What should a startup look for in customer support software?
A startup needs support software that costs little while the founder answers every message, and that does not force a rebuild when the first support hire arrives. In practice that means four things: a free tier or startup discount you can actually use, a price model that does not punish growth, AI that handles repeat questions before you hire, and a clean path from one shared inbox to queues, SLAs and reporting.
Most startups move through three stages:
- Founder-led support (0 to 1 people). Founders or engineers answer in a shared inbox or in Slack between other work. The goal is speed and learning what customers ask, not process.
- First support hire (2 to 3 people). Volume outgrows the founders. You need assignment, saved replies, a help center and a way for engineers to stay in the loop without living in the queue.
- A real team (4 to 10 people). Routing, SLAs, quality review, cost per conversation and AI resolution rate start to matter, and the tool you picked at stage one either scales or gets replaced.
Two traps catch startups. The first is a deep startup discount that ends just as you depend on the product, so always price year two and three. The second is per-seat pricing where every engineer who occasionally replies needs a paid seat. Check whether the tool has free view-and-comment seats and whether its AI is billed per seat, per resolution or in credits.
How do the best customer support tools for startups compare?
The table compares free tiers, startup programs and entry prices. Prices are list prices billed annually unless noted. Startup programs have eligibility rules, so treat them as a bonus, not the base price.

How did we compare these tools?
We checked every tool's own pricing, product and startup-program pages in October 2026 and scored them on what matters to a company with fewer than 15 people in support or none at all:
- Cost to start. Free tiers, trial length and startup programs, including eligibility.
- Cost to grow. What year two and three look like after discounts end, and how AI is billed.
- Founder-led fit. How fast one person can set it up, and whether engineers can join a thread without a paid seat.
- Room to scale. Routing, SLAs, reporting, workflows and security reviews you will face when you sell to larger customers.
- AI that does work. Whether the AI only answers from docs or can also take actions such as refunds and order lookups.
We build Aftersales, so we put it first. We say plainly where another tool is the better choice, and we only state prices we could verify on the vendor's own site.
The 10 best customer support software tools for startups
1. Aftersales: best for startups that want AI to carry support from founder-led to first team
Aftersales puts email, web and in-app chat, WhatsApp, SMS, social DMs and Slack Connect into one Inbox, with Agent answering first. Agent resolves conversations end to end in 31 languages and can take actions through connectors: it looks up and verifies Shopify orders, creates replacements and issues Stripe refunds within spend limits you set. When it hands off, the person sees the conversation, the data Agent looked up and what it already tried.
For a startup the pricing model is the point. The Free plan gives one founder a live chat and email inbox, a public help center and the first 50 Agent resolutions at no cost. After that Agent costs $0.99 per resolution, counted once per conversation, and conversations it can't help with are free. Agent never needs a seat, so volume can grow before headcount does. When you hire, Starter is $24 per seat and Growth $69 per seat billed annually, and Growth includes 20 free Lite seats, so engineers and founders can view, comment and approve without paying. Side conversations go into Slack, and a workflow can create a Jira issue when a bug report comes in.
Where it is weaker: Aftersales has no startup discount program, so a VC-backed company that qualifies for Intercom Early Stage or Zendesk for Startups will pay less in year one with those. The Free plan is one seat, while Help Scout is free for five. And a B2B startup that supports every customer in a dedicated Slack channel may find Pylon or Plain more purpose-built for that way of working.
- Best for
- Startups that want an AI agent to absorb repeat questions so the founder, then the first hire, only handle what needs a person
- Pricing
- Free $0 (1 seat, live chat + email inbox, first 50 Agent resolutions free, help center). Starter $24, Growth $69, Scale $109 per seat/month billed annually (20% more monthly). Agent $0.99 per resolution. 14-day free trial. See pricing.
- Strengths
- Agent takes actions with guardrails and no seat; free Lite seats on Growth; Copilot drafts replies that cite their sources; Insights flags emerging issues; a GDPR DPA and US hosting for your first security reviews.
- Watch out for
- No startup discount. Free plan is one seat. Workflows, round-robin and phone start on Growth; SSO and SCIM on Scale. Other systems connect through the Aftersales API or webhooks, so confirm specific connectors on a call.
2. Intercom: best startup program for VC-backed product companies
Intercom combines a Messenger for your site and app, a shared inbox, ticketing, a help center and the Fin AI agent. Its Early Stage program is the deepest discount in this list: 93% off in year one, 50% in year two and 25% in year three, for companies that have raised up to $10M, have fewer than 15 employees and are new to Intercom. The year-one package starts from $33 a month and includes 2 Advanced seats, 2 Copilot seats, 20 Lite seats, Proactive Support Plus and 300 Fin outcomes a month.
If you qualify, Intercom is likely cheaper than Aftersales in year one. Price the later years before you commit: the included Fin outcomes fall to 150 a month in year two and 75 in year three, extra outcomes cost $0.99, and list prices are $29, $85 and $132 per seat. Phone, SMS and WhatsApp are charged at list price throughout. See our Intercom pricing breakdown.
- Best for
- Funded startups under $10M raised and 15 people that want a polished in-app Messenger
- Pricing
- Essential $29, Advanced $85, Expert $132 per seat/month billed annually; Fin $0.99 per outcome. Early Stage: from $33/month in year 1, then 50% and 25% off.
- Strengths
- Strong Messenger and in-app experience; generous year-one Fin allowance; large integration ecosystem.
- Watch out for
- The discount steps down each year. Advanced costs nearly three times Essential per seat. Phone, SMS and WhatsApp are not discounted.
3. Zendesk: best free runway for startups that expect a large support team
Zendesk for Startups gives eligible companies 6 months free of Suite Professional and Copilot, with up to 2 years available through Zendesk's VC and accelerator partners. You need outside funding no later than Series B, a company under 10 years old, and 50 or fewer employees unless a partner refers you (then up to 249). After the free period you move to a paid plan.
Zendesk makes sense if you are confident support will become a large, multi-team operation and you want to start on the platform you will run at scale. For a founder answering 20 tickets a day it is more configuration than you need. If you start elsewhere and land on Zendesk later, Aftersales Agent can run inside Zendesk with no seats and no migration. See Zendesk pricing.
- Best for
- Funded startups up to Series B that want enterprise-grade ticketing from day one
- Pricing
- Support Team $19/agent/month annual. Suite Team $55, Suite Professional $115. Startup program: 6 months free of Suite Professional and Copilot, longer via partners.
- Strengths
- Mature ticketing, reporting and marketplace; long free runway through partners.
- Watch out for
- The free period ends and Suite Professional list price is high for a small team. AI beyond the per-agent allowance costs $2.00 per automated resolution pay-as-you-go.
4. HubSpot Service Hub: best if sales and marketing already run on HubSpot
HubSpot's free tools cover two users with ticketing and live chat tied to the same CRM records your sales team uses. Service Hub Starter is $7 per seat per month on annual billing. HubSpot for Startups takes up to 90% off year one, 50% in year two and 25% in year three for pre-seed to Series A companies affiliated with a partner or with verified funding, but it applies only to Professional and Enterprise products.
Pick it when one contact record across sales, marketing and support matters more than helpdesk depth. Note that the startup discount does not touch Starter, so a small team either stays on cheap Starter or commits to discounted Professional.
- Best for
- Startups whose go-to-market already runs on HubSpot CRM
- Pricing
- Free for up to 2 users. Starter $7/seat/month annual ($20 monthly). Professional $90/seat annual plus onboarding fee. Startup program: 90%/50%/25% off Professional or Enterprise over 3 years.
- Strengths
- One CRM for every team; cheap Starter seat; deep startup discount on higher tiers.
- Watch out for
- Startup pricing excludes Starter. Free chat carries HubSpot branding. AI is metered in credits.
5. Help Scout: best free tier for an email-first founding team
Help Scout is a shared inbox that feels like email, with a Docs knowledge base, live chat and AI Answers. Its free plan covers up to 5 users with one inbox and one Docs site, the most free seats among the per-seat tools here. Help Scout also says it offers a startup plan for early-stage companies; terms are not published, so ask.
It beats Aftersales when two to five founders share support, mostly over email, and want to pay nothing. AI Answers costs $0.75 per resolution, less than Aftersales Agent, though it is built to answer questions from your content rather than take actions in other systems.
- Best for
- Founding teams of up to 5 that answer mostly email
- Pricing
- Free for up to 5 users (1 inbox, 1 Docs site). Standard $25, Plus $45, Pro $75 per user/month; annual billing saves 16%. AI Answers $0.75 per resolution.
- Strengths
- Generous free seats; short learning curve; clear per-resolution AI price.
- Watch out for
- One inbox on the free plan. Advanced workflows and round-robin on Plus; SSO and HIPAA on Pro.
6. Plain: best for developer-tool and API startups
Plain is a B2B support platform built for technical products. It brings Slack, Discord, Microsoft Teams, email and in-app forms into one queue, with an AI agent (Ari) for customers and an internal agent (Sidekick) for the team. Foundation is $45 per user per month billed annually with a 3-seat minimum. Its startup program offers 50% off Horizon at $6,000 for 12 months and 10 seats, for VC-backed startups with up to $5M raised and a support team of 10 or fewer.
If your customers are developers who expect answers in Slack or Discord, Plain is closer to how they work than a consumer-style helpdesk. For a B2C startup with order and refund questions, Aftersales is the better fit.
- Best for
- B2B and developer-tool startups supporting customers in Slack, Discord and Teams
- Pricing
- Foundation $45/user/month annual ($55 monthly), 3-seat minimum; Horizon $99/user/month; Frontier custom. AI billed in monthly credits. Startup program: 50% off Horizon, $6,000/year for 10 seats.
- Strengths
- Built around community and chat channels developers use; API-first design.
- Watch out for
- 3-seat minimum rules out solo founders. Credit-based AI takes forecasting. Not aimed at consumer support.
7. Pylon: best for B2B startups running support in Slack Connect
Pylon describes itself as an agentic support platform for B2B companies. It takes in conversations from Slack, Microsoft Teams, email, chat, Discord and more, turns them into tickets, and adds account intelligence across your CRM, product usage and logs, with integrations to Salesforce, HubSpot, Linear and Jira.
A B2B startup that opens a shared Slack channel for every customer will find Pylon purpose-built for that model. It is priced per seat on annual plans with seat minimums, and it does not publish a startup program, so get a quote. For high-volume B2C support, a tool with consumer channels and order actions fits better.
- Best for
- B2B startups whose customers live in shared Slack or Teams channels
- Pricing
- Per seat, billed annually, with seat minimums; confirm current prices with Pylon.
- Strengths
- Slack-native ticketing; account context from CRM and product data; AI agents for triage and answers.
- Watch out for
- No free tier and no published startup discount. Overkill for consumer support.
8. Freshdesk: best low-cost classic ticketing
Freshdesk is a full ticketing system with a portal, knowledge base and reports from Growth at $19 per agent per month billed annually, with 500 Freddy AI Agent sessions included. Its Free Program gives up to two agents at no cost for six months. Freshworks also runs a startup program offering credits to pre-Series B companies; confirm the current amount with Freshworks.
It suits a startup that wants structured ticketing at a low per-agent price. If you later want an AI agent that takes actions, Aftersales Agent can run inside Freshdesk with no seats and no migration. See Freshdesk pricing.
- Best for
- Startups that want traditional ticketing cheaply
- Pricing
- Growth $19, Pro $55, Enterprise $89 per agent/month annual. Free Program: 2 agents for 6 months. Freddy AI Agent: 500 sessions included, then $49 per 100.
- Strengths
- Low entry price; mature ticketing; AI sessions included.
- Watch out for
- The free option ends after six months. Multilingual help desk and custom dashboards need Pro.
9. Crisp: best flat pricing for a chat-led startup
Crisp charges per workspace, not per seat. The free plan includes two seats with a chat widget and shared inbox; Mini at $45 a month covers four seats and adds email; Essentials at $95 covers ten seats and adds WhatsApp, Instagram, SMS, a knowledge base and workflows, with AI credits included from Mini.
For a startup that adds people quickly but has a tight budget, flat pricing is easy to forecast. Aftersales is the better pick when you need AI that resolves conversations by taking actions such as refunds.
- Best for
- Chat-first startups that want predictable flat pricing
- Pricing
- Free (2 seats). Mini $45, Essentials $95, Plus $295 per workspace/month; extra agents $10/seat.
- Strengths
- Up to 10 seats on Essentials for one price; omnichannel inbox; AI credits bundled.
- Watch out for
- Ticketing arrives on Plus. Included AI credits cover limited volume.
10. Chatwoot: best open-source option for technical teams
Chatwoot is an open-source customer support platform you can self-host or use in the cloud. The cloud Hacker plan is free for up to 2 agents and 500 conversations a month, live chat only. The paid plan named Startups is $19 per agent per month with all channels and 300 Captain AI credits; Business is $39. Chatwoot offers its Startups plan free to qualifying open-source projects.
Choose it if you want to own your data and infrastructure and have engineers to run it. Self-hosting shifts cost from licences to your own time.
- Best for
- Engineering-led startups that want open source or self-hosting
- Pricing
- Hacker free (2 agents, 500 conversations/month). Startups $19, Business $39, Enterprise $99 per agent/month. Extra AI credits $20 per 1,000.
- Strengths
- Open source; self-host option; low per-agent price.
- Watch out for
- Free cloud plan keeps 30 days of data and is chat only. Self-hosting needs engineering time.
Which startup programs are worth applying for?
Apply if you qualify, but pick the tool first and the discount second. Every program below ends or steps down, and switching helpdesks in year two costs more than the discount saved.
| Program | Who qualifies | What you get | What happens next |
|---|---|---|---|
| Intercom Early Stage | Up to $10M raised, under 15 employees, new to Intercom | 93% off year 1 from $33/month, 2 Advanced seats, 300 Fin outcomes/month | 50% off year 2, 25% off year 3; Fin allowance falls to 150 then 75 |
| Zendesk for Startups | Outside funding up to Series B, under 10 years old, 50 or fewer employees (up to 249 with partner referral) | 6 months free of Suite Professional and Copilot; up to 2 years via partners | Choose a paid plan |
| HubSpot for Startups | Pre-seed to Series A with partner affiliation or verified funding | Up to 90% off Professional or Enterprise in year 1 | 50% off year 2, 25% off year 3 |
| Plain startup program | VC-backed, up to $5M raised, support team of 10 or fewer | 50% off Horizon: $6,000 for 12 months, 10 seats | Pricing locked for 12 months |
| Chatwoot | Qualifying open-source projects | Startups plan free | Not stated |
Checked October 2026. Confirm current prices and program terms on each vendor's site.
Aftersales takes a different route: a Free plan with no eligibility rules and AI billed only when it resolves something. That will rarely beat a 93% discount in year one, but it is the same price in year three.
What does support software cost a startup in year one?
For a typical early-stage team the bill is a few hundred dollars a month, and AI resolutions usually cost more than seats. Example assumptions: 2 people answering, 600 conversations a month, and AI resolving half of them (300). List prices, billed annually, October 2026.
| Tool | Seats per month | AI per month | Approx. total per month |
|---|---|---|---|
| Aftersales Starter | 2 x $24 = $48 | 300 x $0.99 = $297 | $345 |
| Intercom Essential (list) | 2 x $29 = $58 | 300 x $0.99 = $297 | $355 |
| Intercom Early Stage, year 1 | Included (from $33) | 300 outcomes included | From $33, if eligible |
| Help Scout Standard | 2 x $25 x 0.84 = about $42 | 300 x $0.75 = $225 | About $267 |
Checked October 2026. Confirm current prices and program terms on each vendor's site.
Two honest readings. If you qualify for Intercom Early Stage, year one is far cheaper there. If you do not, Aftersales and Intercom land close together on this volume, Help Scout is cheaper if answer-only AI is enough, and Aftersales gains when Agent takes actions such as refunds or order changes that would otherwise need a person. Run your own numbers on our pricing page and see how teams raise their resolution rate over time.
