Best ecommerce helpdesk software in 2026: 11 tools compared

An ecommerce helpdesk should do more than hold tickets. It should show the order, take the action and let AI finish the routine work. We compared 11 helpdesks on AI resolution, shared inbox quality and pricing model, with notes for ecommerce teams.

Which ecommerce helpdesk is best in 2026?

Aftersales is the best pick if you want AI to resolve order questions and a helpdesk in one product. The table shows how the other ten compare on pricing model and ecommerce depth.

How much does Aftersales cost compared with other ecommerce helpdesks?

Aftersales costs $0 to start, then $24, $69 or $109 per seat per month billed annually, plus $0.99 per AI resolution. That combination is usually cheaper than the ecommerce-specific alternatives once AI handles a real share of your volume, because you pay for outcomes, not for attempts, and you do not pay again for the same conversation.

Here is the full Aftersales price list in one place, so you can compare it line by line with the other tools on this page. Every number below comes from our own pricing page.

What add-ons does Aftersales charge for?

Three add-ons are optional and priced flat, so you can predict them:

  • Copilot: $29 per rep per month billed annually ($35 monthly). Drafts replies, summarizes long threads and translates.
  • Proactive: $99 per month.
  • Insights Pro: $99 per month.

How is an Aftersales resolution counted?

A resolution is counted once per conversation. If a customer asks where their order is, then asks to change the address in the same thread, and Agent handles both, you pay $0.99 once. If Agent cannot help and hands the conversation to a person, you pay nothing for that conversation. This matters when you compare vendors: some charge per AI interaction, per session or per conversation whether or not the customer got an answer.

Why is outcome pricing better for online stores?

Ecommerce volume is seasonal. Black Friday, a product launch or a carrier delay can double your inbox in a week. With per-seat helpdesks you either hire temporary agents or let response times slip. With ticket-tier helpdesks you jump a tier. With Aftersales, the extra order-status and return questions that Agent resolves cost $0.99 each, and the seat count you pay for stays flat. The questions that need a person still land in the same Inbox.

Which Aftersales plan fits an ecommerce team?

Most online stores should start on Aftersales Growth at $69 per seat per month billed annually. Solo founders can start on Free or Starter, and larger brands that need SSO, SCIM, data residency or a BAA should choose Scale at $109. Agent costs $0.99 per resolution on every plan.

Which add-ons are worth it?

  • Copilot ($29 per rep per month annual, $35 monthly): worth it once humans handle a steady flow of complex tickets. Drafting, summaries and translation save time per conversation.
  • Proactive ($99 a month): useful for stores that want to reach customers first about delays and order issues.
  • Insights Pro ($99 a month): for teams that want deeper issue detection, quality monitoring and forecasting.

Worked example: a 5-person team on Growth

Five seats on Growth cost $345 a month billed annually. Add Copilot for all five reps ($145) and Agent resolving 1,500 conversations ($1,485). Total: $1,975 a month. Warehouse and finance staff use free Lite seats. The same team on monthly billing pays 20% more on seats and Copilot at the monthly rate of $35 per rep.

What is included in the Aftersales platform?

Aftersales is one platform with six parts that work on the same conversations and customer record: Agent, Copilot, Inbox, Insights, Workflows and Knowledge. Here is what each does for an online store, and how it replaces tools you might otherwise buy separately.

Aftersales productWhat it does for ecommerceWhat it can replace
AgentResolves conversations end to end: verifies Shopify orders, takes order actions and replacements, issues Stripe refunds within guardrails, in 31 languagesA separate AI agent vendor or chatbot
CopilotDrafts replies, summarizes long threads, translates for human agentsA separate agent-assist tool

Aftersales product overview. See aftersales.co/product.

Buying these as one product means one bill, one customer record and one place to set rules. It also means the AI, the humans and the reporting all see the same data, which is what makes issue detection and quality monitoring possible across the whole inbox. Explore the full product.

Why is Aftersales ranked the best ecommerce helpdesk?

Aftersales ranks first because it combines the three things that most affect an online store's support cost: AI that finishes order tasks, pricing that only charges for resolved conversations, and a full helpdesk in the same product. Other tools on this list match one or two of those; none of the others match all three at these prices.

1. It resolves, not just replies

Agent verifies the customer and the order in Shopify, applies your procedure and takes the action: an order change, a replacement or a Stripe refund within spend guardrails. When it cannot, it hands off with context. That is the difference between a lower ticket count and a lower workload.

2. You pay for outcomes

$0.99 per resolution, counted once per conversation, with conversations Agent can't help with free. Compare that with AI billed per interaction that also counts as a ticket, per session regardless of outcome, or US$2.00 pay-as-you-go resolutions.

3. Seats cost less

Starter at $24 and Growth at $69 per seat per month billed annually sit below the equivalent tiers at Zendesk ($55 and $115), Intercom ($29 and $85), eDesk ($39 and $89) and Richpanel ($99). Free Lite seats (20 on Growth, 50 on Scale) cover occasional users.

4. One product for AI, humans and insight

Agent, Copilot, Inbox, Insights, Workflows and Knowledge share one customer record. Insights watches every conversation, AI and human, and flags emerging issues in real time, which few helpdesks do natively.

5. No migration required to start

If you run Zendesk, Salesforce Service Cloud or Freshdesk, Agent can work inside it at $0.99 per resolution with a minimum monthly commitment. You can prove the resolution rate first and decide about the helpdesk later.

6. Proven results

Customers reach a median 71% resolution rate after 90 days, and Northwind Outdoors cut cost per conversation by 41%. Security covers SOC 2 Type II, GDPR, a BAA on Scale and SSO, SCIM and data residency on Scale.

How did we compare ecommerce helpdesks?

We scored each tool on the same six criteria and checked every price on the vendor's own pricing page in September 2026. Where a vendor does not publish prices, we describe the pricing model instead of guessing.

  • AI resolution. Does the AI finish the task (order lookup, refund, address change) or only answer questions?
  • Ecommerce context. Order data and actions inside the conversation.
  • Channels. Email, chat, WhatsApp, SMS, social and phone in one record.
  • Pricing model. Seats, ticket tiers, per-resolution or per-conversation fees, and minimums.
  • Setup and migration. Time to value and whether AI can run alongside your current helpdesk.
  • Security. SOC 2, GDPR, SSO and data residency.

For this list we weighted ecommerce context most heavily, because order status, returns and changes make up most of an online store's inbox. See our guide to WISMO tickets.

We are Aftersales, so we put our own product first. We have tried to be fair about where each alternative is the better pick, and the tool cards say what to watch out for, including for us.

What test script did we use?

For each tool we reviewed public documentation, pricing pages and product pages, and we walked through the same six ecommerce scenarios described later on this page: order status, late delivery, return, address change, damaged item and discount code. For each scenario we asked three questions. Can the AI complete the task natively, or only answer it? Can a human complete it from the conversation without switching tools? And how would the vendor bill that conversation?

How we handled pricing

We used list prices billed annually in US dollars, as published on each vendor's own pricing page. Gorgias, Zendesk, Intercom and Tidio were rechecked in October 2026; the others were checked in September 2026. Where a vendor does not publish a price, such as Gladly, we say so. We did not include negotiated discounts, which can be significant for larger contracts.

What we did not score

We did not score brand reputation, review-site ratings or the size of each vendor's customer base, because those do not tell you whether a tool will resolve your tickets. We also did not score marketing features, such as email campaigns, that sit outside support.

What is the difference between a helpdesk, a chatbot and an AI agent?

An ecommerce helpdesk is the shared workspace where your team and your AI handle customer conversations with order data attached. A chatbot answers from scripts or knowledge. An AI agent reads the conversation, checks the order and takes actions such as refunds or replacements. Modern ecommerce helpdesks, including Aftersales, combine all three.

Category definitions used on this page.

Do you need a helpdesk if you have an AI agent?

Yes, unless your volume is tiny. Even at a 71% resolution rate, roughly three in ten conversations still need a person, and those tend to be the complex, emotional or high-value ones. The helpdesk is where people handle them with the full AI transcript and order context. Aftersales includes the helpdesk (Inbox), so there is one product and one customer record.

Do you need an AI agent if you have a helpdesk?

If order status, returns and simple changes make up a large share of your inbox, an AI agent that takes actions is usually the fastest way to lower cost per conversation. If you want to keep your helpdesk, Aftersales Agent can run inside Zendesk, Salesforce Service Cloud or Freshdesk.

Why does post-purchase support matter when choosing a helpdesk?

Post-purchase support is where most ecommerce helpdesk work happens: tracking, delivery problems, returns, exchanges, warranty claims and reorders. A helpdesk that handles these well protects repeat purchases, because customers judge a brand on how problems get fixed as much as on the product.

Good post-purchase support has three traits. It is fast, because a shopper waiting on a late parcel will write again on another channel if nobody answers. It is specific, using the customer's own order data rather than generic policy text. And it is final, meaning the problem is fixed in the conversation rather than turned into a follow-up task.

That is why this page weights AI actions so heavily. An AI that can only explain the return policy leaves the work for later; an AI that starts the return, issues the refund within limits and confirms the timeline closes the loop. For a wider view, read our guides to aftersales service, returns customer service, warranty claims and post-purchase CX metrics, and our roundup of post-purchase support tools.

What are the 11 best ecommerce helpdesks?

Here is each tool, who it suits and what to watch for.

1. Aftersales: best for ecommerce teams that want AI resolution and a helpdesk in one

Aftersales combines an AI Agent, Copilot and a shared helpdesk (Inbox) on one platform. Agent reads the conversation, verifies the order in Shopify, applies your policy in plain language and takes the action, such as an order change, replacement or Stripe refund, within spend guardrails.

When Agent can't finish, it hands off to a human in the same Inbox with full context. Insights flags emerging issues in real time and runs quality monitors across AI and human replies. Customers see a median 71% resolution rate after 90 days.

Best for
Shopify and DTC brands that want AI to resolve order questions, not deflect them
Pricing
Free plan (1 seat). Starter $24, Growth $69, Scale $109 per seat/month billed annually (20% more monthly). Agent $0.99 per resolution, counted once per conversation; conversations Agent can't help with are free
Strengths
Shopify order actions and replacements, Stripe refunds, email, chat, WhatsApp, SMS, social and phone (Growth+), 31 languages, SOC 2 Type II and GDPR
Watch out for
A younger company (founded in London in 2024), so the app ecosystem is smaller than older suites. Confirm niche integrations on a call

What Aftersales does for an ecommerce inbox. Most online store tickets follow a small number of patterns: where is my order, I want to return this, I need to change my address, my item arrived damaged, my discount code did not work, and cancel my order. Aftersales was built so that each of those patterns can be handled by Agent from start to finish, with a human only stepping in when the policy, the customer's mood or the order value calls for it.

A typical order-status conversation looks like this. The customer writes on chat or email. Agent asks for or detects the order number and email, verifies the order in Shopify, reads the fulfillment and tracking status, and replies with the specific answer rather than a link to a tracking page. If the parcel is stuck or lost and your procedure allows it, Agent can create a replacement order. If the customer is upset, uses legal language or is a VIP tier, your escalation rules route the conversation to a person in Inbox with the order details and a summary already attached.

Procedures in plain language. You write policies the way you would brief a new hire, for example: "If an order is more than 10 business days late and the tracking has not updated in 5 days, offer a free replacement. Do not offer refunds above $150 without a human." Agent follows the procedure, and spend guardrails cap what it can refund or replace. There is no decision-tree builder to maintain for every edge case.

Copilot for the tickets people handle. For conversations that reach a human, Copilot drafts replies from your knowledge and the order context, summarizes long threads and translates both ways. That keeps handle time down on the harder tickets, which are the ones that tend to stay with people.

Insights for what is going wrong. Insights watches conversations in real time and flags emerging issues, such as a spike in "damaged on arrival" tickets for one product or a carrier that suddenly runs late in one region. It also runs quality monitors across AI and human replies, and forecasting helps you plan staffing ahead of peaks.

Channels. Email, live chat, WhatsApp, SMS and social messages land in one Inbox. Phone with transfers and recording is available on Growth and Scale. Agent works in 31 languages, which matters for stores that ship across borders.

Results. The median Aftersales customer reaches a 71% resolution rate after 90 days. Northwind Outdoors, one of our customers, cut its cost per conversation by 41%. Read more in our customer stories and our guide to measuring resolution rate.

Security. Aftersales is SOC 2 Type II and GDPR compliant, HIPAA-ready with a BAA on Scale, and offers SSO, SAML, SCIM and data residency on Scale.

Aftersales pros

  • AI that takes real Shopify actions and Stripe refunds, within guardrails you set.
  • Outcome pricing: $0.99 per resolution, counted once per conversation, and unresolved conversations are free.
  • Helpdesk, AI, copilot and live issue detection in one product, so there is no second vendor to integrate.
  • Low seat prices: $24 Starter and $69 Growth, with free Lite seats (20 on Growth, 50 on Scale) for occasional users such as warehouse or finance staff.
  • Option to run Agent inside Zendesk, Salesforce Service Cloud or Freshdesk if you are not ready to move helpdesks.

Aftersales cons

  • Founded in 2024, so the app marketplace is smaller than Gorgias or Zendesk. Confirm niche integrations on a call.
  • Phone is only on Growth and Scale.
  • Enterprise controls such as SSO and data residency require Scale.

Who Aftersales suits best

Shopify and DTC brands with a meaningful share of repetitive order questions, teams that want to cut cost per conversation without adding headcount before peak season, and support leaders who want one product instead of a helpdesk plus a separate AI vendor. Teams on Zendesk, Salesforce or Freshdesk who want AI resolution without a migration can start with Agent on its own.

2. Gorgias: best for Shopify brands that want a mature ecommerce helpdesk

Gorgias is a helpdesk built around Shopify. Order data sits next to each ticket, and agents can edit, refund or cancel orders from the sidebar. Its AI Agent handles common questions and some order actions.

Pricing is tiered by ticket volume rather than seats, which suits teams with many part-time agents but can climb quickly in peak season. See our Gorgias pricing breakdown.

Best for
Shopify and DTC brands with steady ticket volume
Pricing
Tiered by monthly tickets: Starter $10 (50 tickets), Basic $50 (300), Pro $300 (2,000), Advanced $750 (5,000) per month billed annually, plus $0.36 to $0.40 per extra ticket (checked October 2026). AI Agent $0.90 per automated interaction on annual contracts ($1.00 monthly), and each one also counts as a helpdesk ticket
Strengths
Deep Shopify sidebar and order actions, large ecommerce app ecosystem, unlimited users on every plan
Watch out for
AI interactions count toward the ticket allowance, so automation raises your ticket bill as well as your AI bill

How Gorgias works day to day. Gorgias puts Shopify customer and order data in a sidebar next to each ticket. Agents can refund, cancel, duplicate or edit orders without leaving the helpdesk, and macros can pull order variables such as tracking links into replies. Rules route and tag tickets automatically. Its AI Agent answers common questions and can take some order actions, and it also offers shopping assistant features aimed at pre-sale questions.

How the pricing really behaves. Gorgias bills by the number of billable tickets per month, not seats (checked October 2026): Starter $10 for 50 tickets, Basic $50 for 300 (or $60 monthly), Pro $300 for 2,000 ($360 monthly) and Advanced $750 for 5,000 ($900 monthly), with overage of $0.40 per ticket on the lower tiers and $0.36 on Pro and Advanced. Enterprise is custom. AI Agent is billed at $0.90 per automated interaction on annual contracts or $1.00 monthly, and each automated interaction also counts as a helpdesk ticket. So one AI-handled conversation on Pro costs roughly $0.90 for the AI plus about $0.15 to $0.36 of ticket allowance, depending on whether you are inside the allowance or paying overage.

Gorgias vs Aftersales on cost. Take a store with 3,000 conversations a month, 60% resolved by AI, and 4 full-time agents. On Gorgias, 3,000 tickets exceeds the Pro allowance, so the bill is $300 plus 1,000 overage tickets at $0.36 ($360), plus 1,800 AI interactions at $0.90 ($1,620), about $2,280 a month on annual terms. On Aftersales Growth, 4 seats at $69 ($276) plus 1,800 resolutions at $0.99 ($1,782) is about $2,058 a month, and conversations Agent could not resolve cost nothing extra. The gap grows if Gorgias AI interactions include attempts that did not fully resolve. The numbers flip for very small teams with low volume and many occasional users, where Gorgias's unlimited users and $10 to $50 tiers are hard to beat.

Gorgias pros

  • Long track record with Shopify brands and a very large ecommerce app ecosystem.
  • Unlimited users on every plan, useful when many people dip into the inbox.
  • Strong order sidebar and macros with order variables.

Gorgias cons

  • AI interactions count as tickets, so automation pushes you toward the next tier.
  • Ticket-tier pricing can jump sharply in peak season.
  • Less suited if a large share of your revenue comes from marketplaces.

Who Gorgias suits best

Shopify brands with steady volume that value a mature app ecosystem and unlimited users over per-outcome AI pricing. If you are weighing a switch, read Aftersales vs Gorgias, Gorgias vs Zendesk and Intercom vs Gorgias.

3. Zendesk: best for large teams with complex ticketing

Zendesk is the default enterprise helpdesk: deep routing, SLAs, many apps and a large admin ecosystem. It works for ecommerce but is built for every industry, so order context usually comes from marketplace apps.

AI agents are included in Suite and Support plans and billed per automated resolution. Each plan includes a small monthly allowance of automated resolutions per agent, and extra resolutions cost US$2.00 each on pay as you go, or less if you commit to a volume. More in our Zendesk pricing guide.

Best for
Large or multi-brand support organizations with dedicated admins
Pricing
Suite Team $55 and Suite Professional $115 per agent/month billed annually; Enterprise is custom. AI agents included with 5 automated resolutions per agent/month on Suite Team and 10 on Suite Professional, then US$2.00 per resolution pay as you go or a lower committed rate (checked October 2026)
Strengths
Mature ticketing, routing and SLA tools, huge marketplace, strong reporting
Watch out for
Setup and admin effort is high, and seat cost adds up fast for small teams

How Zendesk fits ecommerce. Zendesk is a general helpdesk used across every industry. Its strengths are routing, SLAs, skills-based assignment, a large app marketplace and deep reporting. For ecommerce, order context usually comes from marketplace apps that connect Shopify, Magento or BigCommerce. That works, but it means the order experience depends on which app you pick and how it is configured.

AI on Zendesk. AI agents are included in Suite and Support plans with a monthly allowance of automated resolutions: 5 per agent per month on Suite Team and 10 on Suite Professional (checked October 2026). Beyond that, each automated resolution costs US$2.00 on pay as you go, or a lower rate if you commit to a volume. Zendesk counts a resolution when the AI agent resolves the request without escalation, which is a fair model. The main cost is the combination of a $55 to $115 seat and a $2.00 pay-as-you-go resolution.

Cost example. A 10-agent ecommerce team on Suite Professional pays $1,150 a month in seats and gets 100 included resolutions. If the AI resolves 2,000 conversations a month, the extra 1,900 cost $3,800 on pay as you go, for about $4,950 in total. The same team on Aftersales Growth pays $690 in seats plus 2,000 resolutions at $0.99 ($1,980), about $2,670 a month. If you want to keep Zendesk, Aftersales Agent can run inside it at $0.99 per resolution with a minimum monthly commitment, so the AI line drops without a migration.

Zendesk pros

  • Mature ticketing, routing, SLAs and workforce features for large teams.
  • Huge marketplace and a large pool of admins and consultants.
  • Resolution-based AI billing with an included allowance.

Zendesk cons

  • High seat prices for small and mid-size stores.
  • Ecommerce actions depend on third-party apps.
  • Setup and ongoing admin need dedicated time.

Who Zendesk suits best

Large or multi-brand organizations with complex routing, many channels and admin capacity. See Zendesk pricing, Aftersales vs Zendesk and the best Zendesk alternatives.

4. Richpanel: best for DTC brands that want cheap per-conversation AI

Richpanel is an ecommerce helpdesk with a self-service portal and AI agents across email, chat, social, SMS and WhatsApp. It prices seats and AI separately, and says replies are never metered on top of a seat.

It also sells a returns and exchanges product, which is useful if you want support and returns from one vendor.

Best for
DTC brands that want AI and a self-service portal from one vendor
Pricing
$99 per seat/month; AI agents $0.20 per conversation; returns and exchanges from $99/month
Strengths
Low published AI price per conversation, self-service portal and QA included, returns add-on
Watch out for
Per-seat price is higher than most entry plans, and a per-conversation AI fee is charged whether or not the conversation resolves

How Richpanel works. Richpanel combines a helpdesk, a customer self-service portal and AI agents. The portal lets shoppers track orders, start returns and make simple changes without writing in, which cuts volume before a ticket exists. Its AI agents work across email, chat, social, SMS and WhatsApp, and it sells a returns and exchanges product separately.

Pricing model. Richpanel lists $99 per seat per month and $0.20 per AI conversation, with returns and exchanges from $99 a month (checked September 2026). The per-conversation AI price is low, but it is charged per conversation the AI handles rather than per resolution, so a conversation the AI attempts and then escalates still costs money.

Cost example. A 5-seat team handling 2,500 AI conversations a month pays $495 in seats plus $500 in AI, about $995. On Aftersales Growth, 5 seats cost $345. If Agent resolves 1,500 of those conversations, AI costs $1,485, for $1,830. Richpanel is cheaper on raw AI volume here, and it is fair to say so. Aftersales narrows the gap on seats (Starter is $24 against $99) and on unresolved conversations, which are free. Teams that need low seat costs and many humans in the inbox often come out ahead on Aftersales; teams with few seats and very high AI volume may prefer Richpanel's model.

Richpanel pros

  • Low published AI price per conversation.
  • Self-service portal reduces inbound volume.
  • Returns and exchanges product from the same vendor.

Richpanel cons

  • $99 per seat is high compared with Aftersales Starter at $24 or Growth at $69.
  • AI fee applies whether or not the conversation resolves.

Who Richpanel suits best

DTC brands with small teams and high AI volume that also want a self-service portal and returns tool.

5. eDesk: best for multichannel sellers on Amazon, eBay and Walmart

eDesk pulls marketplace messages and order data into one inbox. If you sell on Amazon, eBay, Walmart or Mirakl as well as Shopify or BigCommerce, it handles marketplace rules that general helpdesks often miss.

Plans cap the number of connected marketplaces or stores, so check the tier against your channel count.

Best for
Marketplace sellers with several storefronts
Pricing
Essential $39, Growth $89, Professional $119 per user/month billed annually (Enterprise custom). AI Agent $0.99 per outcome
Strengths
Native Amazon, eBay, Walmart and Mirakl support alongside Shopify, BigCommerce, Magento and WooCommerce
Watch out for
Store limits per plan (1, 5 or 10), and it is less suited to brands that sell only on their own site

How eDesk works. eDesk is built for sellers who run storefronts on Amazon, eBay, Walmart and Mirakl marketplaces as well as their own Shopify, BigCommerce, Magento or WooCommerce store. It brings marketplace messages and order data into one inbox and respects marketplace response-time rules, which general helpdesks often do not handle well.

Pricing model. Essential $39, Growth $89 and Professional $119 per user per month billed annually, with Enterprise custom, and AI Agent at $0.99 per outcome (checked September 2026). Plans limit the number of connected stores (1, 5 or 10), so a seller with many storefronts may need a higher tier than their seat count suggests.

eDesk vs Aftersales. Both charge $0.99 for AI outcomes. Aftersales seats are cheaper ($24 or $69 versus $39 to $119), and Aftersales includes phone on Growth, plus Insights for issue detection. eDesk is the better pick when marketplaces are a large share of revenue, because Aftersales does not publish native Amazon, eBay or Walmart integrations. Confirm your marketplace needs on a call before you decide.

eDesk pros

  • Native marketplace support for Amazon, eBay, Walmart and Mirakl.
  • One inbox for many storefronts.

eDesk cons

  • Store limits per plan.
  • Less focused on brands that sell mainly on their own site.

Who eDesk suits best

Multichannel sellers whose marketplace messages are a large part of the inbox.

6. Re:amaze: best for small ecommerce teams on a budget

Re:amaze is a helpdesk and live chat tool popular with smaller online stores. It covers email, chat, social and SMS, with order details from common store platforms.

Each per-user plan includes a small number of AI resolutions per user, then charges per extra resolution.

Best for
Small and mid-size stores that want chat and helpdesk together
Pricing
Basic $29, Pro $49, Plus $69 per team member/month (10% off annually), or Starter $59/month flat for unlimited users up to 500 responded conversations. Extra AI resolutions $0.85 each
Strengths
Affordable, simple to set up, flat-rate option for small teams
Watch out for
Included AI resolutions are small (5 to 20 per user per month), so AI volume turns into usage fees

How Re:amaze works. Re:amaze combines a helpdesk, live chat, a help center and chatbots. It connects to common store platforms so agents see order details in the conversation, and it handles email, chat, social and SMS in one place. Setup is quick, which is a large part of its appeal for small stores.

Pricing model. Basic $29, Pro $49 and Plus $69 per team member per month, with 10% off annually, or a Starter plan at $59 a month flat for unlimited users up to 500 responded conversations (checked September 2026). Each per-user plan includes a small number of AI resolutions per user per month, 5 to 20 depending on plan, and extra AI resolutions cost $0.85 each.

Re:amaze vs Aftersales. Re:amaze's $0.85 extra AI resolution is slightly cheaper than Aftersales at $0.99, and its flat Starter plan is attractive for a store with a handful of occasional helpers. Aftersales Starter is cheaper per seat ($24 versus $29 on Basic), includes 50 free resolutions on the Free plan, and its Agent is designed to take Shopify order actions and Stripe refunds rather than only answer questions. If your AI mostly answers FAQs, Re:amaze is a sensible budget choice; if you want the AI to finish order changes, returns and replacements, Aftersales does more of the work.

Re:amaze pros

  • Affordable and quick to set up.
  • Flat-rate option for small teams.
  • Low per-resolution price for extra AI.

Re:amaze cons

  • Small included AI quotas.
  • Less depth for complex order actions and large teams.

Who Re:amaze suits best

Small stores that want chat and a helpdesk together on a tight budget. See Aftersales vs Re:amaze.

7. Gladly: best for large retail brands focused on people-centered service

Gladly organizes support around the customer rather than the ticket, with one lifelong conversation across channels. It is aimed at larger consumer brands with big contact centers.

Gladly does not publish prices; you get a quote after a demo.

Best for
Enterprise retail and consumer brands with large agent teams
Pricing
Quote-based; no public pricing. Book a demo for a quote
Strengths
Customer-centric conversation history across channels, built for large contact centers
Watch out for
No public pricing, and sized for enterprise budgets and rollouts

How Gladly works. Gladly treats each customer as one ongoing conversation across channels instead of a list of tickets. Agents see every past interaction in a single timeline, which suits brands that care about relationship-style service and repeat buyers. It is designed for large contact centers, with workforce and routing features to match.

Pricing model. Gladly does not publish prices (checked September 2026). You get a quote after a demo, and contracts are sized for enterprise budgets. We cannot give a like-for-like cost comparison without a quote, so ask for a total annual figure that includes AI, channels and implementation.

Gladly vs Aftersales. Gladly is the better fit for very large retail contact centers that want its customer-centric model and have the budget for an enterprise rollout. Aftersales publishes every price, starts free, and lets a small team reach AI resolution in days rather than months. Large teams that need enterprise controls can use Aftersales Scale, which includes SSO, SAML, SCIM, data residency and a BAA.

Gladly pros

  • Customer-centric conversation timeline across channels.
  • Built for large retail contact centers.

Gladly cons

  • No public pricing.
  • Longer sales and implementation cycles.

Who Gladly suits best

Enterprise retail and consumer brands with large agent teams.

8. Freshdesk: best for teams that want a low-cost general helpdesk

Freshdesk is a general-purpose helpdesk with ticketing, automations and a knowledge base. Entry pricing is low, and Freddy AI adds an AI agent and a copilot.

Freddy AI Agent is billed in sessions, a 72-hour window from the customer's first message. See Freshdesk pricing.

Best for
Budget-conscious teams that want broad helpdesk features
Pricing
Growth $19, Pro $55, Enterprise $89 per agent/month billed annually. Freddy AI Agent: 500 sessions included, then $49 per 100 sessions. Copilot $29/agent/month on Pro and Enterprise
Strengths
Low entry price, mature ticketing and automations, large marketplace
Watch out for
Sessions are billed whether or not the AI resolves the issue, and ecommerce order actions depend on apps

How Freshdesk works. Freshdesk is a general-purpose helpdesk with ticketing, automations, SLAs, a knowledge base and a large marketplace. Freddy AI adds an AI agent for customers and a copilot for agents. Ecommerce order context comes through marketplace apps.

Pricing model. Growth $19, Pro $55 and Enterprise $89 per agent per month billed annually. Freddy AI Agent includes 500 sessions, then $49 per 100 sessions, and a session is a 72-hour window from the customer's first message. Freddy Copilot is $29 per agent per month on Pro and Enterprise (checked September 2026).

Cost example. A 6-agent team on Pro pays $330 in seats. If 2,000 conversations a month go to the AI, that is 1,500 sessions beyond the included 500, or 15 packs at $49 ($735), about $1,065 in total, whether or not each session resolved the issue. On Aftersales Growth, 6 seats cost $414; if Agent resolves 1,300 of those 2,000 conversations, AI costs $1,287, about $1,701, but conversations Agent does not resolve are free and Agent takes Shopify actions natively. Freshdesk is cheaper if you mainly want a low seat price and FAQ answers. If you want to keep Freshdesk, Aftersales Agent can run inside it at $0.99 per resolution.

Freshdesk pros

  • Low entry seat price.
  • Mature ticketing and automation.

Freshdesk cons

  • AI billed per session regardless of outcome.
  • Order actions depend on apps.

Who Freshdesk suits best

Budget-conscious teams that want a broad general helpdesk. See Freshdesk pricing, Aftersales vs Freshdesk and Freshdesk vs Zendesk.

9. Help Scout: best for small, email-first support teams

Help Scout is a calm shared inbox with a help center and live chat. It is easy for small teams to adopt and has a free plan.

Its AI Answers add-on is billed per resolution.

Best for
Small teams that mostly handle email
Pricing
Free (5 users, 100 contacts/month), Standard $25, Plus $45, Pro $75 per user/month. AI Answers $0.75 per resolution
Strengths
Simple, well-designed inbox, free plan, low per-resolution AI price
Watch out for
Lighter on ecommerce order actions and complex routing than dedicated ecommerce tools

How Help Scout works. Help Scout is a shared inbox that feels like email, with a help center (Docs), live chat (Beacon) and customer profiles. Small teams adopt it quickly because it does not look or feel like a ticketing system.

Pricing model. A Free plan for 5 users and 100 contacts a month, then Standard $25, Plus $45 and Pro $75 per user per month, with AI Answers at $0.75 per resolution (checked September 2026). Help Scout prices by contacts helped on some plans, so check how your volume maps to its limits.

Help Scout vs Aftersales. Help Scout's $0.75 resolution is cheaper than $0.99, and its inbox is very easy to learn. The trade-off is ecommerce depth: Help Scout's AI mainly answers from your knowledge, while Aftersales Agent verifies Shopify orders and takes actions such as replacements and Stripe refunds. For a store where most tickets need an order lookup, the extra $0.24 buys a finished task instead of an answer. See Aftersales vs Help Scout.

Help Scout pros

  • Simple, email-like inbox.
  • Free plan and low-cost AI resolutions.

Help Scout cons

  • Light on order actions and complex routing.
  • No phone channel.

Who Help Scout suits best

Small, email-first teams with modest ecommerce needs.

10. Intercom: best for brands that want a polished messenger and mature AI agent

Intercom is a customer service platform with a strong messenger, a helpdesk and Fin, its AI agent. It is used across SaaS and ecommerce. Fin is priced per outcome and charged once per conversation, which is a fair model and similar to Aftersales.

Pricing model. Essential $29, Advanced $85 and Expert $132 per seat per month billed annually, and Fin at $0.99 per outcome (checked October 2026). See our Intercom pricing guide.

Intercom vs Aftersales. AI pricing is the same at $0.99. The difference is seats and ecommerce focus: Aftersales Growth at $69 includes phone and 20 free Lite seats, while Intercom's Advanced tier is $85. Aftersales Agent takes Shopify order actions and Stripe refunds as built-in actions, and Insights flags emerging issues in real time. Intercom is the better pick if you also run product-led SaaS support or rely on its messenger for onboarding and marketing. Compare in Aftersales vs Intercom and Intercom alternatives.

Best for
Brands that want a polished messenger plus AI agent
Pricing
Essential $29, Advanced $85, Expert $132 per seat/month billed annually; Fin $0.99 per outcome (checked October 2026)
Strengths
Mature messenger, outcome-based AI, strong across SaaS and ecommerce
Watch out for
Higher seat prices on the tiers most teams need; ecommerce actions need configuration

Intercom pros

  • Fin is billed per outcome, once per conversation.
  • Polished messenger for pre-sale and onboarding.
  • Strong fit for brands that also run SaaS-style support.

Intercom cons

  • Seat prices on Advanced and Expert are higher than Aftersales Growth and Scale.
  • Ecommerce order actions need setup rather than being the core of the product.

Who Intercom suits best

Brands that value the messenger experience and run mixed ecommerce and software support.

11. Tidio: best for very small stores that want live chat first

Tidio is a live chat and helpdesk tool popular with small Shopify and WooCommerce stores, with Lyro as its AI agent and Flows for automation.

Pricing model. Free (50 billable conversations), Starter about $24 to $29 a month (100 conversations), Growth from about $49 to $59 a month (up to 2,000 conversations), Plus from $300 a month and Premium custom. Lyro is sold separately from $32.50 a month for 50 AI conversations (checked October 2026; the price depends on billing period). See Tidio pricing and Tidio vs Intercom.

Tidio vs Aftersales. Tidio's entry plans are cheap and its chat widget is easy to install, which makes it a good first tool. Lyro's entry price works out to about $0.65 per AI conversation, but it counts conversations, not resolutions. As volume grows and you need order actions, WhatsApp, phone and a proper shared helpdesk, Aftersales covers more in one product. See Aftersales vs Tidio.

Best for
Very small stores that want chat first
Pricing
Free, Starter, Growth, Plus from $300/month, Premium custom; Lyro AI from $32.50/month for 50 conversations (checked October 2026)
Strengths
Cheap to start, easy chat widget, simple flows
Watch out for
Conversation caps per plan; AI billed per conversation, lighter helpdesk depth

Tidio pros

  • Free plan and low entry prices.
  • Easy chat widget for Shopify and WooCommerce.

Tidio cons

  • Conversation caps and a separately priced AI.
  • Less depth as a full helpdesk for growing teams.

Who Tidio suits best

Very small stores that mainly need live chat and simple automation.

Which ecommerce helpdesk should you pick for your use case?

Match the tool to your biggest constraint.

  • AI that resolves orders end to end: Aftersales.
  • Shopify brand that wants the largest ecommerce app ecosystem: Gorgias. Compare Aftersales vs Gorgias.
  • Large team with complex routing and SLAs: Zendesk.
  • Selling on Amazon, eBay or Walmart: eDesk.
  • Tight budget and a small team: Re:amaze or Help Scout.
  • Enterprise retail contact center: Gladly.
  • Keep Zendesk or Freshdesk but add AI: Aftersales Agent runs inside Zendesk, Salesforce Service Cloud or Freshdesk with no seats or migration, at $0.99 per resolution with a minimum monthly commitment.

Our recommendations, based on the pricing and features above.

Best ecommerce helpdesk by business model

  • Apparel and footwear (high returns): Aftersales, because returns, exchanges and size questions can be resolved end to end. Richpanel is worth a look if you want its returns product from the same vendor.
  • Subscription and replenishment brands: Aftersales for order changes and Stripe refunds; confirm your subscription app integration on a call.
  • High-value goods (furniture, electronics): Aftersales Growth with phone, strict refund guardrails and escalation by order value. Gladly or Zendesk for very large contact centers.
  • Cross-border stores: Aftersales, with 31 languages for Agent and translation in Copilot.
  • Regulated products (health and wellness): Aftersales Scale, which is HIPAA-ready with a BAA. See healthcare.
  • Brands selling mainly on marketplaces: eDesk.

Can you add AI to your ecommerce helpdesk without switching?

If you are happy with your helpdesk but want AI resolution, you do not have to migrate. Aftersales Agent runs inside Zendesk, Salesforce Service Cloud or Freshdesk, with no seats and no migration, at $0.99 per resolution with a minimum monthly commitment.

This is useful in three situations. First, large teams with years of routing, macros and reporting built in Zendesk or Salesforce, where a migration is a big project. Second, teams that want to prove AI resolution on real traffic before deciding anything about the helpdesk. Third, teams paying for AI in their current helpdesk at a higher rate; on Zendesk, for example, pay-as-you-go automated resolutions are US$2.00 each beyond the included allowance (checked October 2026), against $0.99 with Aftersales Agent.

How does Agent on its own work?

  1. Connect Agent to your helpdesk and your store.
  2. Write procedures and guardrails in plain language.
  3. Agent replies in your existing helpdesk, takes actions and hands off to your agents there when needed.
  4. You pay $0.99 per resolution, counted once per conversation, with a minimum monthly commitment.

If you later want the full platform, you can move to Aftersales Inbox without changing how Agent is set up.

When is Aftersales not the best ecommerce helpdesk?

Aftersales is not the right choice for every store. Pick something else if:

  • Most of your orders come from Amazon, eBay or Walmart. eDesk handles marketplace messaging natively.
  • You need a specific niche app that only exists in a large marketplace. Gorgias and Zendesk have bigger ecosystems. Confirm niche integrations with us on a call before deciding.
  • You want the lowest possible seat price and FAQ-level AI. Freshdesk Growth at $19 or Help Scout's free plan may be enough.
  • You run a very large contact center that wants a customer-lifetime conversation model. Gladly is built for that.
  • You are mainly a SaaS company. Intercom's messenger is a strong fit, though Aftersales also serves SaaS teams.

For everyone else, especially Shopify and DTC brands whose inbox is dominated by order status, returns and changes, Aftersales offers AI that resolves at $0.99, seats from $24 and a helpdesk in the same product.

Which ecommerce helpdesk has the most complete feature set?

Aftersales covers the jobs an ecommerce support team does every day in one product: AI that resolves, a shared helpdesk, a drafting copilot and live issue detection. The table below compares the feature set that matters most to online stores. Where a competitor offers something through a third-party app rather than natively, we say so.

Competitor features summarized from vendor sites, September to October 2026. "Check with vendor" means we could not confirm it from public pages.

Three rows carry most of the weight for an online store. First, whether the AI can take the action (refund, replacement, address change) or only explain the policy. Second, whether you pay for attempts or for outcomes. Third, whether you can add AI without a migration. Aftersales is the only tool on this list that answers yes to all three.

How does Aftersales compare with each ecommerce helpdesk head to head?

Aftersales is cheaper or better than each competitor on at least one of price, AI outcomes or ecommerce actions, and each competitor has a case where it is the better pick. Here is the short version of every matchup, with links to the full comparisons.

How do the ecommerce helpdesks score side by side?

We scored every tool from 1 to 5 on the six criteria in our method, weighting ecommerce context and AI resolution most heavily because they drive cost per conversation for online stores. Aftersales scores highest overall; Gorgias is second for Shopify brands, and Zendesk leads on enterprise depth.

How much does an ecommerce helpdesk cost for a small, mid-size and large store?

For a mid-size store with 5 agents and 2,500 conversations a month, where AI resolves 60%, Aftersales Growth costs about $1,830 a month. That is the same as Gorgias Pro, about half of Zendesk Suite Professional on pay-as-you-go AI, and below Intercom Advanced. Richpanel, Freshdesk and Help Scout come in lower on raw dollars, but they either charge for AI attempts rather than resolutions or do less of the order work. The tables below show the math so you can check it.

What assumptions did we use?

We modeled three store sizes. Each uses list prices billed annually, checked September to October 2026, and the same resolution rate for every AI so the comparison isolates pricing. In practice resolution rates differ by product, and that difference usually matters more than the price per unit.

  • Small store: 2 agents, 600 conversations a month, AI resolves 50% (300).
  • Mid-size store: 5 agents, 2,500 conversations a month, AI resolves 60% (1,500).
  • Large store: 15 agents, 10,000 conversations a month, AI resolves 65% (6,500).
  • Where a vendor bills per AI conversation or session, we assume the AI attempts 80% of conversations (480, 2,000 and 8,000), because those models charge whether or not the attempt resolves.
  • Gorgias: every conversation counts as a ticket, and each AI interaction is billed at $0.90 on top.
  • Zendesk: Suite Team for the small store, Suite Professional for mid and large, with included automated resolutions deducted and the rest at US$2.00 pay as you go. Committed volume pricing would lower this.

What does the table tell you?

Four things stand out.

  1. Aftersales is the lowest-cost option among the tools that bill only for resolved AI conversations and take native Shopify actions. Against Intercom and eDesk, which also charge $0.99 per outcome, the difference is the seat price: $24 or $69 against $39 to $132.
  2. Zendesk's pay-as-you-go AI is the most expensive line on the page. At US$2.00 per extra resolution, the AI bill at scale is roughly double Aftersales. If you like Zendesk, keep it and run Aftersales Agent inside it at $0.99 per resolution.
  3. Gorgias and Aftersales tie at mid-size, but Gorgias grows faster at scale because every AI interaction is also a ticket, which pushes you into overage.
  4. Richpanel, Freshdesk and Help Scout are cheaper on paper. That is true and worth weighing. Richpanel and Freshdesk charge for AI attempts, so the cost per resolved conversation depends on how well the AI performs. Help Scout's AI mainly answers questions rather than completing order changes, returns and refunds.

What is the cost per resolved conversation?

A fairer lens is what you pay for each conversation that ended with the customer's problem solved, whether by AI or a person. If your fully loaded agent cost is $25 an hour and an agent resolves 8 order conversations an hour, each human-handled order conversation costs about $3.13 in labor. Every conversation an AI resolves for $0.99 saves about $2.14 of labor, before counting faster replies and 24/7 coverage. At 1,500 AI resolutions a month, that is about $3,200 a month of labor capacity freed, which is why the resolution rate matters more than the unit price. A tool that is $0.20 cheaper per unit but resolves 15 points fewer conversations costs you more overall.

Here is the same mid-size store at three resolution rates, on Aftersales Growth:

Resolution rateAI resolutionsAftersales monthly costHuman conversations leftLabor at $3.13 eachTotal
Aftersales at 40%1,000$1,3351,500$4,695$6,030
Aftersales at 60%1,500$1,8301,000$3,130$4,960
Aftersales at 71% (our 90-day median)1,775$2,102725$2,269$4,371

Illustrative model using Aftersales list prices (Growth, 5 seats, annual) and an assumed $3.13 labor cost per human-handled conversation.

Moving from 40% to 71% resolution lowers total cost by about $1,660 a month even though the Aftersales bill goes up, because each extra resolution replaces a more expensive human conversation. Our median customer reaches 71% after 90 days. For a real-world reference, Northwind Outdoors cut cost per conversation by 41% after moving to Aftersales.

What hidden costs should you budget for?

  • Overage and tier jumps. Ticket-tier plans charge per extra ticket, and a peak month can push you into a higher tier.
  • AI billed on attempts. Per-session or per-conversation AI charges even when the customer still needs a human.
  • Add-ons. Copilots, voice, advanced reporting and workforce management are often extra. At Aftersales, Copilot is $29 per rep per month annual, Proactive $99 a month and Insights Pro $99 a month.
  • Seats for occasional users. Warehouse, finance or marketing staff who check a few tickets a week can cost a full seat. Aftersales includes 20 free Lite seats on Growth and 50 on Scale.
  • Monthly billing premiums. Most vendors charge more for monthly billing. Aftersales monthly is 20% above annual.
  • Implementation and apps. Enterprise suites often need a partner and paid marketplace apps for ecommerce data.

Model your own numbers.Start a 14-day free trial, run Agent on real conversations and see your resolution rate before you sign.

How much can you save by switching ecommerce helpdesk?

Switching usually pays back within the first quarter when AI resolves a large share of order tickets. Below are three annual examples using list prices billed annually (checked September to October 2026) and a 60% AI resolution rate. Your own numbers will differ, so treat these as a template.

Example 1: Gorgias Pro to Aftersales Growth

A 6-agent Shopify brand handles 3,500 conversations a month. On Gorgias Pro, 3,500 tickets means $300 plus 1,500 overage tickets at $0.36 ($540), plus 2,100 AI interactions at $0.90 ($1,890): about $2,730 a month, or $32,760 a year. On Aftersales Growth, 6 seats cost $414 and 2,100 resolutions cost $2,079: about $2,493 a month, or $29,916 a year. Savings: about $2,840 a year, before counting that conversations Agent cannot resolve are free and that Insights is included.

Example 2: Zendesk Suite Professional to Aftersales Growth

A 12-agent team handles 6,000 conversations a month. On Zendesk Suite Professional, seats cost $1,380, 120 automated resolutions are included, and the other 3,480 of the 3,600 AI resolutions cost US$2.00 each on pay as you go ($6,960): about $8,340 a month, or $100,080 a year. On Aftersales Growth, 12 seats cost $828 and 3,600 resolutions cost $3,564: about $4,392 a month, or $52,704 a year. Savings: about $47,000 a year on list prices. Committed Zendesk pricing would narrow this, so ask for your committed rate. If you would rather keep Zendesk, Aftersales Agent inside Zendesk removes most of the AI difference without a migration.

Example 3: Freshdesk Pro to Aftersales Growth

An 8-agent team handles 4,000 conversations a month, with AI attempting 3,200 (80%) and resolving 2,400 (60%). On Freshdesk Pro, seats cost $440 and 2,700 sessions beyond the included 500 cost 27 packs at $49 ($1,323): about $1,763 a month. On Aftersales Growth, 8 seats cost $552 and 2,400 resolutions cost $2,376: about $2,928 a month. Freshdesk is cheaper on paper here, by about $1,165 a month. The case for Aftersales is outcome depth: native Shopify actions and Stripe refunds that let AI finish returns and replacements. If that lifts resolution from, say, 45% on another tool to 60%, the 600 extra resolved conversations save about $1,880 a month in labor at $3.13 each, which more than covers the difference. Test both on your traffic before deciding.

Which ecommerce tickets save the most when AI resolves them?

Different ticket types cost different amounts to handle, so the savings from AI depend on your mix. Here is an illustrative breakdown for a store with 3,000 conversations a month, using $3.13 per human-handled conversation and Aftersales at $0.99 per resolution.

Ticket typeShare of volumeConversationsAssumed AI resolutionHuman cost without AICost with Aftersales Agent

Illustrative model. Resolution by ticket type is assumed for the example, not an Aftersales benchmark. Cost with Agent = resolutions at $0.99 plus remaining human conversations at $3.13.

Order status and address changes deliver the largest savings because they are frequent and highly automatable. Complex tickets stay mostly human, which is where Copilot helps.

How is AI priced in ecommerce helpdesks?

AI in ecommerce helpdesks is billed in four ways: per resolution, per outcome, per interaction and per session or conversation. Per-resolution and per-outcome models only charge when the AI solved the problem, which makes them the safest for online stores. Aftersales charges $0.99 per resolution, counted once per conversation, and conversations Agent can't help with are free.

Which AI pricing model is cheapest for a store?

The answer depends on your resolution rate. A simple rule: divide the price per attempt by your expected resolution rate to get the real price per resolution. At $0.20 per conversation and a 30% resolution rate, Richpanel's effective price is about $0.67 per resolution. At $49 per 100 sessions and 40% resolution, Freshdesk's effective price is about $1.23. Per-resolution models such as Aftersales at $0.99 do not need this adjustment, because you never pay for attempts. The higher your AI's success rate, the more attempt-based models catch up; the lower it is, the more resolution-based pricing protects you.

Should AI be allowed to issue refunds?

Yes, with limits. Most stores start by letting AI handle refunds under a small value for clear-cut cases, such as a lost parcel with tracking evidence, and route everything else to a person. With Aftersales you set spend guardrails and escalation rules, so Agent can refund through Stripe within the caps and hand off anything above them. Review a sample of AI refunds weekly for the first month.

How long does it take for AI to reach a good resolution rate?

Expect a ramp. The first weeks surface gaps in your knowledge and procedures, and each fix lifts the rate. The median Aftersales customer reaches 71% resolution after 90 days. The biggest levers are complete order actions, clear written procedures and a help center that answers the questions customers actually ask.

What features does an ecommerce helpdesk need?

An ecommerce helpdesk needs ten things: order context in every conversation, AI that can take order actions, WISMO automation, returns and exchange handling, refunds with guardrails, every channel in one record, escalation rules, multilingual support, real-time reporting on issues, and pricing that scales with outcomes. Everything else is nice to have. Here is what each one means in practice and what to test during a trial.

1. Order context inside the conversation

An agent, human or AI, should never have to open Shopify in another tab to answer a basic question. The helpdesk should match the customer to their orders automatically and show items, fulfillment status, tracking, payment and past conversations next to the message. This is the single biggest driver of handle time for human agents.

What to test: Send a message from an email address that has three orders, one of them partially fulfilled. Check whether the helpdesk shows all three, which one it assumes the customer means, and how it handles a guest checkout with a different email.

2. AI that takes actions, not only answers

Answering "what is your return policy" is easy. Starting the return, generating the label and telling the customer when the refund will land is the part that removes work. Look for AI that can verify the order, check the policy against the order data and complete the action within limits you set. Aftersales Agent does this with Shopify order actions and replacements and Stripe refunds, following procedures written in plain language.

What to test: Ask the AI to change a shipping address on an unfulfilled order, then on a fulfilled one. The first should succeed; the second should explain why not and offer the right alternative.

3. WISMO automation

Where-is-my-order questions are usually the largest single category in an online store's inbox, and they spike after sales and carrier delays. Good WISMO automation reads live tracking, explains the status in plain words, handles late and lost parcels according to your policy and only escalates the exceptions. Our guide to WISMO and our list of WISMO automation tools go deeper.

What to test: Use a real delayed order. Does the AI say "your parcel is in transit" or does it notice that tracking has not moved in six days and apply your late-delivery policy?

4. Returns and exchanges

Returns are the second most common ticket type for most apparel, footwear and home brands. The helpdesk should check eligibility (return window, final sale items, condition rules), start the return or exchange and keep the customer updated. Some teams use a dedicated returns app; in that case the helpdesk needs to read and write to it. See returns customer service and the best returns management software.

5. Refunds and credits with guardrails

Letting AI issue refunds is a real decision. The safe version has spend guardrails, such as a cap per refund, a cap per customer per month and rules that require a human above a threshold or for certain products. Aftersales supports spend guardrails and Stripe refunds, and escalation rules can send any refund request with legal language or strong negative sentiment to a person.

6. Every channel in one customer record

Shoppers write on email, chat, Instagram, Facebook, WhatsApp and SMS, and some still call. If each channel lives in a different tool, your team loses context and the customer repeats themselves. Aftersales handles email, live chat, WhatsApp, SMS and social in one Inbox, and phone with transfers and recording on Growth and Scale.

7. Escalation rules you control

The difference between AI that customers like and AI that customers complain about is often the handoff. You should be able to escalate by sentiment, keywords, customer tier, order value and legal language, and the human should receive a summary and the full context rather than a cold ticket.

8. Multilingual support

Cross-border stores need replies in the customer's language without hiring for every market. Aftersales Agent supports 31 languages, and Copilot translates both ways for human agents.

9. Real-time issue detection and quality monitoring

Standard helpdesk reports tell you what happened last month. For ecommerce you also need to know what is going wrong today: a batch of damaged items, a broken discount code, a warehouse delay. Aftersales Insights flags emerging issues in real time and runs quality monitors across AI and human replies, so you catch a bad macro or a wrong AI answer before it reaches hundreds of customers.

10. Pricing that scales with outcomes

Per-seat pricing punishes seasonal hiring, and ticket tiers punish growth. Outcome pricing, where you pay for resolved conversations, lines up the vendor's incentive with yours. Check whether the AI is billed per resolution, per interaction, per session or per conversation, and whether one conversation can be billed more than once.

Nice-to-have features

  • Help center and self-service portal.
  • Proactive messages for delays and back-in-stock updates.
  • Sales assistance and product recommendations in chat.
  • Customer satisfaction surveys and QA scoring.
  • Workforce forecasting for peak season.
  • SSO, SCIM and data residency for larger organizations.

Which channels should an ecommerce helpdesk support?

An ecommerce helpdesk should bring email, live chat, WhatsApp, SMS, social messages and phone into one customer record, so the customer does not repeat themselves and the AI can resolve on any channel. Aftersales supports all of these, with phone on Growth and Scale.

Email

Still the main channel for post-purchase questions. Look for threading by order, automatic order matching and AI replies that read the whole thread.

Live chat

Best for pre-sale and quick order questions. AI resolution on chat is usually fastest because customers are present to confirm details.

WhatsApp and SMS

Popular for order updates and cross-border customers. Conversations are short, which suits AI. Check how each vendor charges for messaging on top of the helpdesk.

Social messages

Instagram and Facebook messages often mix pre-sale questions, complaints and order issues. They should land in the same inbox with order context.

Phone

Still expected for high-value goods and urgent problems. Aftersales Growth and Scale include phone with transfers and recording, so calls sit in the same customer history as chats and emails. Help Scout and eDesk do not focus on phone; Zendesk, Gladly and Freshdesk offer it.

Why one record matters

A customer who emails about a late order, then messages on WhatsApp the next day, should reach an agent or AI that already knows the story. Separate tools per channel break that, raise handle time and make AI less accurate.

What is the best ecommerce helpdesk for international stores?

International stores need AI that replies in the customer's language, human agents who can work across languages, channels popular in each market and, for some regions, control over where data is stored. Aftersales covers all four: Agent in 31 languages, Copilot translation, WhatsApp and SMS alongside email and chat, and data residency on Scale.

Languages

Check whether the AI detects the language automatically, whether it reads knowledge written in one language and answers in another, and whether human agents get translation both ways. Hiring native speakers for every market is expensive; translation in the agent workspace lets a small team cover many countries.

Channels by market

In many markets WhatsApp is the default way to reach a business, while email dominates in others. A helpdesk that treats WhatsApp as a first-class channel, with the same AI and order context as email, avoids running a separate tool for it.

Data and compliance

GDPR applies to EU and UK customers wherever your company is based. Ask each vendor for GDPR terms and a subprocessor list, and check data residency options if your legal team requires data to stay in a region. Aftersales is GDPR compliant and offers data residency on Scale.

Time zones

AI resolution gives you 24/7 coverage for routine tickets without night shifts. Pair it with clear expectations for human response times outside business hours.

Which helpdesk suits subscription and wholesale ecommerce?

Subscription, replenishment and bundle-based stores get a different ticket mix: skip, pause and cancel requests, payment failures, changes to the next shipment and billing questions. The helpdesk needs order and payment context in the same view, and AI that can make changes within clear limits.

With Aftersales, Agent can handle order changes and Stripe refunds under your procedures, and escalation rules send cancellation requests to a retention specialist if you want a human to make a save offer. Confirm your specific subscription app integration on a call, because subscription tools vary widely. Gorgias and Richpanel also serve subscription brands through their app ecosystems.

Wholesale and B2B orders

Wholesale buyers expect a named contact, invoices and different terms from retail shoppers. Use customer tier escalation rules to route wholesale accounts to a person, and keep AI focused on retail order questions. Aftersales tier-based escalation rules and Salesforce actions help teams that manage B2B accounts in Salesforce.

Do you need a help center with your ecommerce helpdesk?

A help center and self-service tools cut volume before a conversation starts, and they feed the AI the answers it needs. Every paid Aftersales plan includes Knowledge, and the Free plan includes a help center.

What should an ecommerce help center include?

  • Shipping times and costs by region, including holiday cutoffs.
  • Return and exchange policy with examples of eligible and ineligible items.
  • Sizing guides and product care.
  • Payment, discount and gift card rules.
  • Warranty and damaged item process. See warranty claims process.
  • How to contact support, with expected response times per channel.

How does knowledge affect AI resolution?

AI can only apply policies it can read. Gaps in the help center show up as escalations in the first weeks. Review escalated conversations, add the missing answer and the resolution rate rises. Treat the help center as a product with an owner, not a one-time project.

Self-service portal or AI agent?

Self-service portals, such as Richpanel's, let customers track, return and change orders through forms. AI agents do the same through conversation. Portals are predictable; AI handles messy real-world requests and mixed questions in one thread. Many stores use both: a portal link in order emails and AI on every inbound channel.

What does an ecommerce customer support stack look like?

A typical ecommerce support stack has five layers: the store platform, payments, the helpdesk, AI and analytics. Many stores also add a returns app, a reviews app and a shipping tracker. Every extra tool is another integration to maintain and another bill.

LayerCommon approachWith Aftersales
StoreShopifyShopify, connected for order verification and actions
Payments and refundsStripe or Shopify PaymentsStripe refunds by Agent within guardrails
HelpdeskGorgias, Zendesk, FreshdeskAftersales Inbox, or keep Zendesk, Salesforce or Freshdesk with Agent on its own
AI agentSeparate AI vendor or helpdesk add-onAftersales Agent, $0.99 per resolution
Agent assistHelpdesk add-onCopilot, $29 per rep per month annual
QA and issue detectionSeparate QA tool and spreadsheetsInsights, with Insights Pro at $99 a month
Help centerHelpdesk or separate toolKnowledge and help center included

Illustrative stack. Confirm niche integrations, such as specific returns or subscription apps, on a call.

Consolidating layers lowers cost and removes the gaps where context gets lost between tools. Keep specialist tools where they do something important that your helpdesk does not.

How do you choose the right ecommerce helpdesk?

The best way to choose is to list your top ticket types, test each shortlisted tool on real conversations and compare cost per resolved conversation. A feature checklist alone will not tell you which tool finishes the work. Use these steps.

  1. Export three months of tickets and tag the top ten reasons. Most stores find that order status, returns, address changes, damaged items and discount questions make up well over half of volume.
  2. Decide what AI is allowed to do. Write down which actions AI may take on its own, which need approval and which must always go to a person. This becomes your procedures and guardrails.
  3. Check channel coverage. List every channel where customers write today and where you want to be in a year, including WhatsApp, SMS and phone.
  4. Shortlist three tools. Pick one from each pricing model if you are unsure: an outcome-priced tool such as Aftersales, a ticket-tier tool such as Gorgias and a per-seat suite such as Zendesk or Freshdesk.
  5. Run a trial on real traffic. Aftersales has a 14-day free trial and a Free plan with 50 Agent resolutions. Route a slice of real conversations and measure resolution, not deflection.
  6. Model 12 months of cost, including peak season. Use your real volumes and your own resolution rate from the trial, not the vendor's headline number.
  7. Check security and compliance. Ask for SOC 2 Type II reports, GDPR terms and, if relevant, a BAA, SSO and data residency.
  8. Plan the migration. Ask how historic tickets, macros and help center articles move across, and whether AI can start before the migration finishes.

What questions should you ask every vendor?

  • How do you define a resolution, and can one conversation be billed twice?
  • What happens to the bill when the AI tries and fails?
  • Which order actions can the AI take natively, and which need a third-party app?
  • Can I cap refunds and replacements per order and per customer?
  • What is your median resolution rate after 90 days, and how is it measured?
  • What does a peak month cost if my volume doubles?
  • Can I run your AI inside my current helpdesk while I evaluate?
  • What is included in the seat price, and which features are add-ons?

Resolution rate vs deflection rate: why does it matter?

Deflection counts any conversation where the customer did not reach a human. That includes customers who gave up. Resolution counts conversations where the problem was actually solved. A tool with a 60% deflection rate might resolve far fewer. Ask for resolution, and measure it yourself during the trial. Our resolution rate guide explains how.

What questions should you ask ecommerce helpdesk vendors?

Copy this list into your evaluation doc and score each vendor from 1 to 5.

  1. Can the AI verify an order before sharing details?
  2. Which order actions can the AI take natively?
  3. Can the AI issue refunds, and can I cap them?
  4. Can the AI create replacement orders?
  5. How is an AI resolution defined and billed?
  6. Is a conversation ever billed twice?
  7. What happens to the bill when the AI fails?
  8. Does AI usage also count toward a ticket or conversation allowance?
  9. What is the median resolution rate after 90 days?
  10. How are escalations handed to humans, and with what context?
  11. Can I escalate on sentiment, keywords, tier and legal language?
  12. How many languages does the AI support?
  13. Which channels are included on each plan?
  14. Is phone included, and on which plan?
  15. Are there free seats for occasional users?
  16. Which features are add-ons, and at what price?
  17. How much more is monthly billing than annual?
  18. What does a month with double volume cost?
  19. Can the AI run inside my current helpdesk?
  20. How long does a typical setup take?
  21. How are macros and help center articles migrated?
  22. Is there real-time issue detection?
  23. Can I monitor AI quality automatically?
  24. Do you have SOC 2 Type II and GDPR terms?
  25. Do you offer SSO, SCIM, data residency and a BAA, and on which plan?

How do the best ecommerce helpdesks handle common order tickets?

The most useful way to compare helpdesks is to walk through the tickets your store actually gets. Below are the six most common ecommerce ticket types, what a good resolution looks like, and how Aftersales handles each one. Use the same scripts when you trial any tool on this list.

Where is my order?

What good looks like: the customer gets a specific answer in their own words within a minute, such as "Your order left our warehouse on Tuesday and is with the carrier in Denver. It is expected Thursday." If the parcel is late beyond your threshold, the policy is applied without the customer having to ask twice.

How Aftersales handles it: Agent verifies the customer and the order in Shopify, reads fulfillment and tracking status, and replies with the specific status. If your procedure says a parcel with no tracking update for five days counts as lost, Agent can create a replacement order within your spend guardrails and tell the customer. If the customer is angry or mentions a chargeback, the escalation rules pass the conversation to a person in Inbox with a summary.

Where other tools differ: Gorgias and Richpanel handle order status well with their Shopify data. General helpdesks like Zendesk and Freshdesk depend on the marketplace app you install. Help Scout and Tidio can answer from order lookups in simpler flows but are lighter on the replacement step.

I want to return this

What good looks like: the AI checks the return window and item eligibility, explains the options (refund, exchange, store credit), starts the return and confirms the next step. Final-sale and damaged items follow separate rules.

How Aftersales handles it: You write the return policy as a procedure: the window, excluded items, when to offer an exchange first and when store credit is allowed. Agent reads the order, applies the policy and takes the permitted action. Refunds to card go through Stripe within your caps. Anything outside policy, such as a return on day 45 of a 30-day window from a long-time customer, can be routed to a human with a recommendation.

Can I change my shipping address?

What good looks like: if the order is not yet fulfilled, the address changes and the customer gets confirmation. If it has shipped, the customer hears the real options, such as a carrier redirect or a return and reorder.

How Aftersales handles it: Agent checks fulfillment status in Shopify and performs the order action when allowed. Because it counts once per conversation, a customer who asks about tracking and then asks to change the address in the same thread costs one $0.99 resolution.

My item arrived damaged

What good looks like: the customer is asked for a photo if your policy requires it, a replacement or refund is issued quickly, and the issue is logged so the team can spot patterns by product or warehouse.

How Aftersales handles it: Agent follows the damaged-item procedure, requests evidence where required and issues a replacement or refund within guardrails. Insights groups these conversations and flags a spike, for example ten damaged-glass reports from one warehouse in a day, so operations can act before it becomes a hundred.

Cancel my order

What good looks like: fast cancellation before fulfillment, a clear answer after fulfillment, and an optional save offer if your policy includes one.

How Aftersales handles it: Agent checks status and, where your procedure allows, performs the order action. You can require a human for high-value orders or for customers with a history of disputes.

My discount code did not work

What good looks like: the AI explains why (expired, minimum spend, excluded items) and, if your policy allows, applies a goodwill fix such as a partial refund of the discount.

How Aftersales handles it: Agent reads the order and your promotion rules from Knowledge, explains the reason and, within guardrails, can issue a partial Stripe refund. If many customers report the same code, Insights flags it as an emerging issue so marketing can fix the code itself.

Pre-sale questions

Sizing, materials, shipping times and stock questions are simpler but high volume. Agent answers from your Knowledge in 31 languages. Tools with strong messengers such as Intercom and Tidio are also good at pre-sale chat; Gorgias offers shopping assistant features aimed at conversion.

What is the best helpdesk for Shopify stores?

For Shopify stores the helpdesk should verify orders, show fulfillment and tracking, and let AI take order actions without extra apps. Aftersales connects to Shopify for order verification, order actions and replacements, and to Stripe for refunds. Gorgias is the other strong Shopify-first helpdesk, with a long track record and a large app ecosystem.

What should a Shopify helpdesk integration include?

  • Automatic matching of conversations to Shopify customers and orders.
  • Order details, line items, fulfillment and tracking in the conversation.
  • Actions from the conversation: order edits, cancellations, replacements, refunds.
  • AI access to the same actions, with guardrails.
  • Tags and notes written back so the store team sees what happened.

Which ecommerce helpdesk works with WooCommerce, BigCommerce or Magento?

Aftersales publishes native Shopify actions and Stripe refunds. If your store runs on another platform, such as WooCommerce, BigCommerce or Magento, confirm the integration you need with us on a call before you decide. Several other tools on this list publish broader platform coverage: eDesk lists Shopify, BigCommerce, Magento and WooCommerce plus marketplaces, and Tidio is popular with WooCommerce stores.

You can still use Aftersales Inbox, Copilot, Insights and Knowledge on any platform, and Agent answers from your policies in 31 languages. The action-taking parts are strongest on Shopify and Stripe.

How do you implement an ecommerce helpdesk?

A good ecommerce helpdesk rollout takes two to six weeks: connect your store and channels, write procedures, import knowledge, test on real conversations, then expand AI coverage ticket type by ticket type. Here is the checklist we use with Aftersales customers. Most of it applies to any tool.

Week 1: connect and import

  1. Connect Shopify and, if you use it, Stripe.
  2. Connect email addresses, live chat, WhatsApp, SMS and social accounts.
  3. Import help center articles, macros and policy documents into Knowledge.
  4. Set up teams, roles and Lite seats for occasional users.
  5. Define business hours, SLAs and routing for human queues.

Week 2: write procedures and guardrails

  1. Write procedures for your top five ticket types in plain language, such as order status, late delivery, returns, address change and damaged items.
  2. Set spend guardrails: maximum refund per order, maximum replacements per customer, and actions that always need a person.
  3. Set escalation rules by sentiment, keywords, customer tier and legal language.
  4. Decide which languages to support and review translated replies.

Week 3: test on real conversations

  1. Run Agent on a slice of live traffic, such as chat only or one ticket type.
  2. Review every AI conversation for the first few days, then a daily sample.
  3. Fix gaps in knowledge and procedures as they appear.
  4. Track resolution rate, escalation rate, CSAT and reopen rate.

Week 4 and after: expand and optimize

  1. Add more channels and ticket types as the resolution rate stabilizes.
  2. Turn on Copilot for human agents to draft, summarize and translate.
  3. Use Insights to catch emerging issues and set quality monitors.
  4. Plan staffing for peak season using forecasts and your resolution rate.

How do you switch from Gorgias, Zendesk or Freshdesk?

  1. Keep your current helpdesk live while you set up the new one. On Zendesk, Salesforce Service Cloud or Freshdesk you can start with Aftersales Agent on its own, with no seats or migration.
  2. Export macros, tags and help center content and import them as Knowledge.
  3. Recreate routing and SLAs in the new Inbox, simplifying rules that only existed to work around the old tool.
  4. Move one channel at a time, usually chat first, then email, then social and phone.
  5. Run both tools in parallel for a week and compare resolution and response times.
  6. Cancel the old plan once all channels are live and your team is comfortable.

More detail in switching from Gorgias, switching from Zendesk and switching from Freshdesk.

How do you migrate macros and help center content to a new helpdesk?

Moving help center articles, macros, tags and routing is usually the bulk of a helpdesk migration. Treat it as a cleanup, not a copy.

  • Help center: export articles, remove outdated ones and import the rest into Knowledge. Rewrite policy articles so they state rules clearly, because the AI will follow them.
  • Macros: most stores have far more macros than they use. Keep the top ones by usage, and turn the policy logic inside them into procedures for Agent.
  • Tags: consolidate to a short list that matches your reporting, such as ticket type, product and outcome.
  • Routing and SLAs: rebuild only what you need. Many old rules existed to triage order status tickets that Agent now resolves.
  • Historic conversations: decide how much history you need in the new tool, and keep an export of the rest.

How do you write AI procedures for an ecommerce helpdesk?

Write AI procedures the way you would brief a new hire: the situation, the checks, the allowed actions, the limits and when to hand off. Aftersales Agent follows procedures in plain language, so you do not need a flow builder. Here are templates for the five most common ecommerce tickets.

Template: late order

When a customer asks where their order is, verify the order. If it has not shipped and is within the promised processing time, give the expected ship date. If it has shipped, share the latest tracking status in plain words. If tracking has not updated for 5 business days, apologize and offer a free replacement for orders under $100. For orders over $100 or customers who mention a chargeback, hand off to a human with a summary.

Template: return request

Check the order date. If it is within 30 days and the item is not marked final sale, offer an exchange first, then store credit, then a refund to the original payment method. Refund automatically only for orders under $150. For items marked damaged, ask for a photo before issuing a refund or replacement.

Template: address change

If the order is unfulfilled, update the shipping address and confirm it back to the customer. If it is fulfilled, explain that the parcel has left and offer a carrier redirect link if one exists; otherwise offer to reship after the return is received.

Template: cancellation

If the order is unfulfilled, cancel it and refund in full. If it is fulfilled, explain the returns process. For orders above $300, hand off to a human before cancelling.

Template: discount code problem

Check whether the code was valid at order time and whether the order met the conditions. If the code should have applied, refund the difference up to $20. If not, explain the reason politely. If more than five customers report the same code in a day, tag the conversations as a promotion issue.

Guardrails to set alongside procedures

  • Maximum refund per order and per customer per month.
  • Maximum replacements per customer.
  • Always hand off on legal language, strong negative sentiment or VIP tier.
  • Always hand off on orders above a value you choose.

How do you run a fair ecommerce helpdesk trial?

Run a two-week trial on real traffic with written success criteria. Here is a 14-day plan that fits the Aftersales free trial and works for any tool.

  1. Day 1: connect Shopify, Stripe, email and chat. Import your help center and macros.
  2. Day 2: write procedures for order status, returns and address changes. Set guardrails and escalation rules.
  3. Day 3: test with internal team members posing as customers, using real order numbers.
  4. Days 4 to 7: route chat traffic, or one ticket type, to the AI. Review every conversation.
  5. Day 8: fix knowledge gaps and tighten procedures based on escalations.
  6. Days 9 to 12: add email. Sample 20 AI conversations a day for quality.
  7. Day 13: calculate resolution rate, reopen rate, CSAT and cost per conversation.
  8. Day 14: compare with your current tool and model 12 months of cost, including peak.

What success criteria should you set?

  • A resolution rate target for the trial period, knowing the rate usually rises over 90 days.
  • No drop in CSAT on AI-handled conversations compared with human ones.
  • A reopen rate low enough that resolutions are real.
  • Zero refunds or replacements outside guardrails.
  • A modeled cost per conversation below your current one.

How should an ecommerce support team work with AI?

With AI resolving routine order tickets, the human team shifts from answering the same questions to handling exceptions, improving procedures and watching quality. Plan roles around that.

  • Support lead: owns procedures, guardrails and the resolution rate target.
  • Senior agents: handle escalations, high-value orders and upset customers, with Copilot drafting and summarizing.
  • Knowledge owner: keeps the help center and policies current, and reviews AI gaps weekly.
  • Quality reviewer: samples AI and human conversations and tunes quality monitors in Insights.
  • Operations partners: warehouse, finance and marketing staff on free Lite seats, who see issues flagged by Insights and act on them.

How many agents do you need with AI?

Estimate human volume as total conversations times one minus your resolution rate. A store with 5,000 conversations a month at 71% resolution leaves about 1,450 for people. At 8 conversations an hour and about 120 productive hours per agent per month, that is roughly 1.5 agents, before coverage for hours, channels and leave. Without AI, the same volume would need about 5.2 agents on the same assumptions.

How many agents does an online store need with an AI helpdesk?

This table shows how many human agents a store needs at different volumes, with and without AI resolution, and what Aftersales Growth costs at each level. It assumes 8 human-handled conversations per hour, 120 productive hours per agent per month and 71% AI resolution, our 90-day median.

20,00020.85,8006.0$14,0586 seats, $414

Illustrative model. Real staffing needs coverage for hours, channels, leave and peak days, so most teams keep more seats than the minimum.

The point is not to cut the team to the minimum. It is to see how much capacity AI frees for harder work, longer opening hours and peak season without new hires.

Which metrics show that an ecommerce helpdesk is working?

Track six metrics after you switch: resolution rate, cost per conversation, first response time, CSAT, reopen rate and escalation rate. Together they tell you whether the helpdesk and the AI are actually doing the work, not just moving it around.

MetricWhat it measuresHow to calculateWhat to watch for
Resolution rateShare of conversations solved without a humanAI-resolved conversations divided by all conversations AI handledRising steadily over the first 90 days; Aftersales median is 71% after 90 days
Cost per conversationTotal support cost divided by conversations(Seats + AI + add-ons + labor) divided by conversationsFalling as resolution rises; Northwind Outdoors cut it by 41%
First response timeHow fast customers hear backMedian time from first message to first replyNear-instant for AI; track human queues separately
CSATCustomer satisfactionShare of positive survey responsesCompare AI-resolved and human-resolved conversations
Reopen rateWhether problems stayed solvedConversations reopened within 7 days divided by resolvedA high reopen rate means false resolutions
Escalation rateHow often AI hands offEscalated conversations divided by AI-handledToo low may mean the AI is overconfident; too high means gaps in procedures

What is a good resolution rate for an online store?

It depends on your ticket mix and how many actions the AI can take. Stores where most tickets are order status, returns and address changes can reach high rates once order actions are connected. Stores with many complex, high-value or regulated requests will sit lower. The Aftersales median after 90 days is 71%. Use your own trial data rather than a vendor's headline number when you plan.

How should you report on AI and human work together?

Report one set of numbers for the whole inbox and then split by AI and human. Watch cost per conversation for the whole team, because it captures both the AI bill and the labor it replaces. Aftersales Insights reports across AI and human replies in one place and runs quality monitors on both.

How do you prepare an ecommerce helpdesk for peak season?

Plan for peak season by forecasting volume, fixing your top ticket types before the rush and choosing pricing that does not jump when volume doubles. Outcome-based AI pricing is the easiest to budget, because extra resolved conversations cost a known amount and the seat count stays flat.

Eight weeks before peak

  • Pull last year's peak volumes by day and by ticket type.
  • Review AI procedures for order status, late delivery and returns, which spike most.
  • Update shipping cutoffs, holiday return windows and promotion rules in Knowledge.
  • Confirm your plan limits: ticket tiers, session packs, conversation caps and overage prices.

Four weeks before peak

  • Load test AI on the busiest channel, usually chat or email.
  • Set escalation rules for VIP tiers and high-value orders.
  • Add Lite seats for warehouse and operations staff who need to see or comment on conversations.
  • Prepare proactive messages for delays, if you use Proactive.

During peak

  • Watch Insights daily for emerging issues, such as a carrier delay or a broken code.
  • Review a sample of AI conversations each day.
  • Move human agents to the conversations AI escalates, not to the queue in order.

After peak

  • Compare resolution rate, CSAT and cost per conversation with a normal month.
  • Update procedures based on what the AI could not handle.
  • Check returns volume, which usually rises in the weeks after peak.

What does peak season cost on each pricing model?

Take the mid-size store from our cost table and double its volume to 5,000 conversations for one month, with 60% AI resolution (3,000). On Aftersales Growth, cost moves from $1,830 to $3,315: 5 seats ($345) plus 3,000 resolutions ($2,970). On Gorgias, the store moves from Pro to Advanced ($750 for 5,000 tickets) plus 3,000 AI interactions ($2,700), about $3,450. On Zendesk Suite Professional with pay-as-you-go AI, it moves from $3,475 to about $6,475. On per-seat tools without AI, you would need temporary agents instead.

What does a peak day look like in an AI ecommerce helpdesk?

On the busiest day of the year, an AI helpdesk should resolve the flood of order status and change requests on its own, flag new problems within hours and route the hard cases to people with context. Here is how a peak day plays out in Aftersales, step by step, for a store that normally gets 150 conversations a day and gets 600 on the day.

  1. Morning: pre-sale questions about shipping cutoffs and discount codes arrive on chat. Agent answers from Knowledge, in the customer's language, and flags an unusual number of reports about one code.
  2. Insights alert: the code issue is grouped as an emerging issue. Marketing fixes the code. Agent applies your goodwill procedure to customers who were affected, within guardrails.
  3. Midday: address change and cancellation requests rise as customers realize mistakes. Agent checks fulfillment in Shopify and makes changes on unfulfilled orders.
  4. Afternoon: a VIP customer sends an angry message about a gift that will not arrive in time. The escalation rule for tier and sentiment sends it to a senior agent, with a summary and the order already open. Copilot drafts a reply.
  5. Evening: WISMO questions for earlier orders keep arriving on email and WhatsApp. Agent resolves them with live tracking data while the team is offline.
  6. Next morning: the lead reviews resolution rate, escalations and quality monitor results, and updates one procedure that caused unnecessary handoffs.

The cost side is predictable: each resolved conversation is $0.99, conversations Agent can't help with are free, and the seat count does not change for the day.

What mistakes do stores make when choosing a helpdesk?

The most common mistakes are buying on feature count, measuring deflection instead of resolution, ignoring peak-season pricing and letting AI loose without guardrails. Each one is easy to avoid.

  1. Buying on feature count. A long feature list does not mean the tool finishes your top ticket types. Test on your own conversations.
  2. Measuring deflection. Deflection includes customers who gave up. Measure resolution and reopen rate.
  3. Ignoring how AI is billed. Per-session and per-conversation AI charges even when the customer still needs a human. Per-interaction AI can also count as a ticket.
  4. Forgetting peak season. Model your busiest month, not your average one.
  5. No guardrails on refunds. Set caps per order and per customer, and escalation rules for legal language and high-value orders.
  6. Out-of-date knowledge. AI is only as good as your policies and help center. Assign an owner.
  7. Paying full seats for occasional users. Use free Lite seats (20 on Aftersales Growth, 50 on Scale) for staff who only check a few conversations.
  8. Migrating everything at once. Move channel by channel, or start with Agent on its own inside your current helpdesk.
  9. Not reviewing AI conversations. Review daily at first, then sample weekly, and use quality monitors.
  10. Skipping security review. Check SOC 2 Type II, GDPR terms and, where relevant, SSO and data residency before customer data moves.

How secure are ecommerce helpdesks?

Check four things: independent security audits such as SOC 2 Type II, GDPR terms, access controls such as SSO and SCIM, and where your data is stored. Aftersales is SOC 2 Type II and GDPR compliant, HIPAA-ready with a BAA on Scale, and offers SSO, SAML, SCIM and data residency on Scale.

Ecommerce helpdesks hold names, addresses, order histories and sometimes photos of damaged items or IDs for high-value returns. Ask every vendor for its latest audit report, subprocessor list and data retention settings. If AI can issue refunds, ask how actions are logged and who can change guardrails. For health and wellness brands, check whether the vendor will sign a BAA; Aftersales does on Scale. See healthcare and fintech for regulated use cases.

Four changes define ecommerce helpdesks in 2026: AI that takes actions instead of answering FAQs, outcome-based pricing, AI that runs inside existing helpdesks, and real-time issue detection across all conversations. Each one changes what you should look for.

1. From answers to actions

Early support bots answered policy questions. The current generation verifies orders and completes the task: a replacement, an address change, a refund. That shift is why resolution rates have become a realistic buying metric.

2. From seats to outcomes

Vendors increasingly bill AI per resolution or outcome. Aftersales, Intercom and eDesk all charge $0.99; Help Scout charges $0.75; Zendesk bills per automated resolution beyond an allowance. Others still bill per interaction, session or conversation. Outcome pricing is easier to justify to finance because every dollar maps to a solved problem.

3. AI without migration

Large teams do not want to replace their helpdesk to get better AI. Products such as Aftersales Agent on its own run inside Zendesk, Salesforce Service Cloud or Freshdesk.

4. Insights across every conversation

When AI reads every conversation, it can also spot patterns: a product defect, a carrier delay, a confusing checkout step. Aftersales Insights turns support conversations into early warnings for operations and product teams.

What do ecommerce helpdesk pricing terms mean?

These are the terms you will see on vendor pricing pages and in demos.

  • Resolution: a conversation the AI solved without a human. Aftersales counts one per conversation.
  • Outcome: Intercom's and eDesk's term for a similar billable unit.
  • Automated interaction: Gorgias's billable AI unit, which also counts as a ticket.
  • Session: Freshdesk's AI unit, a 72-hour window from the customer's first message.
  • Deflection: a conversation that did not reach a human, whether or not it was solved.
  • Seat: a paid user license. Lite seat: a free, limited license for occasional users.
  • Ticket tier: a plan priced by monthly ticket volume rather than users.
  • Overage: the per-unit price above a plan's allowance.
  • WISMO: where is my order, the most common ecommerce ticket.
  • Procedure: a plain-language instruction the AI follows for a ticket type.
  • Guardrail: a limit on what the AI may do, such as a refund cap.
  • Escalation rule: a condition that sends a conversation to a person.
  • Copilot: AI that helps human agents draft, summarize and translate.
  • CSAT: customer satisfaction score from post-conversation surveys.

Frequently asked questions

What is an ecommerce helpdesk?
An ecommerce helpdesk is customer service software that pulls order, shipping and customer data into each conversation so agents and AI can answer and act without switching tabs. Most add store integrations such as Shopify on top of a shared inbox.
What is the best helpdesk for Shopify?
Aftersales and Gorgias are the strongest Shopify-focused options. Aftersales leads on AI that verifies orders and takes actions, while Gorgias has the longest track record and largest app ecosystem among Shopify helpdesks.
How much does an ecommerce helpdesk cost?
Entry plans range from free (Help Scout, Aftersales Free) to around $20 to $60 per seat per month, with AI billed separately per resolution, conversation or session. Gorgias prices by ticket volume instead of seats, from $10 a month for 50 tickets.
Is per-resolution or per-conversation AI pricing cheaper?
It depends on your resolution rate. Per-conversation pricing charges even when the AI fails, while per-resolution pricing only charges when the AI resolves. Aftersales counts a resolution once per conversation, and conversations Agent can't help with are free.
Can I add AI without switching helpdesk?
Yes. Aftersales Agent runs inside Zendesk, Salesforce Service Cloud or Freshdesk, and tools such as Siena and Yuma run on top of helpdesks like Gorgias and Zendesk.
Which ecommerce helpdesk is best for small teams?
Small teams often start with Aftersales Free, Help Scout's free plan or Re:amaze's flat $59 Starter plan. Pick based on whether you need AI resolution now or just a shared inbox.
What is the cheapest ecommerce helpdesk?
On raw monthly cost, free plans from Aftersales, Help Scout and Tidio are the cheapest way to start. Once AI handles meaningful volume, compare cost per resolved conversation: Aftersales charges $0.99 per resolution and nothing for conversations Agent can't help with, with seats from $24.
How much does Aftersales cost?
Aftersales has a Free plan, then Starter $24, Growth $69 and Scale $109 per seat per month billed annually, or 20% more monthly. Agent costs $0.99 per resolution on every plan, counted once per conversation. Copilot is $29 per rep per month annual, and Proactive and Insights Pro are $99 a month each.
Is Aftersales cheaper than Gorgias?
For most teams using AI at scale, yes, because Gorgias bills $0.90 per AI interaction and each interaction also counts as a ticket. In our mid-size example the two tie at about $1,830 a month, and Aftersales pulls ahead as volume grows. Very small teams with many occasional users may find Gorgias's low tiers and unlimited users cheaper.
Is Aftersales cheaper than Zendesk?
In our examples, yes. Zendesk Suite Professional is $115 per agent per month annual and extra automated resolutions are US$2.00 each on pay as you go, against $69 per seat and $0.99 per resolution on Aftersales Growth. You can also keep Zendesk and run Aftersales Agent inside it.
Which ecommerce helpdesk has the best AI?
Look for AI that takes actions and is billed on resolution. Aftersales Agent verifies Shopify orders, takes order actions and replacements and issues Stripe refunds within guardrails, with a median 71% resolution rate after 90 days. Intercom Fin is also strong and priced per outcome.
Can AI handle returns for my store?
Yes, if the AI can read the order and your return policy and take the action. Aftersales Agent applies returns procedures written in plain language and can issue refunds through Stripe within spend guardrails, handing exceptions to a person.
What is WISMO and why does it matter for helpdesks?
WISMO stands for where is my order. It is usually the largest ticket category for online stores, so a helpdesk that resolves it automatically with live order and tracking data removes a big share of work.
Which ecommerce helpdesk is best for Amazon sellers?
eDesk is built for marketplace sellers and supports Amazon, eBay, Walmart and Mirakl natively. If most of your volume comes from your own store, Aftersales is a stronger choice for AI resolution.
Does Aftersales support WhatsApp and phone?
Yes. Aftersales supports email, live chat, WhatsApp, SMS and social on all paid plans, and phone with transfers and recording on Growth and Scale.
How many languages does Aftersales support?
Aftersales Agent supports 31 languages, and Copilot translates replies for human agents.
Is there a free trial?
Aftersales has a 14-day free trial on paid plans and a Free plan with one seat and the first 50 Agent resolutions free. Most competitors also offer trials; check whether AI usage is included.
How long does it take to switch helpdesks?
Most stores switch in two to six weeks: connect channels and the store, import knowledge, write procedures, test on real traffic and move channels one at a time. Starting with Aftersales Agent inside your current helpdesk avoids a migration entirely.
What is a Lite seat?
A Lite seat is a free seat for occasional users, such as warehouse or finance staff, who need to see or help with conversations without a full license. Aftersales includes 20 on Growth and 50 on Scale.
Is Aftersales secure enough for larger brands?
Aftersales is SOC 2 Type II and GDPR compliant and HIPAA-ready with a BAA on Scale. Scale also adds SSO, SAML, SCIM and data residency.
Do ecommerce helpdesks charge for AI conversations that fail?
Some do. Per-session and per-conversation models, such as Freshdesk sessions and Richpanel AI conversations, charge whether or not the AI resolves. Aftersales charges only for resolutions, and conversations Agent can't help with are free.
Can I use Aftersales with Gorgias?
Aftersales Agent on its own runs inside Zendesk, Salesforce Service Cloud or Freshdesk. Gorgias users typically move to Aftersales Inbox; you can move one channel at a time to reduce risk.
What is the best ecommerce helpdesk for international stores?
Look for multilingual AI and translation for human agents. Aftersales Agent supports 31 languages, Copilot translates both ways, and Scale adds data residency.
How do I measure if my ecommerce helpdesk is working?
Track resolution rate, cost per conversation, first response time, CSAT, reopen rate and escalation rate, split by AI and human. A rising resolution rate with stable CSAT and a low reopen rate is the clearest sign.
