than Zendesk's Suite Team ($55). The gap narrows only if you compare AI usage, where Zendesk publishes a rate and Zoho does not.
- Zoho Desk (annual / monthly per agent): Free for up to 3 users; Express $7 / $9 (up to 5 users); Standard $14 / $20; Professional $23 / $35; Enterprise $40 / $50. Light agents are an extra paid seat type, and Enterprise includes 50 free.
- Zendesk (annual / monthly per agent): Support Team $19 / $25; Suite Team $55 / $69; Suite Professional $115 / $149; Suite Enterprise via sales. Copilot $50, Workforce Engagement $50 and Contact Center $83 per agent per month annual are add-ons.
Worked example: 10 agents and 1,000 AI resolutions a month
Assumptions: 10 agents, annual billing, list prices only, and the AI resolves 1,000 conversations a month. Zendesk overage uses the published pay-as-you-go rate; a committed volume would lower it. Aftersales is shown on Growth with the same 10 seats.
| Plan | Seats per month | AI usage per month |
|---|---|---|
| Zoho Desk Professional | $230 | AI usage not itemized; confirm with Zoho |
| Zoho Desk Enterprise | $400 | Adds SalesIQ live chat; AI usage not itemized |
| Zendesk Suite Team | $550 | 50 automated resolutions included; 950 more at $2.00 PAYG = $1,900 |
| Zendesk Suite Professional | $1,150 | 100 automated resolutions included; 900 more at $2.00 PAYG = $1,800 |
| Aftersales Growth | $690 | 1,000 Agent resolutions at $0.99 = $990 |

If AI volume is low, Zoho Desk is clearly cheapest. As AI volume grows, the per-resolution rate starts to matter as much as the seat price, so ask Zoho for its AI usage terms before you compare totals. Full breakdowns: Zendesk pricing and Aftersales pricing.
Should your team pick Zoho Desk or Zendesk?
Choose by team type and by what already runs your business.
- Small team on a tight budget: Zoho Desk. The free edition covers 3 users, and Express or Standard gives a working email, social and messaging helpdesk for well under $20 per agent.
- Company already on Zoho CRM: Zoho Desk, for shared customer records and one vendor relationship.
- Process-heavy support (claims, approvals, multi-step cases): Zoho Desk Professional or Enterprise, for Blueprints and departments.
- Chat-first or voice-heavy team: Zendesk Suite, which bundles messaging, live chat and telephony from Suite Team.
- Multi-brand or regulated mid-market team: Zendesk Suite Professional, for up to 5 brands, SLAs and HIPAA enablement.
- Team that needs many third-party integrations: Zendesk, for the size of its marketplace.
- Ecommerce or SaaS team where most tickets are repeatable requests: look at the third option below. Neither helpdesk's price is the main cost driver once most conversations can be resolved automatically.

Is there a third option besides Zoho Desk and Zendesk?
Yes. Aftersales is an AI customer service platform where an AI Agent resolves conversations end to end and takes actions, billed at $0.99 per resolution, counted once per conversation. Conversations Agent can't help with are free. You can use it two ways.
1. Keep Zendesk and add Agent
Agent on its own runs inside Zendesk, Salesforce Service Cloud or Freshdesk with no seats and no migration, at $0.99 per resolution with a minimum monthly commitment. Your team keeps its views, macros and reports. Agent takes the repeatable share and hands off to a person with the conversation, the data it looked up and what it already tried attached. Agent on its own is offered for those three helpdesks, so Zoho Desk teams would use the full platform below.
2. Replace the helpdesk
- Agent: describe a procedure in plain language or import an existing macro, and Agent turns it into steps. It can look up and verify Shopify orders, create replacements, issue Stripe refunds and work with Salesforce, within spend limits and escalation rules triggered by sentiment, keywords, customer tier or legal language. 31 languages.
- Inbox: one queue for email, web and in-app chat, WhatsApp, SMS, phone, social DMs and Slack Connect, with views, SLAs and side conversations into Slack. Phone with transfers and recording is on Growth and up.
- Copilot: drafts replies that cite their sources, summaries and translation, $29 per rep per month annual.
- Insights: real-time issue detection, Monitors that score every conversation, forecasting and cost per conversation.
| Zoho Desk | Zendesk | Aftersales | |

Results to set expectations: the median Aftersales customer has 71% of conversations resolved by Agent after 90 days, and Northwind Outdoors cut cost per conversation by 41%. Read more in customer stories and the resolution rate guide.
Where Zoho Desk or Zendesk is still the better pick: if your tickets are mostly complex, judgment-heavy cases that need a person, a low seat price (Zoho) or a broad suite and marketplace (Zendesk) will matter more than per-resolution AI. Aftersales is newer (founded in London in 2024), so confirm niche integrations on a call.
