Front vs Zendesk: shared inbox or ticketing helpdesk?

Front is a collaborative shared inbox; Zendesk is a ticketing helpdesk. We compared plans, AI and Zendesk pricing against Front's, and added Aftersales Agent as a third option. More comparisons on the blog.

Front vs Zendesk: which is better?

Pick Front if your team works out of shared email and collaborates across support, sales and operations. Pick Zendesk if you run a high-volume, multi-channel support desk that needs ticketing depth, native voice and messaging, and a mature AI agent.

Front feels like a team email client with ticketing added: conversations stay threaded like email, teammates comment inside them, and account managers can work the same inbox as support. Zendesk is a ticketing system first, built around queues, SLAs, routing and a large app marketplace.

On price, Front's Professional plan ($65 per seat a month billed annually) is cheaper than Zendesk Suite Professional ($115). Zendesk's Suite Team ($55) undercuts Front Professional, though, and Zendesk includes some AI agent resolutions in every plan. Front sells its AI features as add-ons below Enterprise.

Neither is a bad choice. The better question is how your team works today and how much of your volume you want AI to resolve. If AI resolution is the priority, read the third option below.

What are the main differences between Front and Zendesk?

The biggest difference is the working model. Front is built for collaboration on conversations; Zendesk is built for processing tickets at scale.

Inbox and collaboration

Front keeps conversations in an email-style view with shared inboxes, internal comments and assignment. Teams outside support, such as sales or logistics, can use it without learning a helpdesk. Zendesk organises work as tickets in views and queues, with omnichannel routing on Suite plans and skills-based routing on Suite Professional. It suits teams where every request needs an owner, a status and an SLA.

Channels

Front Starter covers one channel type (email, Front Chat or SMS). Professional adds omnichannel support, including social and WhatsApp; native WhatsApp is billed at Meta's cost plus a 20% admin fee. Voice runs through integrations. Zendesk Support Team is email only, while Suite Team and above include messaging, chat, voice and social in one workspace.

AI

Zendesk includes AI agents in every Suite and Support plan and bills per automated resolution. It says its AI agents work across messaging, email and voice in 80 languages. Front's Autopilot handles conversations across email, chat and Slack using playbooks that define what data to collect, which actions to take and when to involve a person. Front lists Autopilot from $0.05 per conversation and asks you to talk to sales for a quote.

Automation and rules

Front caps automation rules on lower plans: up to 10 on Starter and 20 on Professional, with unlimited rules and macros on Enterprise. Zendesk's triggers, automations and SLA policies are core to its Suite plans.

Knowledge base

Front includes a public knowledge base from Starter, with a multi-language knowledge base on Enterprise. Zendesk includes a help center on Suite plans, supports up to five help centers for multiple brands on Suite Professional and offers help center content in 40+ languages.

Ecosystem

Zendesk has one of the largest helpdesk app marketplaces. Front focuses on integrations that bring CRM and order data into the conversation. If you rely on a niche app, check each vendor's marketplace before you commit.

Is Front or Zendesk cheaper?

At list prices, Front Professional ($65) costs less than Zendesk Suite Professional ($115), but Zendesk Suite Team ($55) costs less than Front Professional. Zendesk also lists monthly billing ($25, $69 and $149 for its three listed tiers); Front's pricing page shows annual prices and says annual billing saves 24%.

Worked example: 10 agents, 2,000 conversations a month

Assumptions: 10 agents on each vendor's upper-mid plan, annual billing, AI reply drafting for every agent, and AI resolving 1,000 of 2,000 monthly conversations. List prices only.

  • Front Professional: 10 x $65 = $650, plus Copilot 10 x $20 = $200. $850 a month before Autopilot, which Front quotes from $0.05 per conversation.
  • Zendesk Suite Professional: 10 x $115 = $1,150, plus Copilot 10 x $50 = $500. 100 resolutions are included (10 per agent); the other 900 at $2.00 pay-as-you-go add $1,800. About $3,450 a month, less with a committed resolution volume.

On these assumptions Front is clearly cheaper, especially if Autopilot is quoted near its starting rate. Zendesk's bill depends heavily on how many resolutions you commit to in advance. For the full breakdown, see our Zendesk pricing guide.

Should your team pick Front or Zendesk?

Match the tool to how work flows through your team, not to the feature list.

  • B2B account teams and agencies: Front. Shared email, internal comments and multi-team access fit account-based work where the same customer talks to support, sales and finance.
  • Logistics and operations teams living in email: Front, especially if partners and suppliers write in from many addresses.
  • Consumer support at volume: Zendesk. Queues, SLAs, omnichannel routing and native voice handle thousands of tickets a day.
  • Multi-brand companies: Zendesk Suite Professional, with up to five help centers.
  • Teams that need a large app ecosystem: Zendesk.
  • Small teams on a budget: Zendesk Support Team at $19 if email ticketing is enough; Front Starter at $25 if you want a shared inbox for up to 10 people.

Where each one is the wrong fit

Front is a weaker choice if you need native phone support, more than 50 seats below Enterprise, or more than 20 automation rules without upgrading. Zendesk is a weaker choice if non-support colleagues need to work customer email with you, or if you want a predictable bill while AI resolution volume grows.

Is there a third option?

Yes. If the main reason you are comparing Front and Zendesk is to resolve more conversations with AI, consider Aftersales. It is an AI customer service platform with an AI Agent that resolves conversations end to end and takes actions, plus a shared Inbox for the conversations people handle.

Agent costs $0.99 per resolution on every plan, counted once per conversation however many questions it contained. Conversations Agent can't help with are free. Agent can look up and verify Shopify orders, create replacements, issue Stripe refunds and work with Salesforce, within spend limits and escalation rules you set.

Aftersales plans are Free ($0), Starter $24, Growth $69 and Scale $109 per seat a month billed annually, with a 14-day free trial. In the worked example above, Growth costs 10 x $69 = $690 for seats, plus 1,000 resolutions x $0.99 = $990, plus Copilot at 10 x $29 = $290: $1,970 a month. That is more than Front before Autopilot and less than Zendesk at pay-as-you-go rates.

Already on Zendesk? Agent on its own runs inside Zendesk, Salesforce Service Cloud or Freshdesk with no seats and no migration, at $0.99 per resolution with a minimum monthly commitment.

Test it on your own conversations. Start a 14-day free trial and measure what Agent resolves before you choose a helpdesk.

Front is still the better pick for cross-team email collaboration, and Zendesk for very large ticketing operations with heavy marketplace needs. See our Front alternative and Zendesk alternative pages for direct comparisons, or Aftersales pricing for every plan.

How did we compare Front and Zendesk?

We read each vendor's own pricing and product pages in October 2026 and used list prices with annual billing. We did not use reviews or third-party price lists. Where a vendor asks you to talk to sales, such as Front Autopilot volume pricing or Zendesk Suite Enterprise, we say so instead of estimating.
