Zendesk vs Salesforce Service Cloud: which is better?
Zendesk is the better pick for most support teams that want a fast, affordable helpdesk. Salesforce Service Cloud is the better pick when service has to live inside the same CRM as sales, contracts and field operations.
Zendesk starts at $19 per agent per month (Support Team, billed annually) and its Suite plans run $55 and $115. A small team can be live in days, and the marketplace lists more than 1,800 apps and integrations. Salesforce's service editions start at $195 per user per month (Core, billed annually) and rise to $395 and $550. You pay more and need more setup, but every case sits on the same customer record your sales and account teams use, and you can customize almost anything.
On AI, both have moved to usage pricing. Zendesk includes AI agents on Suite plans with 5 or 10 automated resolutions per agent per month, then charges $2.00 per pay-as-you-go resolution. Salesforce sells Agentforce by the conversation ($2), by Flex Credits ($500 per 100,000) or per user ($125 add-on), and bundles it into its $550 Max edition.
If you mainly want AI to resolve more conversations and do not want to change helpdesk, there is a third option further down.

What are the main differences between Zendesk and Salesforce Service Cloud?
The biggest difference is what each product is built around. Zendesk is built around the ticket. Salesforce is built around the customer record in a CRM.
Helpdesk vs CRM
Zendesk is a dedicated service platform. Tickets, views, triggers, macros and SLAs work out of the box, and a support lead can usually change them without a developer. Salesforce Service Cloud is a set of service features on the Salesforce platform. Cases link to accounts, contacts, orders, service contracts and entitlements, which is powerful if those objects already live in Salesforce and heavy if they do not.
Setup and admin
Zendesk is designed for admins without engineering help. Salesforce usually needs a Salesforce admin or an implementation partner, especially for routing, entitlements and custom objects. That work pays off when your processes are complex, and costs time and money when they are not.
AI agents
Zendesk includes AI agents for messaging and email on its Suite plans and bills per automated resolution, meaning a request the AI resolved without escalating to a human. Salesforce's Agentforce for Service is billed by conversation, by action through Flex Credits, or included in the Max edition. Advanced also offers Casey, the Help Agent, with outcome-based pricing listed at $2 per resolution. The practical difference is that a Zendesk escalation is not billed as a resolution, while Agentforce conversation or action pricing can charge for AI work even when a person finishes the job. Model both against your own volumes.
AI for human reps
Zendesk sells Copilot at $50 per agent per month on annual billing; Suite Professional also includes AI writing tools and quick reports. Salesforce sells an Agentforce add-on at $125 per user per month for unmetered employee use, and includes the Service Rep assistant in Max.
Channels and voice
Zendesk Suite Team adds messaging, live chat and telephony to email, and Suite Professional adds an IVR phone menu. On Salesforce, Core covers web and email case capture, while digital channels and Partner Contact Center are bought separately until you reach Max, which includes web chat.
Ecosystem
Both have large ecosystems. Zendesk's marketplace lists 1,800+ apps. Salesforce has AgentExchange plus Flow, Data 360 and the rest of its platform, which matters most if sales, marketing or field service already run on Salesforce.
Is Zendesk or Salesforce Service Cloud cheaper?
Zendesk is cheaper per seat at every comparable tier. Salesforce can narrow the gap only when you would buy its CRM anyway or when its Max bundle replaces several add-ons.
| Plan | Price (annual billing) | What stands out |
|---|---|---|
| Zendesk Support Team | $19/agent/mo ($25 monthly) | Email ticketing, routing, macros, triggers, prebuilt dashboards |
| Zendesk Suite Team | $55/agent/mo ($69 monthly) | AI agents, messaging and live chat, telephony, omnichannel routing; 5 automated resolutions per agent/mo |
| Zendesk Suite Professional | $115/agent/mo ($149 monthly) | Skills-based routing, IVR, AI writing tools; 10 automated resolutions per agent/mo |
| Zendesk Suite Enterprise + Copilot | Custom | Sandbox, approval workflows, custom agent roles, Copilot |
| Salesforce Core | $195/user/mo | Case management, Service Console, Omni-Channel Routing, knowledge, help center |
| Salesforce Advanced | $395/user/mo | Casey, the Help Agent, full sandbox, Premier Success Plan, Backup & Recover |
| Salesforce Max | $550/user/mo | Agentforce for Service, digital channels, Partner Contact Center, workforce and quality management, 2.75M Flex Credits per org per year |

AI costs on top of seats
- Zendesk: automated resolutions beyond the plan allowance are $2.00 each pay-as-you-go. Committed volumes are priced lower; get the rate from sales. Copilot is $50 per agent per month annual.
- Salesforce: Agentforce is $2 per conversation, or Flex Credits at $500 per 100,000. An Agentforce action uses 20 credits (30 for voice), so each action costs about $0.10. The employee add-on is $125 per user per month.
Worked example: 10 reps, 5,000 conversations a month
Assumptions: 10 human reps, annual billing, list prices, 5,000 conversations a month. The AI handles 3,000 of them and fully resolves 2,000; the other 1,000 escalate to a person. Pay-as-you-go AI pricing. Taxes, telephony minutes and implementation are excluded.
| Setup | Seats | AI | Monthly total |
|---|---|---|---|
| Zendesk Suite Professional + Copilot | 10 × $115 = $1,150; Copilot 10 × $50 = $500 | 1,900 resolutions over the 100 included × $2.00 = $3,800 | $5,450 |
| Salesforce Core + Agentforce conversations | 10 × $195 = $1,950 | 3,000 conversations × $2 = $6,000 | $7,950 (add $1,250 for the rep add-on) |
| Salesforce Max | 10 × $550 = $5,500 | Drawn from 2.75M Flex Credits a year (about 137,500 actions) | $5,500 if usage fits the pool |
Illustrative only. Salesforce conversation billing is shown as charged on every conversation the agent handles; confirm how your contract counts conversations and actions.
On these assumptions Zendesk is cheaper unless you need what Max bundles. For more detail, see our Zendesk pricing breakdown.
Should your team pick Zendesk or Salesforce Service Cloud?
Pick by where your customer data lives and how much admin capacity you have.
- Small and mid-size support teams: Zendesk. Lower seat prices, a 14-day trial and admin a support lead can own.
- Ecommerce and DTC brands: usually Zendesk, or a commerce-focused helpdesk. See the best ecommerce helpdesks.
- B2B and SaaS companies already on Salesforce: Service Cloud, if cases need to sit beside accounts, opportunities, contracts and entitlements. Zendesk with a Salesforce integration is the lighter alternative.
- Field service, manufacturing and regulated enterprises: Salesforce, if you need custom objects, complex entitlements and one platform governed by a central admin team.
- Contact centers: both can work. Zendesk sells a Contact Center add-on at $83 per agent per month annual; Salesforce bundles Partner Contact Center and workforce and quality management in Max.
- Teams without a Salesforce admin: Zendesk. Service Cloud without in-house admin skills tends to stall.
Where each one is clearly better
Zendesk is better on price, time to value and day-to-day admin. Salesforce is better on data model depth, customization and one view of the customer across departments. Neither is a weak product; they solve different problems.
Is there a third option to Zendesk and Salesforce Service Cloud?
Yes. If your real goal is to resolve more conversations with AI, Aftersales is a third option, and you can use it with or without leaving your current helpdesk.
- Keep Zendesk or Salesforce. Agent on its own runs inside Zendesk, Salesforce Service Cloud or Freshdesk with no seats and no migration, at $0.99 per resolution with a minimum monthly commitment.
- Pay only for resolutions. $0.99 per resolution on every plan, counted once per conversation however many questions it contained. Conversations Agent can't help with are free.
- Procedures in plain language. Describe a procedure or import an existing macro and Agent turns it into steps. Each step maps to a connector or API with explicit, revocable permissions, with spend limits and escalation on sentiment, keywords, customer tier or legal language.
- Actions built in. Shopify order lookup, verification and replacements, Stripe refunds and Salesforce; other systems connect through the Aftersales API or webhooks.
- Or replace the helpdesk. Inbox covers email, chat, WhatsApp, SMS, phone, social and Slack Connect. Free plan, then Starter $24, Growth $69 and Scale $109 per seat per month billed annually. Copilot is $29 per rep per month and drafts replies that cite their sources.
- Quality on every conversation. Insights runs Monitors across all conversations and reports cost per conversation in one unit.
Agent reaches a median 71% resolution after 90 days, and Northwind Outdoors cut cost per conversation by 41%. Security covers a GDPR DPA, US hosting, and HIPAA support with a signed BAA on the Enterprise plan.
Same example, on Aftersales. Assumptions as above: 10 reps, 5,000 conversations, Agent resolves 2,000, list prices, annual billing. Agent: 2,000 × $0.99 = $1,980. Growth seats: 10 × $69 = $690. Copilot: 10 × $29 = $290. Total $2,960 a month. The 1,000 escalated conversations cost nothing on the Agent side. Running Agent on its own inside Zendesk or Salesforce would be $1,980 plus your existing helpdesk bill, subject to the minimum commitment.
When Aftersales is not the right fit: if you need Salesforce's custom objects, field service or one CRM governed across departments, stay on Service Cloud and consider Agent inside it. If you rely on niche Zendesk marketplace apps, confirm specific connectors on a call before switching.
Test it on your own conversations. Start a 14-day free trial, or see pricing for Agent inside your current helpdesk.
