What is a customer support ticketing system?
A customer support ticketing system turns every customer email, chat, message or call into a ticket with an owner, a status and a deadline, so nothing gets lost and the team can see what is waiting. It sits between your customers and your support team: tickets arrive in shared queues, get routed to the right person, are answered with saved replies and are measured against SLAs.
Most modern tools now add AI on top. Some only suggest replies; others, like the Aftersales Agent, resolve the ticket themselves and take actions such as a refund. That AI layer is now the biggest difference between products, and the biggest variable in the bill.
This list covers external customer support. If you need an internal IT help desk for employees, read the section on ITSM tools first, because that is a different category.

How did we compare these ticketing systems?
We judged each tool as a customer-facing support team would, and checked plans and prices on each vendor's own pricing page in October 2026. Where a vendor does not publish a number in US dollars we describe the pricing model instead.
- Ticket basics: shared queues, assignment and routing, saved replies, internal notes, SLAs and views.
- Channels: whether chat, messaging and phone land in the same queue as email or in a separate tool.
- AI: does it only draft, or can it resolve a ticket and take an action, and how does it hand off to people?
- Automation and reporting: workflows, SLA tracking, CSAT and cost visibility.
- Pricing model: per seat, per ticket or per AI outcome, and what happens to the bill as volume grows.
- Fit: each entry has an honest "watch out for".
Aftersales is our product and we list it first. We say plainly where another tool is the better pick so you can judge the list on its merits.
The 9 best customer support ticketing systems
1. Aftersales: best for teams that want AI to close tickets, not just sort them
Aftersales combines a shared Inbox with an AI Agent that resolves conversations end to end. Email, web and in-app chat, WhatsApp, SMS, phone, social DMs and Slack Connect arrive in one queue with tickets, views, SLAs and side conversations into Slack, so you can ask engineering or finance without leaving the thread.
Agent reads intent, sentiment and language from the first message in 31 languages. You describe a procedure in plain language (or import an existing macro) and Agent turns it into steps that can verify orders in Shopify, create replacements or issue Stripe refunds within spend limits you set. Escalation rules fire on sentiment, keywords, customer tier or legal language, and the human who picks up gets the conversation, the data Agent looked up and what it already tried. Median resolution by Agent is 71% after 90 days.
Copilot drafts replies that cite their sources, and Insights tracks resolution rate, cost per conversation and CSAT for AI and humans, with Monitors scoring quality on every conversation. Already on Zendesk, Salesforce Service Cloud or Freshdesk? Agent can run inside them with no seats and no migration.
Where it is weaker: Aftersales was founded in 2024, so it has a smaller app marketplace than Zendesk or HubSpot. Other systems connect through the API or webhooks, so confirm niche connectors on a call. If you want the cheapest possible human-only ticketing for a large team, Zoho Desk or Zendesk Support Team cost less per seat.
- Best for
- Support teams that want one queue for every channel and an AI agent that resolves tickets and takes actions with guardrails
- Pricing
- Free plan (1 seat, live chat + email inbox, first 50 Agent resolutions free). Starter $24, Growth $69, Scale $109 per seat/month billed annually (monthly is 20% more). Agent $0.99 per resolution, counted once per conversation; conversations Agent can't help with are free. Lite seats free on Growth and Scale. See pricing.
- Strengths
- AI that takes actions in Shopify and Stripe; plain-language procedures; escalation rules and spend guardrails; Copilot with cited sources; quality Monitors on every conversation; GDPR DPA, US-hosted, HIPAA with a BAA on Enterprise.
- Watch out for
- Younger product with fewer native integrations; others connect through API or webhooks. Free plan is one seat. SSO, SAML and SCIM need Scale.
2. Zendesk: best for large teams that need the deepest ticketing and app ecosystem
Zendesk is the reference point for ticketing. Every plan includes email and ticketing, routing, triggers and automations, saved replies and prebuilt dashboards. Suite plans add messaging, voice and a help center, and its marketplace is the largest on this list, which matters if you run many connected tools.
It is the better pick than Aftersales if you have a big, multi-department support operation that needs mature admin controls and hundreds of integrations. The catch is cost as you add AI: plans include 5 or 10 automated resolutions per agent per month, and extra resolutions are $2.00 each pay-as-you-go. If you like Zendesk but want cheaper AI, Aftersales Agent can run inside it. See our Zendesk pricing breakdown.
- Best for
- Large or complex support teams that want a proven ticketing core and a big integration marketplace
- Pricing
- Support Team $19, Suite Team $55, Suite Professional $115 per agent/month billed annually ($25, $69, $149 monthly); Enterprise custom. Automated resolutions beyond the allowance $2.00 each pay-as-you-go. 14-day trial.
- Strengths
- Mature ticketing, triggers and SLAs; huge app marketplace; help center and voice on Suite.
- Watch out for
- AI costs add up beyond the included resolutions; many features sit on higher Suite tiers. Compare Zendesk alternatives.
3. Freshdesk: best value for growing teams that want classic ticketing
Freshdesk from Freshworks covers the classic ticketing toolkit: shared inbox, ticket assignment, canned responses, SLA policies, automations and a customer portal, with phone and chat available. It is usually cheaper per seat than Zendesk at similar tiers.
Its Freddy AI Agent comes with 500 sessions included on every plan, then $49 per 100 sessions, and Freddy Copilot is a $29 per agent add-on on Pro and Enterprise. For a mid-size team that mainly wants solid human ticketing at a fair price, it is a strong choice. Aftersales Agent can also run inside Freshdesk if you want to keep it and add action-taking AI.
- Best for
- Small and mid-size teams that want full-featured ticketing at a lower per-seat price
- Pricing
- Growth $19, Pro $55, Enterprise $89 per agent/month billed annually. Freddy AI Agent: first 500 sessions included, then $49 per 100 sessions. Copilot $29/agent/month on Pro and Enterprise. 14-day trial. More in our Freshdesk pricing guide.
- Strengths
- Good price-to-feature ratio, SLA policies, portal, day passes for occasional agents.
- Watch out for
- AI is billed by session, which is a different unit from resolutions, so model it on your volume. See Freshdesk alternatives.
4. Help Scout: best for email-first teams that want a simple, human-feeling inbox
Help Scout keeps ticketing feeling like email: customers never see ticket numbers, and the team works from shared inboxes with saved replies, notes, collision detection and a Docs knowledge base. Chat, SMS, WhatsApp, Instagram and Messenger are included on paid plans.
For a small team that values simplicity over configuration, Help Scout is often a better fit than Aftersales. Its AI Answers costs $0.75 per resolution, slightly less than Aftersales Agent, though it focuses on answering from your content rather than taking actions in other systems.
- Best for
- Email-first small and mid-size teams that want an easy, friendly inbox
- Pricing
- Free for up to 5 users (1 inbox, 1 Docs site). Standard $25, Plus $45, Pro $75 per user/month billed annually. AI Answers $0.75 per resolution with a spending cap.
- Strengths
- Very easy to learn; generous free plan; affordable AI answers; HIPAA support on Pro.
- Watch out for
- Lighter routing and reporting than Zendesk; AI answers rather than acts. See Help Scout alternatives.
5. Zoho Desk: best low-cost ticketing for teams already on Zoho
Zoho Desk is a full ticketing system with a free plan for 3 users and paid tiers named Express, Standard, Professional and Enterprise. Higher tiers add Zia, Zoho's AI, plus live chat and guided conversations on Enterprise. It fits naturally if your company already runs Zoho CRM and other Zoho apps.
On price per seat it is one of the cheapest serious options, which makes it a better choice than Aftersales for budget-led teams that mostly need human ticketing. Zoho localizes prices by currency, so check the price in your own currency on its site.
- Best for
- Cost-conscious teams and companies already using the Zoho suite
- Pricing
- Free for 3 users. Express, Standard, Professional and Enterprise are priced per user per month, billed annually, and localized by currency.
- Strengths
- Low per-seat cost; deep Zoho integration; Zia AI on higher tiers.
- Watch out for
- Live chat sits on Enterprise; the admin interface takes time to learn. See Zoho Desk alternatives.
6. HubSpot Service Hub: best when support must live inside your CRM
Service Hub puts tickets on the same contact and company records your sales and marketing teams use, which is its main advantage. All paid tiers include ticketing across chat, email, forms and calling, and the AI Customer Agent is paid for with HubSpot Credits that come with each plan.
If your company already runs on HubSpot CRM, Service Hub is often the more sensible pick than a separate helpdesk. Watch the total: Professional and Enterprise carry one-time onboarding fees.
- Best for
- Companies standardised on HubSpot CRM that want tickets tied to deals and contacts
- Pricing
- Free for up to 2 users. Starter $20 per seat/month billed monthly (less with an annual commitment). Professional $90 per seat/month annually plus $1,500 onboarding; Enterprise $150 per seat/month plus $3,500 onboarding. AI uses HubSpot Credits; extra credits $0.010 each.
- Strengths
- One CRM for sales, marketing and support; customer portal; credit-based AI agent.
- Watch out for
- Onboarding fees and seat prices jump sharply from Starter to Professional. See HubSpot Service Hub alternatives.
7. Intercom: best for SaaS products that support users in-app
Intercom combines a messenger, a shared inbox and ticketing with Fin, its AI agent. It is strongest for software companies that talk to users inside their product, with banners, tooltips and in-app chat included on all plans.
Fin is priced at $0.99 per outcome, the same headline rate as Aftersales Agent. For in-app product support with onboarding messages, Intercom is the more complete tool. SMS, WhatsApp and phone are billed on usage. Read our Intercom pricing guide.
- Best for
- SaaS and app companies that support users inside the product
- Pricing
- Essential $29, Advanced $85, Expert $132 per seat/month billed annually. Fin AI Agent $0.99 per outcome, charged once per conversation. 14-day trial.
- Strengths
- Strong in-app messenger, product tours and banners; mature AI agent.
- Watch out for
- Seat plus usage pricing gets complex; email-heavy teams may find it chat-centric. See Intercom alternatives.
8. Front: best for teams that run support out of shared email
Front looks like an email client but works as a shared inbox with assignment, ticket statuses, SLAs and analytics. It suits operations and account teams who handle customer email alongside other work, not only dedicated support agents.
Its AI is modular: Autopilot starts at $0.05 per conversation, and Copilot, Smart QA and Smart CSAT are per-seat add-ons included on Enterprise. If your team lives in email and collaborates heavily on threads, Front can be a better fit than a classic ticketing tool.
- Best for
- Email-heavy operations and account teams who share customer threads
- Pricing
- Starter $25 per seat/month (up to 10 seats), Professional $65 (up to 50 seats), Enterprise $105, billed annually. Autopilot from $0.05 per conversation; Copilot $20 per seat/month add-on.
- Strengths
- Familiar email feel; strong collaboration on threads; flexible AI add-ons.
- Watch out for
- Seat caps on lower plans; AI is assembled from add-ons. See Front alternatives.
9. Gorgias: best for Shopify stores that prefer pricing by ticket volume
Gorgias is a helpdesk built for ecommerce. Tickets show order data from your store, agents can act on orders from the sidebar, and plans are priced by monthly ticket volume rather than by seat, so adding agents does not raise the bill.
For a small Shopify store with low volume and several part-time agents, ticket-based pricing can be cheaper than per-seat tools. Its AI Agent costs $0.90 per interaction on annual contracts, and each interaction also counts as a ticket. Compare the two in our Gorgias alternative page.
- Best for
- Ecommerce brands on Shopify with many agents and modest ticket volume
- Pricing
- Starter $10/month (50 tickets, monthly only); Basic $50 (300 tickets), Pro $300 (2,000 tickets), Advanced $750 (5,000 tickets) per month billed annually. Extra tickets $0.36 to $0.40. AI Agent $0.90 per interaction annual ($1.00 monthly).
- Strengths
- Built for ecommerce; unlimited seats; order actions inside tickets.
- Watch out for
- Costs rise with ticket volume, and AI interactions count as tickets. Narrow fit outside ecommerce. See Gorgias pricing.
Is an ITSM tool the same as a customer support ticketing system?
No. ITSM (IT service management) tools such as Jira Service Management, ServiceNow and Freshservice are built for internal IT and employee requests: incidents, problems, changes, asset management and approval flows aligned with frameworks like ITIL. Customer support ticketing systems are built for external customers: many channels, high volume, fast first replies, CSAT and, increasingly, AI that resolves routine questions.
You can run customer support on an ITSM tool, and some B2B teams do when support and engineering share one Jira workflow. But you usually give up customer-facing channels such as WhatsApp and social, consumer-friendly reply experiences and support-specific reporting. If your requests come from employees, shortlist ITSM tools. If they come from customers, use one of the tools above, and connect engineering through an integration; Aftersales Workflows can create a Jira issue from a ticket.
How much does a ticketing system cost for a 5-agent team?
The seat price is only half the bill; AI decides the rest. Example for a 5-agent team handling 1,000 conversations a month, assuming AI fully resolves 500 of them, using list prices billed annually:
- Aftersales Growth: 5 x $69 = $345 in seats + 500 x $0.99 = $495 in Agent resolutions, about $840/month.
- Zendesk Suite Team: 5 x $55 = $275 in seats; 25 resolutions included, 475 extra x $2.00 = $950 pay-as-you-go, about $1,225/month.
- Intercom Essential: 5 x $29 = $145 in seats + 500 x $0.99 = $495 for Fin, about $640/month.
- Help Scout Plus: 5 x $45 = $225 in seats + 500 x $0.75 = $375 for AI Answers, about $600/month.
- Freshdesk Pro: 5 x $55 = $275 in seats; 500 Freddy AI sessions included. Sessions are not the same unit as resolutions, so check how your volume counts.
On these assumptions Aftersales is not the cheapest; Help Scout and Intercom cost less. What you pay for with Aftersales is an agent that takes actions (refunds, replacements, order checks) and no charge when it can't help. Measure your own rate with our resolution rate guide.
